- King John's Castle (Irish: Caisleán Luimnigh) is a 13th-century castle located on King's Island in Limerick, Ireland, next to the River Shannon. Although the site dates back to 922 when the Vikings lived on the Island, the castle itself was built on the orders of King John in 1200. Ghan House, Carlingford
About us
Built in 1727, Ghan House is a 4* AA rated, fully restored, family run Georgian House now in its 23rd year of continuous business with 17 years of awards and nominations (see bottom of page).
We are one of the oldest private houses of its type in Ireland, a tree length from Medieval Carlingford with 3 acres of walled mature gardens.
All of Carlingford's ancient buildings dating as far back at 1210; from King John's Castle, the Dominican Friary, the Mint and Taaffe's Castle are within a 2 minute walk from our front door. The Tholsel, Medieval Carlingford's old town gate, is just 30 metres from our walls.
We are in a wonderful location just one hour from both Dublin and Belfast and two of Ireland’s three World Heritage sites are within easy driving distance - just 45 minutes to Newgrange and a 120 minute drive to the stunning Giant's Causeway.
In addition the Titanic museum in Belfast and the Dublin Convention Centre are both just a one hour drive from our gates.
Ghan House is an oasis of Georgian ambience, gardens and fine dining with beautiful views from every room of Carlingford Lough, The Mourne mountains or Slieve Foy . We have 12 bedrooms in total ~ 4 in the Main House (1 single and 3 double) and 8 Garden bedrooms located 10 yards to the side of the Main House. The combination of old world charm allayed with modern requirements seamlessly dovetail together to give a thoroughly unique experience. We offer free wi-fi throughout the entire house and all of the bedrooms.
The individuality of the house lends itself to weddings, usually on an exclusive use basis, private dining for special birthdays & hen nights and corporate hospitality - all enjoying the comforts of a private bar, log fires & candlelight. We also have private parking, charging point for electric cars, a lockable shed for bicycles and 2 little homes in the stable for dogs (pets are not allowed in the house or bedrooms, sorry).
We have a small dedicated team - Orla & Sarahs 1 & 2 in the office, Olavi front of house, Dara serving breakfast and of course our multi-award winning kitchen team led by Head Chef, Stephane le Sourne. All of this is overseen by Paul Carroll. His mother Joyce Carroll is semi-retired ~ she attends to the herb & vegetable gardens, the flowers in the house, some cookery demonstrations and visits to approximately 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Carlingford Castle / County Louth / Ireland
is a coastal town and townland in northern County Louth, Ireland. It is situated between Carlingford Lough and Slieve Foy, sometimes known as Carlingford Mountain, It is located within the Cooley Peninsula. Carlingford was occupied approximately 800 years ago by Norman knight Hugh de Lacy after laying the foundation stone for a castle on a strategic outcrop of rock. A settlement sprang up close to this fortress.

Ages of Carlingford
The video, entitled “The Ages of Carlingford”, tells the story of Carlingford and Cooley - in words, pictures, and music - from the Ice Age and the first human settlement through the Viking and Norman invasions and on to the Age of Steam. Along the way we meet
Cuchulainn, Queen Maeve and the Great O'Neill and marvel at original drone footage - shot especially for the piece - clearly showing cultivation ridges still left behind on our uplands by the first farmers. The video, lasting approximately twenty-five minutes, is set to a stirring original sound track and concludes with a tribute to the heroic crew of Rescue 116.
“The Ages of Carlingford” is an entirely local and original work from a collective of local artists, storytellers and musicians. The script was written by journalist and local historian Seamus Murphy, who worked with Patrick Conway on obtaining drone images of historic sites, such as Lios an tSigeal, where the Brown Bull of Cooley was hidden from the men of Connacht.
Seamus; script is spoken by professional actor Aoibheann
McCann and musician John McIntyre. Around this is woven an original musical score composed by our own Zoe Conway. Local technology wunderkind Cormac McCann of then pulled the whole thing together: sourcing and overlaying original still and moving
imagery and layering this with the narration and Zoe's foot-tapping score.
The video and wider project are managed by backroom boys Gerry McAlinden, Kieran McCourt, Paraic McKevitt and Norman McMullan for Carlingford Lough Heritage Trust.
