Kikko Park was built upon the land where the residential castle of the Kikkawa clan, the former lords of Iwakuni, once stood. On these large grounds, there are valuable historic sites including the Mekata Residence, a home for a mid-level samurai which was constructed in the middle of the Edo Era (circa mid-18th century), Kinunkaku which was the residential castle for the Kikkawas, and Kikko Shrine where the ancestors of the clan are enshrined. The park has also cultivated many kinds of flora so it is well-known as a site of flowers.

On the other side of the beautifully arched Kintai-kyo Bridge in Iwakuni city, Yamaguchi Prefecture, visitors can see the statue of Kikkawa Hiroyoshi. Kikkawa, the 3rd lord of Iwakuni, was heavily involved in the construction of the bridge after the original bridge was washed away.
Behind Kikkawa’s statue is Kikko Park, a beautiful, spacious area blessed with nature. During the Edo Periods, the residences of the Kikkawa family were located here, in Kikko Park with relatives living nearby. As a result, in addition to the fountains and spectacular natural surroundings, Kikko Park contains ruminants of former samurai residences and museums displaying historic artifacts of this part of Japan.

Hours: 9:00 to 17:00
Closed: Mondays (if Monday is a national holiday, the museum will be closed the following day)
Admission: Free
This museum features artifacts on everyday life. However, there are Japanese traditional scroll paintings as well as displays of Kintai-kyo Bridge.

Starting with the armor of the samurai ranging from the Nara Era (8th century) to the Edo Era (19th century), the museum has a collection of old art works numbering 6000 items including Nationally Important Cultural Properties and 200 items on permanent display. In “Life and Death Culture”, you will observe armor that shows how the warriors lived while in “Cultures of Life”, precious tools which assisted them in daily life are on display.

Iwakuni Art Museum, located on the other side of the Kintai-kyo Bridge in Iwakuni city, Yamaguchi Prefecture, features glassware, samurai armor, ceramics, and the furniture of Iwakuni's feudal lords.

Japan Trip Kikko Shrine Obscure but nice place in Kikko Park, important cultural property close to Kintai-kyo Bridge and Iwakuni castle Iwakuni, Yamaguchi 04 Moopon
After crossing the Kintai-kyo Bridge, visitors are greeted by the statue of the man who initiated the bridge's construction, Kikkawa Hiroyoshi, the third lord of Iwakuni. In the area behind the statue, there are a number of sites of interest centered around Kikko Park, a spacious park with walking paths, plants and fountains.
Kikko Shrine is the family shrine of Iwakuni's powerful Kikkawa family. The shrine was constructed in 1884, and is situated above the living quarters of the family's former residence. It was designated as a cultural asset of national importance in 2004.
Kikko Park and its various attractions are located a few steps from Kintai-kyo Bridge.
Buses travel from both Iwakuni Station and Shin-Iwakuni Station to Kintai-kyo bus stop. The trip takes 20 minutes and costs 250 yen from Iwakuni Station (buses every 5-15 minutes), or 15 minutes and 290 yen from Shin-Iwakuni Station (2-3 buses per hour).
