World's largest kinetic art sculpture unveiled at Changi Airport
SINGAPORE, 4 July 2012 -- Passengers and airport visitors entering the Departure Check-in Hall at Singapore Changi Airport's Terminal 1 (T1) can expect to stop in their tracks and be captivated by a new art installation. Kinetic Rain, as it is titled, takes pride of place at the terminal, enthralling visitors with its fluidity, distinctive shapes, elegant and refined movements and precision-perfect technology.
Kinetic Rain, installed as part of T1's recent refurbishment, is the icon of the revamped Departure Check-in Hall. This specially commissioned sculpture, a first in an airport globally, comes as a pair, each installed several metres apart from each other and visible from many areas of the Departure Check-in Hall.
Kinetic Rain is made up of 1,216 bronze droplets that transform elegantly into multiple shapes, akin to poetry in motion. Carrying an aviation theme, the key element in every shape shows the movement of flight through slow, fluid movements. Some of the more recognisable shapes include an aeroplane, hot air balloon and a kite. One can also make out a dragon and a flock of birds amongst the 16 different programmed segments.
Each droplet is connected to motors installed in the ceiling of the Departure Check-in Hall. The motors contain a high precision rotary encoder which keeps track of the exact position of each droplet. A computer programme is used to control the movement of the droplets to form Kinetic Rain's unique shapes and patterns. A video on the making-of Kinetic Rain can be viewed here.
Kinetic Rain was created over a span of 20 months. Artists, programmers and technologists were engaged to analyse the space available at T1 and conceptualise a masterpiece that would be representative of the new terminal. The refurbished T1 is aptly themed 'Tropical City' in keeping with Singapore's garden city status and where rain, is very much a part of the tropical climate.
Mr Yeo Kia Thye, Senior Vice President for Airport Operations, Changi Airport Group, said, When we decided to upgrade Terminal 1 in 2008, we were mindful that people have fond memories of the terminal including the old Mylar Cords, the circular curtain of water that straddled three stories of the building. We wanted an art sculpture, which we found in Kinetic Rain, that was able to add the signature touch linking back to T1's illustrious past in a new and exciting way.
With more than a thousand raindrops working together in harmony, Kinetic Rain also symbolises the thousands in the airport community who work together every day to provide our passengers and visitors with a positively surprising and memorable Changi Experience.

All they have to do is scan the QR code present at the display boards at the T1 Departure Check-in Hall with their smartphones. This latest fascinating installation at Changi Airport Terminal 1, Singapore, is conceived by Art+Com, a German design firm led by Jussi Angesleva, a German-based Finnish artist, & will be officially open on 18th July 2012.

Kinetic Rain is an artwork designed for Terminal 1 at Singapore’s Changi Airport. The kinetic sculpture adds a contemplative element to the lively transit space of the departure hall.
Kinetic Rain consists of two parts installed above the terminal’s two central escalators. Each symmetrical element is composed of 608 copper-plated aluminium drops. The drops are connected by steel wires to computer-controlled motors that raise and lower them with precision.

World's Largest Kinetic Rain Sculpture at Singapore Changi 2020
Kinetic Rain is a moving sculpture at Singapore Changi Airport. It was installed in early July 2012 in the departure check-in hall of Terminal 1 as part of the terminal's refurbishment. Spanning an area of 75 square metres (810 sq ft) and a height of 7.3 metres (24 ft), it has been billed as the world's largest kinetic sculpture.
The installation consists of two separate segments, installed several meters apart. Each segment consists of 608 copper-plated aluminum raindrops, each weighing 180 grams (6.3 oz) and is suspended by a thin wire. Computer-controlled motors attached to the wires can move each raindrop up and down independently, thereby allowing the raindrops to form elaborate moving shapes. The installation is programmed to arrange the raindrops such that they create the contour of flight-related objects such as an airplane, kite or hot air balloon during a 15-minute loop.
Kinetic Rain was created over a period of two years by artists, animators and programmers from the German design firm Art+Com. Its cost has not been made public.[2] According to Art+Com, the sculpture aims to be a source of identity for its location, and provides a moment for passengers to contemplate and reflect

Woman arrested in connection with damage of sculpture at Changi Airport - 03Nov2013
SINGAPORE: A video showing a woman in a white dress traipsing on the Kinetic Rain arts installation at Changi Airport Terminal 1 has been making the rounds online.
Responding to queries from Channel NewsAsia, police said they have arrested a woman in her 30s in connection with the incident, and that investigations are on-going.
The officers made the arrest at the scene after receiving a call for help at 8.28am on Saturday.
Channel NewsAsia understands that the woman is not a local and that she is still under detention.
A Channel NewsAsia viewer said that part of the installation was still functioning around 1pm on Sunday, but appeared to be shut down later on.
In a separate statement, Changi Airport said the sculpture was damaged by a member of public on Saturday.
We have referred the matter to the police and our engineers are arranging for the sculpture to be repaired, an airport spokesman said.
Kinetic Rain is the centrepiece of the newly-renovated Terminal 1, and is said to be the world's largest kinetic sculpture.

Kinetic Raindrop made of 1,216 bronze droplets, the two Kinetic Rain sculptures in Singapore Changi Terminal 1 are the latest addition to Changi Airport’s collection of art installations and displays. Measuring 9.8 metres by 4 metres, each sculpture can form 16 different shapes ranging from abstract art forms to recognisable patterns including an aeroplane, a hot air balloon, a kite and even a dragon.
Each droplet weighs 180 grams and is made of lightweight aluminium with a hollow centre. The droplets are specially coated with polished copper to prevent the surface from oxidisation or rust. Depending on the shape of the art form, the droplets travel a maximum distance of 7.3 metres from the ceiling to the lowest point of the pattern.
Designers of the Kinetic Rain created 3-dimensional models and animated them by hand. After the suite of patterns are formalised, they are fed into a computer programme which controls the motors manoeuvring the droplets. The motors contain a high precision rotary encoder which keeps track of the exact position of the droplet.
The Kinetic Rain sculpture was created over a span of 20 months. From the onset of the project, artists, programmers and technologists came together to analyse the space available and came out with a solution to develop an artwork that enhances the identity of Changi’s new Terminal 1.
Aptly themed ‘Tropical City’, Changi’s new Terminal 1 is synonymous with Singapore’s garden city reputation where rain is a common feature in the tropical climate. With more than a thousand raindrops working together in harmony, the Kinetic Rain sculpture also symbolises the coming together of the thousands in the airport community to provide a positively surprising Changi Experience for passengers and visitors. Kinetic Rain is the biggest and most complex kinetic sculpture of its kind in the world, located for the first time ever at Changi Airport.
