Why should I visit Kiev? This travel guide will show you why Kiev is fast becoming a popular travel destination. We will should you some of the top things to do in Kiev, Ukraine.

Our Ukraine Travel Series started in Kiev (Київ) the Capital of Ukraine. We had 10 days to see as much of country as we could. We spent the first few days exploring and eating our way around Keiv, including a haunting but memorable day trip to Chernobyl and the ghost town of Pripyat. You can watch this as a separate video.
Moving on south west of the country we took an overnight train to Ivano-Frankivsk before taking a hire car up into the Carpathian Mountains. Bad weather in the mountains restricted what we could achieve, before driving north to Lviv. Our final day was spend flying back to Kiev to catch our flight home to the UK.

Kyiv Ukraine: I love this city! | Vareniki & Pierogi @ Puzata Hata | Crimean Food @ Musafir | Kiev

Traveling with my fun momma, we arrived to Kiev (Kyiv) Ukraine on the same day as Imagine Dragons were having a concert at the sports arena.

Budget hotels were so full, so we spent the night at the more pricey Park Inn Hotel. We had a great stay, and enjoyed the comfy beds and the great city views.

The next day we we checked out and moved to an awesome large 1 bedroom apartment in the center of Kiev.

We walked the main shopping street of Khreshchatyk, with tons of food and shopping.

Then off a side street we were lucky enough to find the Musafir restaurant, famous for homemade Crimean food. The staff were incredible, and the food was great value. Most plates were around $3 usd.

We also appreciated the kind Park Inn Reception who recommended to try the locals favorite cafeteria food spot called Puzata Hata. We ate vareniki, pierogi, blintzes, dill soup, lentil and soup. Two if us got full for 250 Ukraine hryvnia -- less than $9 usd! We were actually close to full at $6, but we went back for seconds to try more! We were stuffed.

At night time we hung out at the Milk Bar, and then explored the local nightlife.

The beautiful and deserted Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in the North of Ukraine.
Just over thirty years ago, when the Soviet Union still existed, this area was prosperous and promising, with population over 130 000 people and around 50 000 of them lived in the unique town Pripyat - one of nine population centers in the USSR with the status of Atom City. Since the sadly famous nuclear disaster that happened on the 26th April 1986, the town Pripyat has been abandoned and is known today as the Ghost Town Pripyat. After the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, civilian population from this area was evacuated starting with the people from Pripyat, and they never returned to live on this land...

Today the area has prospering nature and wildlife, the New Safe Confinement (a.k.a Sarcophagus II) covers the Unit No.4 that exploded in 1986 thus keeping the surroundings safe from its radioactive leftovers. The levels of radiation are within norms, thus making the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone safe and legally open for tourists from all around the world. Tourism into the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone is developing quickly, and the abandoned beauty of the Zone welcomes travelers from all over the world to witness the quiet and empty streets of Pripyat, the greatness of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the New Safe Confinement, abandoned villages and the not so abandoned town Chernobyl... As a bonus you’ll witness the gigantic Radar Duga 1 (a.k.a The Russian Woodpecker) responsible for tracking Nuclear Missiles back in the day, and many other locations.

♡ ADVENTURE - Kiev, Ukraine - February 2019 ♡

We explored Kiev for a weekend and loved what we found. Despite the questionable horseradish local vodka and even more questionable karaoke, we had a blast!

Kyiv Ukraine Metro | Local Food & Drinking Homebrews | Drunk Cherry????|☕One Love Espresso (Kiev)

In Kiev (Kyiv), my mother and I spent the days and the nights exploring local life.

On this day, I met up with my friend Pascha who took us on the local underground metro/subway. We had coffee and a delicious lunch at One Love Coffee Shop.

We found some local kvas (also known as liquid bread) on the street.

After that delicious lunch, then we headed to Expo Center of Ukraine, where there is a park. He joined his wife, and then we were on our own to explore. Once evening came, we decided to eat dinner inside the park at the many food stalls. At one if the stalls we even tried some homebrew alcohol shots, infused with various ingredients such as chili peppers.

Once it was later, then we took the metro over to Drunk Cherry, where we drank more liquer/alcohol and ate chocolates all heavily infused with cherry.

Late night, I ended up making friends and having beers at my local mini mart, downstairs from my Airbnb.

You gotta love Kiev. ❤

The Viking age lasted roughly 300 years. From the first recorded raid on an English monastery on Lindisfarne in 793 A.D. to 1066, when Norway's greatest King Harald III (aged 50!) died in berzerkergang (fighting bare-chested without armor and shield with an axe in each hand) from an arrow to his skull in an attempt to conquer England. A few months later another Viking, today known as William the Conquerer (actually related to Harald III) succeeded in taking England.

The Vikings raided and fought all over Europe. Often in the service of Norwegian Kings or as mercenaries for other European rulers. The Roman Emperor had his own Viking army known as the Varangian guard in Constantinople.

It was whilst being the leader of the Varangian guard that Harald Hardråde (later called Harald III of Norway and founder of Oslo) eventually amassed such wealth that he was able to successfully court the 2nd oldest daughter of one of contemporary Europe's most powerful rulers: Yaroslav The Wise. They married and returned to Norway where they founded what is today the capital of Norway, Oslo.

So who was this last Viking Queen of Norway? That's the story I investigate whilst exploring Kiev, the city she grew up in, before ascending to the Norwegian throne.

For more Viking history I highly recommend watching History channel's TV show; 'Vikings'. It's actually quite accurate in terms of the historical events they depict. Ragnar Lothbrok was indeed a Norwegian Viking King and Lagertha was a female warrior ruler. The woman who plays Lagertha in the TV show is actually a Canadian but with Ukrainian ancestry;

For more tangible Viking history if you for some reason find yourself in Norway's capital Oslo, a visit to see one of the few surviving Viking ships is a must. It's located at what's known as Vikingskipshuset on an island called Bygdoy. More information in English here:
