Kilfane Glen and Waterfall Photography Excursion
Load up your photography kit bag and your comfy walking shoes and join Dublin Photography School as we head down the country to Kilfane Glen and Waterfall. Kilfane is a picturesque paradise with a waterfall tumbling it's way to a rushing stream and woodland paths leading to a cottage orné. It is made up of tiny bridges, which sit among ancient trees, wild fox-gloves, ferns and other historically correct 18th century planting. To capture the true essence of the place, you have the gardens, which cover about 15 acres of easily accessible natural landscape. These will offer you varied and fantastic photographic opportunities throughout. On route home we will make a stop in the village of Leighlinbridge (meaning 'half glen of the bridge) on the river barrow, for more unique photographic opportunities. see more at

Thomastown & Local Attractions
Thomastown & Local Attractions - County Kilkenny, Ireland
Thomastown is a market town with scenic streetscapes on the river Nore.
There are a number of disused water mills along the banks of the river. River water was diverted to a waterwheel along a head race. The force of the water rotated a wheel that in turn rotated an axle that drove the mills machinery to grind wheat, barley and oats. Grain was stored and dried in the lofts of the mill. The milled wheat was used for making bread and the milled barley and oats were used to feed cattle, horses, sheep and hens.
Grennan Castle was built in 1210. In 1650 is was besieged by Cromwell’s army.
It is said that in 1533, Anne Boleyn second wife of King Henry 8 and mother of Elizabeth 1, stayed overnight in Grennan Castle on her way to London to her wedding. There was a banquet held in her honour.

Sweetman's Castle, Thomastown, Kilkenny, Ireland - 2016
The residents today know the castle as Mullins Castle for reasons we will not go into here. The bridge next to the castle is named after a Nicholas Mullins who died in 1921 in the Irish War of Independence, but we won't go into that here.
Close to Croan Cottages ~ Thomastown, Jerpoint Abbey +
It's not necessary to go far from Croan Cottages to experience a sample of all Ireland has to offer. Jerpoint Abbey is just outside Thomastown and is one of the best examples of a Cistercian ruin to be found in all Ireland. Founded in 1158 -1180 with additions to the site in the 14th and 15th centuries, the Abbey sits on the River Arrigle and is steeped in history. On to Thomastown, or Baile Mhic Andain in Irish, which is the second largest town in Kilkenny County and a wonderful place to shop for your groceries and supplies for the cottage, to stop in for a pint or to dine out. Across the bridge stop in at the Coach House for a tasty lunch or dinner and give them my regards. Thomastown sits on the River Nore and you can't miss the ruin of the 13th Century Gothic Church as you come into the town. Tullaherin Monastic Site is also close by and the roundtower dates from the early 9th century. There is not much doubt that this site was dedicated to Saint Kieran but there is some argument as to whether he is buried there or not. It seems possible as one source of the name is purported to be Tulach Chiarain in Irish meaning, The Mound of St. Kieran. Mount Juliet is also worth a visit with 15oo acres of gardens and woodland it is an old estate made into a lovely hotel with many amenities including a lovely golf course. All of this so close to Croan House and Cottages it can easily be enjoyed in a day. Photos courtesy of Allison Nelson. For more information regarding accommodations at Croan Cottages go to
