King Harry Ferry Chains
Filmed onboard the King Harry Ferry using a handheld Canon HV30 HD video and recorded onto Canon Professional tape. The King Harry Ferry Bridge is a vehicular chain ferry which crosses the Carrick Roads reach of the estuary of the River Fal in the English county of Cornwall. The ferry crosses between the parishes of Feock and Philleigh, roughly half way between the city of Truro, the lowest bridging point on the estuary, and the town of Falmouth, at the estuary's mouth. The ferry is owned and operated by the King Harry Steam Ferry Company Ltd. It moves in the water by pulling itself along on sunken chains. It is these chains which are the subject and focus of this short film. Abstract and painterly images are revealed using reduced film speed and close up shots. The ferry's engine and background noise provide the soundtrack. This film is the inspiration for a body of work which incorporates: Still Photography, Mixed Media Painting and Collage.
King Harry Ferry - Truro & Falmouth to St Mawes & The Roseland Peninsula
The crossing of the River Fal on The King Harry Ferry has been voted one of the ten most scenic ferry trips in the world by The Independent, alongside the Staten Island Ferry in New York and the Star Ferry in Hong Kong. The Feock terminal of the ferry is adjacent to the renowned Trelissick Gardens.
Established in 1888, it is an iconic part of Cornwall’s history. The King Harry Ferry connects St Mawes and the Roseland Peninsula with Truro and Falmouth by avoiding the alternative 27 mile route through Truro & Tresillian.
Each year the King Harry Ferry saves 5 million car miles, 1.7 million kg of CO2 and ¾ of a million litres of fuel. It carries 300,000 cars every single year.
A toll is charged for vehicular use of the ferry; a charitable donation is invited from pedestrians. Local people purchase concession tickets to keep the price low. If the ferry is not operating, the alternative is a 26-mile (42 km) detour via the city of Truro.

Episode 4: Exploring Cornwall’s Historic Coastline
See Cornish rivers from a local boat owner’s perspective as John visits many of the easily explorable rivers from the Tamar in the east on the Devon border, to Europe’s largest natural harbour in Falmouth at the mouth of the Rivers Penryn and Fal.
In this episode John shows us sights such as the Cornish farmlands seen from the Lynher estuary, a tributary of the Tamar. He reveals the many attractions Falmouth offers and reasons to explore beyond the picturesque village of Fowey and up in to the River Fowey itself. So many of Cornwall’s rivers are wide enough and deep enough at high tide to be easily explored. The River Helford’s estuary is a yachtsman’s dream, whilst in the upper reaches of the River Fal large commercial ships can often be found laid up by their owners.
Our final episode will reveal John’s favourite, secret spots along the Cornish coast...don't miss it!

St Dennis parish church
This video is of the outside of St Denys church at St Dennis, near St Columb Major, Cornwall, UK. The church was only built in 1982 but there has been a church here for over one thousand years. It was built in 1982 because the church which was there before burnt down and when it was re-built it was made to look as old as they could. The church was also said to be have been visited by King Arthur when he visited Castle-an-Dinas, just under the church. There is a 6th century cross in the churchyard which would have been here when he visited.
