If you are wondering what to see and do when you visit Kilkenny you will be pleasently surprised with the number of churches, historic sights and pubs to visit. From the 12th century castle, to the Irish music playing in the pubs to the Medieval Mile there are plenty of things to enjoy in Kilkenny. Not to mention the fresh Smithwick's beer!

Kilkenny Castle And Its History
Kilkenny castle built 1195 by William marshall 1st earl of Pembroke
to control a fording-point of the river nore and the junction of several
routeways,it was of normal occupation and in its original thirteenth-
century condition it would have an important element of the defencies of the town with four large circular corner towers and a massive ditch,part of which can be still seen today on the parade
(BUTLER DYNESTY) james butler 3rd earl of Ormond bought the
castle in in1391 and established himself as ruler of the area this
james built gowran castle in 1385 and made it his usual residence
he is buried in st Mary's collegiate church gowran james was
called the earl of gowran the butler dynesty then ruled the
surrounding area for centuries they were earls marqesses and
dukes of Ormond lady Margaret butler was born in Kilkenny castle
she was married to sir William Boleyn who was the paternal grandmother
of ann Boleyn second wife of king henry the V111 of England
the butler name was first FITZWALTER they changed it to
butler in1185

Kilkenny, Ireland has a medieval history, starting with the Early Gothic St. Canice's Cathedral, which was built in the 13th century, although it's been a religious site since the 6th century. Inside, you will find several tombs that are over 500 years old. Kilkenny Castle was originally built in the 12th century as part of the defense of the town. It was the principal Irish residence of the powerful Butler family for almost 600 years. We took a self-guided tour inside. Finally, we stopped at historic Kyteler's Inn for dinner. We listened to some great traditional Irish music and my 18 year-old niece (the legal drinking age in Ireland is 18) had her first alcoholic drink ever! (yeah, right)

Kilkenny is one of the most beautiful towns in the Republic Of Ireland and numerous historic buildings highlight the city’s colourful past. Since the end of the 12th century, Kilkenny Castle, located close to the Nore River, has been the town’s most prominent landmark.In 1391 the castle was acquired by the Butler’s, an aristocratic family that influenced Kilkenny right up until the 20th century. The city was founded by Saint Canice who in the 6th century had a monastery built close to the River Nore and at the time of the Anglo Norman invasion of Ireland in 1169 four church communities existed here. Located in Parliament Street, Rothe House dates back to 1594 and is another of the city’s popular historic sights. Renovated in 1966, the building complex contains three houses that are grouped around two tranquil inner courtyards. Kilkenny has retained its unique historic atmosphere right up to the present day and can thus justifiably be referred to as ‘The jewel of the Irish Middle Ages’.

This short video also includes Kilkenny Castle, which is dramatically situated overlooking River Nore, and is a powerful symbol of Anglo-Norman power in Ireland's past. The original stone structure was built for William Marshal, 4th Earl of Pembroke, early in the 13th century. However the first (wooden) castle on the site was probably built by Marshall's father-in-law Richard fitz Gilbert de Clare, better known as Strongbow. Later, the castle became the seat of the Butler Family and today, the castle and grounds are managed by the Office of Public Works.

I moved to Ireland last August but I just started exploring the country. Kilkenny has been the first city we have explored (aside from Dublin). It is the medieval capital of Ireland. It is a small city with so much things to do in one day. Visit their medieval monuments which I included in my vlog, drink local beers in a pub, walk in their colorful streets and meet the locals!

Kilkenny is an iconic Irish town in the southeast of the country. We visit this historic place in typical Irish weather.
Starting at the medieval Kilkenny Castle (built in 1195 by Norman occupiers) we walk a bit on the Medieval Mile into the city centre.
Our tour continues to the see some old churches before returning to the castle. We end the walk in full rain at the Hurling statue, and we which is a specially Irish sport.
