Yuki-Jinja Shrine in Kurama Mt.
A small Shinto shrine partway up Mt. Kurama, Yuki-jinja seems to embody the true spirit of Shinto: the reverence for the awesome power of nature.
主祭神 大己貴命(おほなむちのみこと)
少彦名命(すくなひこなのみこと)
A quiet shrine with a hall of worship built in Momoyama- style in moss-covered grounds
Because the shrine is situated at a steep slope requiring cable car in Kurama on the north side of Kyoto, visitors are recommended to wear walking shoes such as sneakers. The inconvenience makes the shrine a quiet place for worshipping with fewer tourists. Its mossy and rustic appearance is attractive. As the shrine is between the Sanmon gate and the main building of Kurama-dera Temple, it is recommended to take plenty of time to stop here when visiting Kurama-dera temple. Be careful because the cable car will not stop at Yuki-jinja.
The main and front shrines are Momoyama-style buildings reconstructed by Toyotomi Hideyori (son of Toyotomi Hideyosi who was one of the three great military commanders during the Warring States period of Japan.) The front shrine built in a rare style called Warihaiden (with a passage way at the center) is an Important Cultural Property.
The Kurama Fire Festival held from the morning of every October 22 to late in the night of the following day is especially famous and one of the three most eccentric festivals of Kyoto. After 18:00, men with 500 torches and other men carrying a mobile shrine walk wearing only loincloth. Torches are gathered to create a big fire enveloping the place with heated air; don’t miss the spectacular point of time and place of the festival.
Tengu Mikuji that is a small key chain in the shape of red-faced Tengu with huge nose (a mythical being that is half-god and half-specter) is popular among visitors.
The hike from Kurama-dera to Kifune Jinja 2017
[ Maniac Japan Travel -Kansai ]
Kurama's main attraction, Kurama-dera, is a Buddhist temple located along the steep wooded mountainside above the town. It takes about 30-45 minutes to climb up to the temple's main buildings from the town below. A cablecar (200 yen one way) leads about halfway up the mountain.
Along the ascent to Kurama-dera stands Yuki Jinja, a shrine famous for its Fire Festival (Kurama Hi Matsuri), held annually on October 22. Kurama-dera's main buildings stand on a terrace on the mountain slope, overlooking the wooded valley.
Behind the temple's main building, the hiking trail continues through the forest past several other temple structures to Kibune, a small town in the neighboring valley. The hike from Kurama-dera to Kibune takes about one hour and is steep at times.
Kibune (貴船) is a small town in a forested valley in the northern mountains of Kyoto City, which developed around Kifune Shrine. According to legend, a goddess traveled in a boat from Osaka all the way up the river into the mountains north of Kyoto, and Kifune Shrine was built at the site where her boat journey had come to an end.
Kifune Shrine is dedicated to the god of water and rain and believed to be the protector of those at sea. Here you can obtain a unique type of fortune written on paper slips (omikuji) that reveal their messages when dipped into water. Okunomiya, the inner sanctum and original site of Kifune Shrine, lies about one kilometer further up the valley. It has a large rock, known as the boat stone, which is said to be where the goddess' yellow boat is buried.
Magic Snow Scenery at Kifune Shrine in Kyoto.
During Shōgatsu here in Kyoto, we had a lot of snow, and I used the opportunity to visit the Kurama area of northern Kyoto. After visiting the Kurama dera temple I went to the Kifune Shrine (貴船神社). It was getting close to dusk and I knew that soon the red lanterns with be illuminated. The combination of the red lanterns, their yellow light, and covered with snow, would create a romantic experience.
I walked on towards the Okumiya Shrine (奥宮神社) a sub-shrine of the Kifune Shrine. More snow and Magic, this area of Kyoto is extremely beautiful and serene. The sound of the nearby river had a calming influence on me and when dusk set in and the lights turned on the lanterns, wow, romantic is the only word coming to mind. No coincidence that many young couples visit this shrine and area of Kyoto.

Magic Snow Scenery at Kurama Dera in Kyoto.
This year, during Shōgatsu here in Kyoto, it snowed and that is a rare event. There was lots of snow and I used to opportunity during the Hatsumōde period to visit Kurama dera and climb its famous mountain. There where not so many people as in some more popular shrines or temples. Follow me as I climb the mountain and take in the snowy scenery. The winding path to the main hall is lined with lanterns that where covered with snow. Along the way are many sub-temples and shrines, amongst them the famous Yuki Shrine.
When I reached the plateau were the Hon-dō hall is many people took turns standing on the power spot of Kurama dera and offering their prayers. Some people where warming their cold feet at an open fire and temple staff offered everyone some sake.
Going down the mountain I passed by the Tahō-tō Pagoda and used the cable car to go down.
I’ve been a few times to Kurama dera, but this time was special, magical I’d say and I didn’t even feel the cold.

Yuki-jinja
Yuki-jinja
Partway up the slope of Mt. Kurama, a great sacred cedar tree hundreds of years old stands proudly next to a time-honored shrine building. This is the entrance of Yuki-jinja, a mountain shrine set in the middle of virgin forest. Yuki-jinja was built with the special task of housing the much-revered deities which had once been enshrined in the Imperial Palace itself; these gods, it was hoped, would protect the city of Kyoto from disaster. Yuki-jinja is also well-known as the setting of one of Kyoto’s most extraordinary events, the Kurama Fire Festival, which draws spectators from all around; at other times, the relative remoteness of these peaceful grounds makes them the perfect place for escaping the crowds.

Akagami Shrine Goshado - Akita - 赤神神社五社堂 - 4K Ultra HD
Goshado, the central hall of Akagami Shrine, is thought to have been built around 1710. The shrine is composed of a total of five structures. The main structure in the middle enshrines Akagami. As such it is one of the rarest sites associated with the ancient Akagami Gongen worship. Elements such as the frog-leg struts and tie beam carvings typify Akita's religious architecture, making this site have significant historical value.
