Kikuchi Gorge in northern Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Japan is a remnant wild community focused around the pristine waters of the Kikuchi River. The stream side forest and adjacent hills have been left in their primeval state and are home to a dizzying array of plants. One group of plants common to the gorge, especially near the river, are epiphytes - plants that grow on other plants. While mosses and ferns dominate the epiphytic community here, others like clubmosses and orchids can be found as well. This video shows many of the common epiphytes of the gorge. The day it was taken was rainy and cool and at the peak of fall leaf color - the main draw for most people this time of year.

水のふるさと熊本を代表するスポットが2018年3月24日、約2年ぶりに一般公開されます。
2016年4月、熊本地震で甚大な被害を受けて閉山していましたが、関係者のたゆまぬ努力で復旧が進み、皆さんを受け入れる準備が整いました。
本当にうれしいです。これまで支援していただいた全国の皆さまと関係者の方々に深く感謝いたします。

The water site of Kumamoto’s hotspot is going to open at 3/24, 2018, this is the general open after 2 year for earthquake happened.
2016/04, the Kumamoto earthquake made the big damage, so it made the Kikuchi Gorge had to close. However, the people who related to the Kikuchi Gorge was working very hard for reopen the Kikuchi Gorge, right now, we are still preparing for the reopen for everyone who would like to come in.
We are very appreciating that for the support and help from all the country.

菊池渓谷は、菊池市街地から東へ約 17ｋｍ、阿蘇外輪山の北西部の標高５００ｍ～８００ｍの間に位置し、 1,180haの広大な面積からなる憩いの森です。
菊池川の源をなす菊池渓谷は、うっそうとした天然生広葉樹で覆われ、その間をぬって流れる淡水は、大小さまざまな瀬と渕と滝をつくり、その変化に富む渓流と,美しい森林とがおりなす姿は絶景です。
また、天然クーラーと称され、夏の平均水温は13度と低く、身を切るような清流は避暑地として最適であり、渓谷ぞいは、川のせせらぎと小鳥のさえずりで、楽しい夢をさそい、秋は渓流に映える紅葉がすばらしく、春は新緑、冬は全山に霧氷の花が咲くなど四季を通うじて訪れる人々の心をなごませてくれるところです。

Please visit us at: Kikuchi Gorge is a wild protected river in northern Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan. The gorge sits on the edge of the vast Aso Caldera, in relatively low mountains (~400-900 meters). The waters of the gorge are derived from groundwater coming off the huge Aso-Kuju uplands, percolating through kilometers of substrate, and in doing so becoming very pure. Indeed, they are rated among the top 100 best in all of Japan.
The gorge is home to the waterfall laden Kikuchi River that is itself surrounded by old growth temperate rainforest. This forest is composed of a diverse range of broadleaf deciduous and evergreen tree species, as well as many herbs, ferns, and epiphytic plants. Mosses are virtually everywhere. In the fall, the maple tree species, of which there are many, turn on their colors for a breathtaking display. So, sit back and enjoy the show - flowing water and brilliant leaves engaging in a magical dance of beauty.
