Los Cayos, Jardines del Rey. Cuba
Governor Diego Velázquez named this archipelago Jardines del Rey (The King’s Gardens) in honor of Spain’s Ferdinand the Catholic, in 1514. Now, 500 years later, this island chain hugging Cuba’s northern coast still has new things for you to discover!

¡Bienvenidos!
CAYO SANTA MARIA is a small key, 16 km (10 mi) long by 2 km (1.2 miles) wide, located in the Bahia de Buena Vista, off the northern coast of the main island of Cuba, in the province of Villa Clara. With its two neighbors, Cayo Las Brujas and Cayo Ensenachos, they together form a quiet resort destination with stunning beaches, called Los Cayos de Villa Clara. These cayos (keys) are connected to the main island of Cuba by a 48-km (30-mi) causeway (called Pedraplen in Spanish), from the coastal town of Caibarien.
These Cayos are part of a larger archipelago called Jardines del Rey (King's Garden), which is currently the most active area in Cuba for tourism development. Once completed, the archipelago should reach a capacity of about 32,000 rooms distributed in the following islands (from west to east): Cayo Las Brujas, Cayo Ensenachos, Cayo Santa Maria, Cayo Guillermo, Cayo Coco, Cayo Paredon Grande and Cayo Cruz. This Cuban archipelago may then become the largest beach resort destination in Cuba with almost twice as many rooms as currently found in Varadero.
Cayo Santa Maria is part of the Villa Clara province but is located only about 30 km (18.6 mi) as-the-crow-flies west from Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Coco, two other popular beach destinations in the nearby province of Ciego de Avila. Learn more about the other islands of: Jardines del Rey.
We learned there’s also a project to build a water park (either near the dolphinarium or at the east end of Cayo Santa Maria), and a golf course in Dolores, a village located a few kilometers from the town of Caibarien (where starts the causeway to reach the cayos). In a short period of time Cayo Santa Maria became the second largest beach resort in Cuba, after Varadero, but despite this fast development, it remains a nice, safe and quiet little island.
Cayo Santa Maria BeachCayo Santa Maria's main attraction is without a doubt its 13 km (8 mi) of magnificent fine sand beaches, divided in three sections. The beaches and hotels are all located along the northern coast of the island, while the south coast is mainly dominated by forests, salt marshes and mangroves.

Fly Fishing Nation Syndicate: The Gardens Of The Queen - Cuba
Named the Queen‘s Gardens by Christopher Columbus, the Jardines de la Reina is a pristine chain of islands. The island system runs more than one hundred miles back to the northwest, from Cuba‘s south-eastern coast. Most of the area we fish is fifty or more miles offshore and has been designated as a Cuban Marine Park in 1996 and now is the biggest Park in all the Caribbean area. As such, there is no commercial fishing in the area, and no other operators allowed.
With Cuba‘s continued protection it should remain a treasure forever. International Anglers and travellers alike rave about the diverse and prolific fishing grounds. Known for its exceptional ocean-side permit fisheries, as well for it’s outstanding Tarpon fishing throughout the migration it is rumoured to be one of the most consistent destinations in Cuba and worldwide.
After our fulminate start a few years ago and our record trip last year (2017) with 10Grand Slams and 1 Super Grand Slam, here some mellow vibes from our 2018 gig with our 7 Permit and 5 Slams.

This high definition Cayo Coco travel video was shot in Cuba in 2010. The video features images of Cayo Coco all inclusive beach resorts, as well as footage from Cayo Guillermo, and Playa Pilar.
The video begins on the causeway that links Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo to the mainland. This chain of islands also includes Cayo Romano and is known collectively as the Jardines del Rey which means Kings Gardens.
Mostly wild, these islands are composed of mangrove swamps and scrubland but are also host to a dozen all inclusive resorts, complete with sandy beaches and shallow water making it a good destination for families with children.
The Meliá Cayo Coco hotel, a luxury all inclusive resort features prominently in this video. Both interior and exterior shots are included, highlighting the beach, swimming pool and grounds. The gorgeous Cuban models we met here were friendly and helpful.
After seeing Cayo Coco we decided to check out Cayo Guillermo. We found that the beach resorts are mostly laid out in a similar fashion with a pool area, bar and restaurants, surrounded by various styles of accommodation. Another thing these resorts share in common is they are all set on beautiful white sand beaches.
The video ends with a visit to Playa Pilar that is said to be one of the best beaches in Cuba and you can see why. Backed by sand dunes, this unspoiled beach is named after Hemingways boat. There is a bar and restaurant near the beach. Plan to go there if you're in the area. We highly recommend it.

Actually, we don't want the tourist infrastructure to compete with nature but to play second fiddle to nature. So that there is no great impact. We reckon that when tourism on these islands is complete, which will be in many years yet to come, the tourist developments will never occupy more than five per cent of the total land area of the islands. So you realize, what we are trying to achieve is different.

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Trude Brattli, travel operator, from Norway
I think the Cubans are trying to sell Cuba, they are trying to sell the beaches and the cayos (islands) and they close the tourists up in the cayos but I think most of the tourists want to see the real Cuba. They want to go out, visit Santa Clara, Trinidad, whatever and they don't want to be locked up in the cayos where there are only tourists. So I think that is the main problem. They don't know what tourists want.

STORYLINE:
Two historic forts that overlook Old Havana host a trade fair this week aimed at promoting tourism, the fastest growing industry in Cuba.
The fair was declared open in typical Cuban style, with a carnival procession through the grounds of the San Carlos de la Cabana and Tres Reyes del Morro fortresses.
It celebrates an industry that has driven Cuba's economy ever since the collapse in 1991 of the communist island's primary economic sponsor for three decades, the Soviet Union.
Hotel capacity has tripled since 1990, to 35-thousand rooms, with an annual growth in tourism of 18 per cent reported over the past five years.
But visitors to the trade fair will find there is still much of the island to discover.
The so-called Jardines del Rey (Gardens of the King), named in 1513 in honour of the then King of Spain, Fernando, is the name give to a coral archipelago off the north coast of Cuba that is made up of 400 islands.
The best known island resorts to date are Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo.
Plans are in place to continue exploring and developing the Jardines del Rey, where visitors have increased six fold since 1994, rising to145-thousand a year.
But the Ministry of Tourism says care is being taken not to destroy an otherwise virgin stretch of coastline.
Cuban tourism has developed a successful partnership with foreign investors, and an estimated 50 countries are taking part in this week's fair.
But the island's emphasis on package tours does not agree with all tourist operators.

Sharks of Jardines de la Reina, Cuba
This is video of diving with reef and silky sharks in the Garden Of The Queen of the coast of Cuba. I had the pleasure of diving with Mario Delgado Malagon, an architect and experienced diver and underwater photographer from the Dominican Republic, who sent me this video that he shot. Unfortunately, I missed this particular dive because of my sore leg. The other divers are Roberto, the dive master, Carlos, Mario's dive partner and Doug Hays of Oregon Tackle. The sharks are being fed Lionfish which are an invasive and destructive species in the Caribbean. The dive company is Avalon Dive Center

US, Cuba Travel News: Miami beaches feel the heat from Cuban competition
Aug 19, 2015
Anchor intro: In a new era of U.S.-Cuba relations - new waves of enthusiastic American tourists are expected to crash onto the island nation's shores. And that's causing some anxiety among Cuba's tropical neighbors- worried about the new competition for tourist dollars. Miami is no exception. As CCTV's Nitza Soledad Perez reported, officials there believe the answer to attracting more tourists, is right under their feet.

Cuba has just about everything you could imagine...
Cuba is among the most exciting islands in the caribbean. Whereas other islands have one or two major attractions: the beach, say, and perhaps one or two historic monuments.
There are dramatic mountainous landscapes, wild and unspoilt valleys, sweeping vistas of sugar cane, tobacco plantations glowing emerald green against the vermilion earth of the fields, seven exquisite cities dating from the mid-fifteenth century, an amazing variety of flora and fauna, some of the world’s most beautiful beaches and above all, Cuba’s greatest asset: her people. We are (though we say it ourselves) welcoming, enthusiastic, polite and alot of fun - and that’s putting it mildly.
Come and see for yourselves...

Jardines del Rey
Dubbed ‘the Cuban keys,’ the tiny islands of Jardines del Rey [the King’s Gardens], strung off Cuba’s Atlantic coast, are immortalized in Ernest Hemingway’s novel, Islands in the Stream. Mangroves and everglades, flamingos and roseate spoonbills, sun-bleached sand and turquoise waters make this little corner the perfect retreat.
Linked to the mainland by a causeway, Cayo Coco is Cuba’s most popular beach destination after Varadero. The cay boasts 22km of white-sand beaches, the perfect backdrop for water sports such as windsurfing, sailing, snorkeling and fishing.
Much smaller, Cayo Guillermo is famous for its sand dunes, which are among the tallest in the Caribbean, its deep-sea fishing and its connection to Ernest Hemingway. Here, you can fish where Papa Hemingway fished, and see his boat docked at its namesake beach.
The keys are in the province of Ciego de Ávila, Cuba’s fruit bowl thanks to its rich red soil. The provincial capital of the same name is a friendly ‘city of porches’ and home to one of Cuba’s best municipal museums. Recommended activities include freshwater fishing at Laguna Redonda or Laguna de la Leche, Cuba’s largest natural lake; and excursions to the historic military route, La Trocha, and weekend the rodeo on Isla Turiguanó.
Villa Clara
Villa Clara is a land of beaches, tobacco fields and lakes brimming with fish. It is home to the Buenavista Biosphere Reserve, which contains protected ecosystems that include mangroves, coral reefs, active dune zones, keys and reproductive zones for aquatic birds. On its northern coast, the 48 km el pedraplén causeway connects Villa Clara to the Cayerías del Norte, a series of tropical offshore islets, where the popular resort destinations of Cayo las Brujas and Cayo Santa María are located.
In the capital city, Santa Clara, you’ll find fascinating and historically significant sites commemorating the exploits of revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara, among them the mausoleum containing Che Guevara’s remains, as well as several museums documenting his life.
To the west lies Remedios, a charming colonial town that hosts the famous Parrandas de Remedios, a festival featuring fireworks, floats and dancing in the streets each December.
Outdoor enthusiasts head south to Embalse Hanabanilla, one of Cuba’s largest lakes, noted for excellent bass fishing; and to the mighty Escambray Mountains beyond.
------------------------------------------
Pinar Del Rio
Not many regions in Cuba have the natural beauty of Pinar del Río. Blessed by nature, it treasures two of the six World Biosphere Reserves in the island. The charm of its flora and fauna is the main attraction of the province, so much so that it defines the characteristics of the tourism there: the land of the best tobacco in the world. Pinar del Río is a very interesting destination, for those who find in the contact with nature a good reason to travel.
