Andy's National Trust Travel Blogs: King John Hunting Lodge, Axbridge, Somerset
There are 500+ places of interest in the UK under the National Trust banner and I will be attempting to visit as many as I can, reporting as I do all the important stuff relative to accessibility. In this episode I go to a small town near Cheddar called Axbridge where I had a look around the King John Hunting Lodge.
This Tudor wood framed building was used by wool traders and is around 550 years old.

The Square at Axbridge - Somerset
In the center of the small town of Axbridge is the Medieval Square, famed for it's half timbered buildings and the wonderful King John's Hunting Lodge - actually a Tudor era building. Axbridge is a very historical place with a 13th century church.
This is just a very quick video of the square while we took a break.
Warning, just for fun I slipped a few bits in!

Axbridge, St John The Baptist, Part 8, March 2011.wmv
A Magnificent and majestic church in a very old and medieval village of Axbridge where the King John Hunting Lodge can be seen--a free museum open from Easter. This church and its village is steeped in history and is nestled on the edge of the Mendip hills in Somerset and very near to the village of Cheddar and its Gorge. The church really has a splendid ceiling.

Somerset 2013 - Axbridge -
Axbridge in Somerset, Süd-West England.

Andy's National Trust Travel Blogs: Greys Court, near Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire
There are 500+ places of interest in the UK under the National Trust banner and I will be attempting to visit as many as I can, reporting as I do all the important stuff relative to accessibility.
In this episode I visit GREYS COURT, a Tudor house and garden near Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire.
It was a visit of mixed success, and despite a map I failed to find the garden and had to accept a wheel-chair for the house due to a ban on scooters following a crash into a valuable table by a poor driver.
It was a lovely day, despite the scooter breaking down while going up a grassy slope.

There are 500+ places of interest in the UK under the National Trust banner and I will be attempting to visit as many as I can, reporting as I do all the important stuff relative to accessibility.
Snowshill Manor is in the cotswolds, and from the start mobility was challenged. Because this was late in the day, there were no disabled bays. Then I got stuck in the gravel. I discovered there was no ramps and access to the house limited.

Cheddar (1916)
Pure tranquillity in rural Somerset, a world away from the war raging on the continent.
Breathtaking views of the famous Gorge transport viewers of this mid-WWI travelogue to a rural idyll apparently untouched by the anguish of war. Intrepid visitors ascend the 275 steps of Jacob's Ladder before clambering up the lookout tower to appreciate the view towards Glastonbury Tor. For the less adventurous, the film also takes in the fine medieval stone cross which marks Cheddar's marketplace, and a gentle stroll along the bottom of the ravine.
The intertitles claim the lookout tower was used to send signals in times of national danger. As you might expect in this corner of Somerset, though, there is a more colourful explanation. Exploration of the Gorge began in the mid-19th century, with tourists keen to see the newly opened caves. Roland Pavey, a mill owner and local character who built his own show cave to capitalise on this curiosity, put up the original wooden lookout as late as 1900, naming it the 'Mystic Tower'. The current iron replica continues to cater to tourists, rather than defend against invading hordes.

Andy's National Trust Travel Blogs: Clouds Hill, home of Lawrence of Arabia
There are 500+ places of interest in the UK under the National Trust banner and I will be attempting to visit as many as I can, reporting as I do all the important stuff relative to accessibility.
Clouds Hill is an isolated cottage near Wareham in the county of Dorset in South West England. It is the former home of T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) and is now run as a writer's home museum by the National Trust. The site is in the parish of Turners Puddle in Purbeck District.
The small building has colourwashed brick walls and a tiled roof. It was probably built as forester's cottage in the early 19th century. The lintel over the door now bears a Greek inscription οὐ φροντὶς (Why Worry). It is now a Grade II* listed building as Clouds Hill (Lawrence of Arabia's Cottage); it was upgraded from Grade II in 2015.

Andy's National Trust Travel Blogs: Morwenstow, drift wood cabin, Cornwall
There are 500+ places of interest in the UK under the National Trust banner and I will be attempting to visit as many as I can, reporting as I do all the important stuff relative to accessibility.
This driftwood cabin overlooks the cliff top in North Cornwall, however, I didn't get to see it because of a locked gate. It was made for a parson named Hawker, and was his quiet retreat with stunning views.
Robert Stephen Hawker (3 December 1803 – 15 August 1875) was an Anglican priest, poet, antiquarian of Cornwall and reputed eccentric. He is best known as the writer of The Song of the Western Men with its chorus line of And shall Trelawny die? / Here's twenty thousand Cornish men / will know the reason why!, which he published anonymously in 1825. His name became known after Charles Dickens acknowledged his authorship of The Song of the Western Men in the serial magazine Household Words.
He was an eccentric man, known for dressing up as a mermaid and excommunicating his cat for mousing on a sunday!

There are 500+ places of interest in the UK under the National Trust banner and I will be attempting to visit as many as I can, reporting as I do all the important stuff relative to accessibility.
In this episode I go to Sandham Memorial Chapel, which is in the village of Burghclere, Hampshire, England. It is a grade I listed 1920s decorated chapel, designed by Lionel Godfrey Pearson. The chapel was built to accommodate a series of paintings by the English artist Stanley Spencer.
It was commissioned by Mary and Louis Behrend as a memorial to Mary's brother, Lieutenant Henry Willoughby Sandham who died at the end of the First World War.
The chapel is surrounded by lawns and orchards, with views of Watership Down.
