Kilmacduagh Monastery is a ruined abbey near the town of Gort in County Galway, Ireland. It was the birthplace of the Diocese of Kilmacduagh. It was reportedly founded by Saint Colman, son of Duagh in the 7th century, on land given him by his cousin King Guaire Aidne mac Colmáin of Connacht. The Round Tower is the tallest in Ireland and has a distinctive lean of some 2 feet.

Le monastère de Kilmacduagh a été érigé au VIIe siècle dans le comté de Galway. Il se situe à 5 km de la ville de Gort.
Ce monastère possède la plus haute tour ronde d'Irlande (hauteur de 30 m) et il fait partie des sites les plus importants de ce pays.
Cette tour a la même particularité que la Tour de Pise: elle est légèrement penchée.
On y retrouve également les vestiges d'une cathédrale, quelques églises et la maison d'un abbé.
Les murs de la cathédrale sont encore présents et nous permettent de nous imaginer à quoi ressemblait jadis ce lieu de prière.
Il y a un magnifique cimetière qui contient des tombes et des croix celtiques, dont certaines datent de la création du monastère.
La tombe de Saint-Colman, fils de Duagh et patron du diocèse, qui vécut au VIIe siècle, se trouverait derrière la cathédrale.
A ne pas manquer, ce lieu est empreint de sérénité.

Kilmacduagh Monastery was founded in the 7th century, think about that...... It was so peaceful and serene and basically in the middle of nowhere. We believe this is this the tallest tower in Ireland. The reason why the door is 20 ft off the ground is so the vikings couldn't ram it in so easily. We hope you enjoy our video! J & C

Kilbannon Round Tower Tuam Co Galway
The church of Benen was the mother church of the Archdiocese of Tuam, older than Tuam itself, as Benignus was older the St. Jarlath. And it importance was attested by the fact that a round tower was erected there about 1000 A.D., for the round tower usually marked the residence of an important chief or king, and served to guard the church that was built in its shadows. Nor is it unlikely that Kilbannon would have become the seat of the Archbishop if the O'Connor kings had not made Tuam their chief residence in the eleventh century. This was done by Aedh O'Connor who defeated O'Flaherty in 1047, and who then selected Tuam as a convenient place for attacking these powerful O'Flaherty chiefs. The churches of the Conmaicne of Dunmore were in these days subject to Kilbannon, just as those of Conmaicne Mara and Conmaicne of Cuil Talach were subject to the Abbot of Cong. In the time of Turlough O'Conner Tuam had risen to such prominence that it was made the See of the Archbishop as soon as diocesan episcopacy supplanted finally the old monastic system. Then Kilbannon ceased to be the ruling church, and when the Chapter was formed, the tithes of Kilbannon formed part of the revenue of the Chapter. But as a Patrician church its revenues were claimed by the Archbishop of Armagh, and in 1216 , when the Archbishop of Tuam was sending his complaints to Rome, he complained that the Primate had despoiled him of the Church of Kilbannon. The dispute dragged on. At 1243 it is recorded that Finuachta O'Lugadha, Comhrab of Benen, and great dean of Tuam died; and when the final settlement was arrived at between Tuam and Armagh in 1351, among the places definitely attached to Tuam was Kilbannon.

Kilmacduagh Monastery is located in a small village of the same name, about 5 km from the town of Gort.
The name of the place translates as church of Duagh's son.[1] It was reportedly the 7th century Saint Colman, son of Duagh who established a monastery here on land given to him by his cousin King Guaire Aidne mac Colmáin of Connacht, who had a fortified dwelling near what is today Dunguaire Castle.

The ruins of this medieval church are located in the village of Aghagower. The site contains the remains of a 12th century church and a 10th century round tower.
The founder of the first monastery here was St Senach who was created Bishop of Aghagower by St Patrick. The Round Tower, which is preserved up to the fourth floor, about 16m high. It has a round-headed doorway facing east 2.2m above the present ground level. It is about 1.5m high and 65cm wide.

The Bloody tower of Ardamullivan
Early 16th Century Fortress of the O'Shaugnessy family. Site of the bloody encounter in 1579 between Dermot O'Shaugnessy (loyal to Queen Elizabeth) and his nephew John, both of whom laid claim to the estate. Near the Southern gate the two men fought hand-to-hand, the outcome being the deaths of both. Ardamullivan, County Galway.

Kilmacduagh - a song and a place in Galway, Ireland
This song is named after the ancient ruins of the Kilmacduagh Monastery.
Near Gort in the county of Galway, Ireland.
Pronounced kill-mac-doo, the monastery was founded in the 7th century. Most of the present buildings date from the 13th - 14th centuries. The monastery contains a round tower, notable as both a fine example of this particularly Irish feature but also because of its noticeable lean, over 2 feet from the vertical.
The monks were obviously expecting trouble when they had built the round tower. The tower is about 100 feet tall, with the only doorway about 23 feet above ground level. The reason for the doorway's height was that of safety during attack (of which there were many); the monks could pull up the ladder, leaving no access to the attackers. However, round towers really weren't that safe - the Vikings simply piled up timber around them and lit it up. If the flames didn't cause the tower to crumble, the smoke drove the monks out.
The walls are over six feet thick at the base, underneath which lie some skeletons.
