King Tom Waste Dumpsite - Freetown - Sierra Leone
One of two main waste dumpsites in Freetown, capital of Sierra Leone. King Tom is the oldest waste disposal site in Freetown and receives septic black water tanker discharges (faecal sludge - you see the red tanker emptying at the main gate ) as well as solid waste (garbage). Around 60 tonnes of solid waste are deposited on site daily, delivered by handcarts, motor trikes, tipper trucks and container trucks. While waste collection and disposal is mainly conducted by men and male youth groups, informal recovery of recyclable materials from the dumped waste is mainly being conducted by women and children. Informal housing is constantly encroaching on site. The green grassed areas visible along the one perimeter is a grave yard, extended in 2015 to accommodate the victims of the ebola outbreak. The urban agriculture visible throughout the area is being conducted on and in the waste mass, using the decomposed organic waste as the growing medium, the plants likely take up the heavy metals from batteries and other hazardous wastes which is transferred to the crop consumer. A landfill is a dumpsite when it has no operational management controls in place, a little bit of consistent daily planned management could drastically improve this site, but the local economy is such, that financing landfill management is not a high priority. Ultimately this is a consequence of our throwaway society and disregard (as a global society) for our natural resources.
