Top best places to visit in Kilkenny, Ireland
Kilkenny is a small but very popular city in the ‘Sunny South East’ of Ireland.
The city is famous for its medieval architecture and is referred to as the Marble City after the black polished limestone quarried around the city.
The principal attraction and dominant feature in the city is the Kilkenny Castle.
This Norman Castle and Gardens was built around year 1200 and was an important element of the defenses in this town.
Another stunning building is home to one of the oldest schools in Ireland, St Kieran’s College.
The city also has some museums that are worth a visit, one of it is the Rothe House, a unique 16th century Irish merchant’s townhouse complex.
There is also a brewery, you can take a tour in called Smithwick’s Experience.
However most people come here just relax or to stroll along the River Nore.
Kilkenny's heritage is evident in the city and environs including historic buildings, such as:
Built as place for collecting tolls, the Tholsel, is used today as the city hall.
The main City Library is of the quaint stone structure from the turn of the last century.
A significant local landmark, St Mary’s Cathedral, is situated on the highest point in the city.
Surrounded by the old city walls, including the last surviving gate of the town, there is also a 14th-century Dominican church, an impressive Black Abbey.
The second largest medieval cathedral in the country, St Canice’s Cathedral, has one of Ireland’s only accessible Round Towers.
From the top of this tower is the most amazing, 360 degree view of Kilkenny.
