Holland | The windmills at Kinderdijk are a group of 19 monumental windmills in the Alblasserwaard polder, in the province of South Holland, Netherlands. Most of the mills are part of the village of Kinderdijk in the municipality of Molenwaard, and one mill, De Blokker, is part of the municipality of Alblasserdam. Built in 1738 and 1740, to keep water out of the polder, it is the largest concentration of old windmills in the Netherlands and one of the best-known Dutch tourist sites. Kinderdijk is a good example of watermanagement. The mills are listed as national monuments and the entire area is a protected village view since 1993. Beetje oefenen met vliegen (recreatief) en tegelijkertijd filmen, dit is mijn 4de vlucht met o.a. Kinderdijk, nu eens vanuit de lucht. Flinke afstand houden van de molens en zeker niet rond de molens vliegen zonder toestemming is het devies.
Little bit of flight practice (recreational) and at the same time filming. This is my 4th flight with among others the mills of Kinderdijk. Keeping a good distance from the mills and no flying near the mills without given permission is my motto.

De molens van Kinderdijk betreffen negentien molens in het noordwesten van de Alblasserwaard, een streek in de provincie Zuid-Holland. Alhoewel ze worden aangeduid als behorend tot het dorpje Kinderdijk (gemeente Molenwaard) ligt één molen net daarbuiten (De Blokker), in de gemeente Alblasserdam. Het gaat om poldermolens, die twee molengangen vormen en een grote (ook internationale) toeristische trekpleister zijn. Alle negentien molens van het complex zijn eigendom van de Stichting Werelderfgoed Kinderdijk. Sinds 1997 staan ze op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO en het gebied is tevens een beschermd dorpsgezicht. De molenrijen zijn alleen te voet of per fiets goed te bezichtigen. Een van de molens, vrij dicht bij de bebouwing van Kinderdijk, is ook van binnen te bezichtigen. De molens bij Kinderdijk zijn gebouwd vanaf het einde van de vijftiende eeuw, maar de huidige molens dateren bijna allemaal uit 1738 en 1740.
The Kinderdike windmills cover nineteen windmills in the northwest of the Alblasserwaard, a region in the province of South Holland. Although they are referred to as belonging to the village of Kinderdike (municipality of Molenwaard), one mill is just outside (De Blokker), in the municipality of Alblasserdam. These are polder mills, which form two mills and are a large (also international) tourist attraction. All nineteen mills of the complex are owned by the World Heritage Foundation Kinderdike. Since 1997 they are on the World Heritage List of UNESCO and the area is also a protected village. The mill rows can only be visited on foot or by bicycle. One of the mills, quite close to the buildings of Kinderdike, can also be visited from the inside. The windmills at Kinderdike were built from the end of the fifteenth century, but the current windmills date almost all from 1738 and 1740.

Een dagje uit naar molencomplex Kinderdijk: uniek & iconisch waterbeheer
Een groot deel van Nederland ligt tot ongeveer 7 meter onder zeeniveau. Nederlanders merken hier niets van. Vernuftig watermanagement, bestaande uit onder andere dijken, duinen, stuwen, sluizen, molens en gemalen, zorgt hiervoor. Zelfs bij springvloed blijven de Nederlandse voeten droog, en dat is maar goed ook.
Het meest belangwekkende aspect van UNESCO Werelderfgoed Kinderdijk is ongetwijfeld de unieke verzameling van 19 authentieke windmolens uit de 18e eeuw die wereldwijd als Nederlands icoon worden beschouwd. Kortom: een schitterend en onvergetelijk dagje uit!
Kinderdijk windmills: unique & iconic water management
A significant part of Holland is situated up to approximately 7 meters below sea level. The Dutch don’t notice any of this though, because an incredibly innovative and intricate system keeps the ever-rising seawater from flooding the land. Even during spring tide, the Dutch are safely guarded from being washed away.
The most important aspect of UNESCO World Heritage Kinderdijk is undoubtedly the unique collection of 19 authentic windmills, which are considered a Dutch icon throughout the entire world. A wonderful and unforgettable day trip in the Netherlands for the entire family!

HOLLAND: Kinderdijk - Windmills in winter
Around 1740 a network of 19 windmills was built to drain the
surrounding of Kinderijk. This surrounding is a beautiful example of a typical Dutch landscape: the polder: areas of land below sea level that are protected by dikes.
Kinderdijk is the only place in the world with so many windmills so
close together in an authentic polder landscape. The nineteen mills, pumping stations, low and high 'boezems' (storage basins), ditches and sluices together form an ingenious water management system in the low-lying polders. This is a typical Dutch, world-class landscape with delightful views, overwhelming cloud formations and stunning nature.
The Kinderdijk windmills are considered a Dutch icon throughout the entire world. The seventeen windmills that were used for water drainage were built between 1738 and 1740. Before then, the area already had polder mills, two of which can still be seen. For many years, these windmills kept the low-lying, peat land of the Alblasserwaard dry. This land was continually threatened by floods and soil compaction. In Kinderdijk, the almost one thousand years of 'battling the water' is still visible in the polder landscape. It’s with good reason, that the Kinderdijk-Elshout windmill complex was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1997.
The nature surrounding Kinderdijk is extremely diverse, ranging from flying birds to crawling amphibians, swimming fish and creeping weasels. Every now and then, rare plants are found and the insect population is huge. Thanks to the immense biodiversity, a walk or bike ride around Kinderdijk and the Alblasserwaard is an experience to remember. In 1997, the windmill complex of Kinderdijk was added to the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage list because of its unique character. UNESCO considers the polder area with its dykes, boezems, mills and pumping stations to be proof of human inventiveness in reclaiming and protecting the land. This is worldwide recognition of the fact that this unique area must be preserved for the future.
The gorgeous windmills of Kinderdijk are part of a unique phenomenon. Nowhere else in the world can you find the complete history of water management at a single location. The windmills and pumping stations drain the excess water from the Alblasserwaard into the river Lek via the Elshout sluices. Subsequently, the river discharges the water into the sea.

De plaats is voornamelijk bekend om de Kinderdijkse molens. De voornaamste bedrijvigheid bestaat uit scheepsbouw.
