060: Beauty of Borrowdale (Seatoller, Grange and the Borrowdale Valley)
LAKE DISTRICT WALK IN THE BORROWDALE VALLEY FEATURING SEATOLLER, CASTLE CRAG AND GRANGE-IN-BORROWDALE
“Beauty of Borrowdale”
Filmed 3rd June 2016
Running time: 20 minutes
Whilst staying in the Lake District I decide to leave the car behind and catch the bus to Seatoller where my walk begins. Climbing up high I get wonderful views of Borrowdale before descending into the valley to follow a riverside path back towards Seatoller in time for a leisurely bus ride back to Keswick…..
Filmed in the Lake District in the county of Cumbria. Locations include Seatoller, Castle Crag, Grange, Longthwaite and the end of Honister Pass.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.
Any other names credited in this film, i.e. Bob Morgan and Martin Roy, are pseudonyms, which I used at the time of making this film. However, I no longer use these pseudonyms as I want viewers to be clear that my films are completely my own work.

This is a walk I've had on my mind for a little while now after recently finding out about the route. After a pretty overcast day, the evening began to brighten up, so I decided to make the most of it and head out with the camera. A fairly short but steep climb but certainly worth the effort to get the views both into Borrowdale Valley, and down towards Keswick and the surrounding fells.

The Bowder Stone, Borrowdale, Cumbria
One of Lakeland’s most famous features, this 2000 ton stone, some 30ft high and 50ft across, apparently rests in a state of delicate balance. It was not carried into the area by ice but is a local rock that toppled into its present position This happened after the glacier that once almost filled Borrowdale retreated and no longer buttressed the steep side of the valley. This resulted in a large rock fall. The precise age of the rock fall cannot be determined but it must be after the ice started to retreat some eighteen thousand years ago.
It had been the idea of the founders of the National Trust that gifts to the nation of places of beauty or of historic interest would form fit memorials to those who had passed away. The president of the National Trust, Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria, and sister of King Edward VII, wanted to make a gift in memory of the King, when he died in 1910. Grange Fell was purchased, which included the Bowder Stone, and a memorial stone to King Edward was placed on the fell. Eight years earlier Princess Louise had performed the opening ceremony at Brandlehow Wood, the first Lake District’s first aquisition.
The Bowder Stone is a very popular site for rock climbers, bouldering (climbing without ropes) is practised, often with mattresses placed below the climber as the more athletic attempt the overhang, as is the Bowder stone crag nearby.
The Bowder Stone is a short level walk from the National Trust car park on the Keswick to Borrowdale road, near Grange. The 78 Borrowdale bus from Keswick also stops near the start of the path. A ladder allows you to climb to the top of the Bowder Stone.
Filmed on my iPhone 6 on 12th February 2017.

Lake District - The Central Fells - Grange Fell - The Bowder Stone
This is our last walk of 2014. Here we tackle Grange Fell with Brund Fell known as the 'Wainwright' top and Kings How which is a 'Birkett'. As we descend we take a look at the Quayfoot quarry abseil point and 'The Bowder Stone'.
Over the past 8 years the Fat Boys have been helping a man achieve his dream of completing the 214 'Wainwrights' listed in his Pictorial Guides to the Lake District. Dave Galloway from Southend-on-Sea in Essex and now age 75 only just recovered from surgery following two bouts of Cancer. That coupled with other obstacles often put in his way, such as chronic cramps, blisters and awful crippling gout have not deterred him from making sure he makes the most of being given a second crack at life.
On this site we have documented in video every fell that Dave has conquered. The completion of his dream is near, watch it unfold on this YouTube site. Hope you enjoy this small part of his challenge.
Music is by 7and 5 with the tracks 'When roads become divided' and 'Revelations'

A days walk in Borrowdale
Pam and I walked for 6 hours in and around the valley, up hills, down paths & through little villiages. It was spring, but a rainy day. Many of the leaves on the trees were still pushing to grow. But being spring, it meant that there were little lambs bleeting everywhere - was soooo cute.

LDWA Three Rings of Shap 2015
The Three Rings of Shap Challenge Walk 2015 organised by the Cumbria section of the Long Distance Walkers Association (LDWA). Held on Saturday 13th June 2015.
Here's a link to my photos:
Based at Shap Memorial Hall, Shap, Cumbria, it consists of three separate walks of 18, 24 & 20 miles, each walk starting and finishing at the Memorial Hall with a total length of 62 miles (100kms). It is very popular with runners as well as walkers. In fact it is nearly only runners who finish the three rings.
From Cumbria LDWA: Each Ring starts and finishes at the Event HQ in Shap where there are full facilities with hot food and drinks available all day. We are hoping to provide showers again next year - albeit at the swimming club across the playing field! Please note that each Ring will only have ONE manned checkpoint at approximately half distance and will just provide cold drinks and simple food. Be prepared to carry your own supplies of food & drink if you want to supplement this provision.
RING 1 - MOSEDALE 18 miles (29Km), approx. 900 m. ascent.
Checkpoints - Branstree (478 099) unmanned self-clip
Truss Gap (515 132)
Travelling west from Shap this ring passes above the aptly named Wet Sleddale reservoir to reach remote Mosedale Cottage via quiet and secluded moorland. It then ascends two of Haweswater’s “Wainwrights”, Branstree and Selside Pike, offering superb views of High Street and Eastern Lakeland. Descending to the hidden valley of Swindale with its magnificent waterfalls and the Truss Gap checkpoint the route returns to Shap through the hamlets of Rosgill and Keld passing historic Shap Abbey on the way.
RING 2 - LYVENNET, LEITH & LOWTHER 24 miles (39Km), approx. 700m. ascent
Checkpoints - ‘The White Stuff’ Barn (573 252)
Road Junction (517 194) self-clip, drinks only
A fine low-level journey through farm and parkland visiting the quiet Westmorland villages of Reagill, Morland, Hackthorpe & Bampton Grange etc. and providing an intimate view of the three eponymous and little known rivers . Even on its own this walk is no pushover.
RING 3 – GREAT ASBY 20 MILES (32Km), approx. 750m. ascent.
Checkpoint - Field (668 117)
In complete contrast this ring follows Wainwright’s Coast-to-Coast route out of Shap for several miles before leaving it to explore the National Nature Reserve of Great Asby Scar in classic limestone country. It returns from the checkpoint near Great Asby, now on the Westmorland Way, passing through Crosby Ravensworth and Oddendale on the way back to Shap.
