Kirkenes Snowhotel - King Crab Winter Safari
Everyone is welcome for a fun and exciting stay in our amazing winter wonderland.
Kirkenes Snowhotel opened for the first time in 2006, and since then we have been giving our guests a wonderful experience in one of Norway’s most beautiful surroundings.
King Crabbing in Norway
Red king crab is one of the most coveted shellfish worldwide and one of the most expensive crabs available on the market. Why? Cuz they taste really really good.
Guests at the Kirkenes Snowhotel in Northern Norway have the rare opportunity to catch and eat fresh red king crab—no experience required. Just suit up, take a 15-minute ride on a snowmobile sledge and find yourself on an ice-covered fjord, approximately 8 kilometers away from the Russian border.
The crew shows you how to drill a hole with an ice auger and teaches techniques for pulling up the trap and, er, putting the little creatures to sleep. With the help of a seasoned guide, I also learn how to properly eat the darn things.
“Here we get it fresh, and it is very hard to get king crab fresh because officially, you can fish only from September to December,” said Lori Adou, a guide at the Kirkenes Snowhotel. “They fish as much as possible during those three months and most of it goes into cans or frozen. We have this special license for tourism. We can fish all year long as long as we fish it ourselves, cook it ourselves, serve it on spot. This is one of the only ways to get it fresh and you were here with me. It was 20 minutes ago, we killed it and now I’m about to put it in the pot. So more fresh than this is quite hard to get.”
And he is right. Each crab leg is succulent, rich and juicy. I can only compare the taste of the meat to lobster—except that this is much better, sweeter. Even though our meal is simple, flavored with not much more than salt and pepper, it is divine. In fact, I’ll go on record and say that this is one of the best dinners I’ve ever had.
Should you book a king crab excursion? Absolutely. It’s a hands-on educational experience that culminates in a feast for the ages, a gluttonous Roman-style banquet, messy and decadent at once.

Scandinavian Trip under a Singaporean Eye (King Crab Buffet // Northern Lights ) Part 3

In Part 1 we ended of at Stockholm, click the link to watch part:
In Part 2, we ended of at Tromso. Watch part 2 here:
Kirkenes
From Tromso, we took a Hurtigruten Voyage Cruise to Kirkenes. It was a 2 night cruise and arrival early next morning. On the cruise, we saw northern lights dancing in the sky. It was very beautiful. Once we reach Kirkenes, we head over to Krikenes Snow Hotel. we saw many nice ice sculpture in the hotel, pet some lovely dogs and saw Gabba the reindeer.
The next day we went for a King crab hunt and Snowmobile riding with Barrent Safari. It was a tour that i am looking forward to, because we get to eat unlimited amount of King Crab for the night. Hot, Steamy & Juicy King Crab is dat best!
We chartered a minibus to ferry us to Saariselka. And we crossed the boarder to Finland. It was a 3 hours bus ride. When we reach Saariselka, we rental a minivan and headed to our 1 night Airbnb stay.
Rovaniemi
Early next morning we head out to Rovaniemi. It was a 2 hours drive. We stop by Hesburger, a famous burger joint in Finland and had our breakfast there. After which, we visited the Santa Park. Did many activities in the park, like sit a magic train, see Santa Claus and even watch some aerobic elf performance.
A short tour of our awesome Airbnb at Finland and we head out to Santa Claus Village. At Santa Claus Village, we went to the main post office and mailed out some postcards, and got our passport stamped as we cross the arctic circle. We also did some tubing slides.
It was a great year end trip! In this trip, i tried many things for the first time. Like skiing, snowmobile and etc. It was a great experience. If i have the chance again, i will come back again!
Till next time!
