Chewacla State Park / Auburn, Alabama - Exploring a Few of the Bike Trails
Chewacla State Park in Auburn, AL, has dozens of mountain bike trails (which also double as hiking trails) from beginner level to expert. We went down a couple of the beginners and looked at a couple of intermediates. C.A.M.P. (Central Alabama Mountain Pedalers) is responsible for building and maintaining a large portion of the trails, particularly the ones with ramps, jumps, obstacles, and other exciting, added features. We are lucky enough to live down the road from Chewacla, so we can ride our bikes from our house and down the Charlotte and Curtis Ward Bike Path, alongside Shell Toomer Parkway, to the entrance. Take your kids for a fun, challenging time!

[EDIT] Chewacla State Park, Auburn AL
We rode a whole lot more than just the dirt jumps, but unfortunately the camera was not rolling. Lots of rain the previous day and high heat meant that filming anything worthwhile was out of the question.
Chewacla State Park is a nice riding center just outside Auburn Alabama. It features camping, both tent and RV, some cabins, a small lake, and plenty of riding. Your $4 entrance fee grants you access to the most high risk riding in the state - strangely enough we didn't have to sign any waivers to ride. There are two distinct trail systems, the older singletrack cut near the entrance, and the newer flow trails around the eastern half of the park. Overall, the trails were very well constructed with a lot of features you'd be hard pressed to find within a few hours driving, save Santos. One of the newest features (shown in the thumbnail) is a huge road gap, the biggest that I've ever personally seen. These trails are stirring up the pot for legal requirements, as many injuries - one of them fatal - have happened on park property. While the Forbidden Zone, which lays off of the trail Tiger Woods, is surely at risk of being investigated, I imagine that the rest of the trails pose no issue. We rode almost all of what Chewalca has to offer and encountered no mandatory features - even the Forbidden Zone has ridearounds for all but the smallest tabletops. Everything is rollable if you chose the bail trail, but those riders cocky enough can easily hurt themselves if their skills aren't up to par.
Not everything is huge black diamond jumplines however, the trails we rode had a lot of well crafted rock features to spice up the riding for those looking for a small challenge on the otherwise tame XC style loops. The loops are short and not overly steep, so sessioning sections is a breeze. Beginners to the advanced will find that there are varying levels of optional features to test their skills against. One of my favorite sections is the progressive drops near the lake. Ranging from an easily rollable 3-5 drop to a mini stepdown, it allows those uncomfortable with drops to easily progress their skills without the risk of getting hurt deep in the woods.
Overall, the park was excellent. I was really surprised at what the trails have to offer and would love to come back again. We spent probably 2 hours just at the dirt jumps and word is that there's a pro level BMX course coming soon. Although the $4 entrance fee is a bummer compared to free options in other parts of the country, the legislature situation in Alabama means that those who use the park must pay for it, else it run into disrepair. For a full experience, I recommend staying at the park with a few friends over a weekend in the Fall or Spring to provide easy access to trails and make the entrance fees a little more bearable.

spy plane - cell phone
I mounted my cell phone to the bottom of my 6 oz RC plane with a bracket made of music wire. the phone is oriented horizontally and has a small mirror angled at 45 deg in front of the lens to let the camera shoot forward.
The black bar through the shot is the landing gear, which broke on landing in the clumpy grass.
