Kilkenny is a medieval town in southeast Ireland. Its grand Kilkenny Castle was built in 1195 by Norman occupiers. The town has deep religious roots and many well-preserved churches and monasteries, including imposing St. Canice’s Cathedral and the Black Abbey Dominican priory, both from the 13th century. It's also a crafts hub, with shops along its winding lanes selling pottery, paintings and jewellery.

Trip aboard the RPSI's 'Radio Train' to Kilkenny (21-8-2016)
On Sunday 21st August 2016 the RPSI ran their annual railtour from Dublin's Connolly station to Kilkenny and back. Following the success of previous trips the tour ran as a 'Radio Train' with an onboard DJ providing music throughout the coaches.
WT class 2-6-4T steam loco No. 4 was due to haul the tour throughout with it's set of 1960's Cravens & BR Mk1 generator van however a hot box detector was set off at Sallins due to an overheating bearing on No.4 and subsequently 071 class leader no. 071 was sent from Inchicore to haul the tour to Kilkenny where shunt release loco 076 would take over for the return trip to Dublin.
To add a bit of colour to the tour Co. Fermanagh's Church Hill Silver Band travelled onboard and provided entertainment at Dublin, Sallins & Kilkenny.

Thomastown & Local Attractions
Thomastown & Local Attractions - County Kilkenny, Ireland
Thomastown is a market town with scenic streetscapes on the river Nore.
There are a number of disused water mills along the banks of the river. River water was diverted to a waterwheel along a head race. The force of the water rotated a wheel that in turn rotated an axle that drove the mills machinery to grind wheat, barley and oats. Grain was stored and dried in the lofts of the mill. The milled wheat was used for making bread and the milled barley and oats were used to feed cattle, horses, sheep and hens.
Grennan Castle was built in 1210. In 1650 is was besieged by Cromwell’s army.
It is said that in 1533, Anne Boleyn second wife of King Henry 8 and mother of Elizabeth 1, stayed overnight in Grennan Castle on her way to London to her wedding. There was a banquet held in her honour.
