Sulphur Banks Trail - Kilauea Volcano (Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii)
This is the Sulphur Banks Trail in Volcanoes National Park. It's probably the first hike you will find once parking at the visitors center. It's pretty cool and reminded us of Yellowstone National Park.

The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching and is accessible year-round.

Available for sale in the Center are maps, guidebooks, books and videos about the volcanoes, Hawaiiana, history, plants and every topic you can imagine pertinent to the Park, even souvenirs. There are free brochures and pamphlets on various trails, attractions, hiking safety and lava viewing hazards and precautions. Starting at 9 a.m. and showing every hour on the hour is a 20 minute informative movie about the Park; the film changes from time to time, but always contains spectacular footage of eruptions, information on Volcanology and the natural and human history of the Park.
The Visitor Center is open daily from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m.; there are public restrooms, water and pay phones available. Tuesday evenings the Center is open until 9 p.m. for their After Dark In The Park series of free lectures that start at 7 p.m. Lecture topics range from natural history to geology to topics of local and regional importance and are presented by experts and community leaders. This is one of the three Hawaiian islands that I decided to visit. I spent three days there, drove 345 miles by car and visited, incl. the places described below.
I think that three days on such a large island is a bit too little. The distances between the points to travel are longer than on other Hawaiian islands.
Big Island, or Hawaiʻi Island is the largest and the southeasternmost island located in the U.S. state of Hawaii. The island of Hawaiʻi is the third largest island in Polynesia, behind the two main islands of New Zealand. Administratively, the whole island encompasses Hawaiʻi County. The county seat and largest city is Hilo where I lived.

In Hawaii, Kilauea Volcano Erupts, Spewing Lava and Gases Near Homes
Hawaii — Fresh volcanic eruptions on the southern end of the island of Hawaii after a series of tremors left residents displaced and frightened as the authorities evacuated the state’s largest park on Friday and worked to keep people out of two subdivisions that had been evacuated.
Following days of small earthquakes, a more powerful one with a magnitude of 6.9 hit the south flank of the volcano at 12:33 p.m. Hawaii time. There was no tsunami expected, according to a statement from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, but “many areas may have experienced strong shaking.”
That earthquake, which set off rock slides on park trails, forced park officials to close down and evacuate Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which encompasses 333,000 acres — 13 percent of the Big Island’s total area. Closing the park is a rare occurrence, Jessica Ferracane, a spokeswoman for the park, said on Friday afternoon.
About 2,600 visitors were being evacuated from the park, Ms. Ferracane said. “It’s a double cruise ship day,” she said, adding that there were people camping in the backcountry. More than two million people visited the park in 2017, the year after its centennial.

Kilauea Summit Hot Spot
(This video shows how the ongoing eruption in Halemaumau Crater on the summit of Kilauea got started in March 12, 2008. At that time there was just a glowing spot on the surface, lots of gases coming out through cracks, but no actual vent)
A new gas vent on the wall of Halemaumau Crater has created a hot spot of glowing rocks (not liquid lava). These rocks are heated to a glowing temperature by the superheated gases from the interior of the volcano.
The large plume appeared almost directly below the viewing platform used by visitors after a short hike from Crater Rim Drive. The viewing platform and the southern portion of Crater Rim Drive had already been closed for several weeks due to the increase in sulfur dioxide and other gases.
This video clip is composed of three still photos at the start and then about one minute of video of the hot spot.

Yellowstone M2.3 and M2.8 - Kilauea in Hawaii M5.5 possible collapse? Slow slip detected WA State
Please utilize the parts sections below if this video is too long for you. So, it seems seismicity is strange once again! Things are shifting and changing beneath our feet. A renewed ETS (episodic tremor and slip), also known as slow slip, event is occurred in Washington State on the eastern/northeastern portion of the Olympic Peninsula. I live not too far so is there an earthquake approaching where I live? Also, Yellowstone got struck by a M2.3 and M2.8 earthquake, in separate locations, and a very strong M5.5 struck just to the SE of Kilauea Caldera on the Big Island of Hawaii. Could this be a sign another eruption period is approaching? That has yet to be seen so lets monitor these areas closely!
