EMPOWERMENT ALBANIA DAY TWO VLOG
EMPOWERMENT ALBANIA
DAY TWO VLOG
For day two we split into two groups. One group visited the One Nation maddressa, and others in and around Elbasan, whilst the second group travelled towards the borders of Greece and Macedonia.
We visited different madressas and met local imaams and students, which gave us an insight into the islamic education system in Albanian and the level its currently at.
It made us realise how we take for granted the level of education available to us back home, and how students of every generation here are striving to seek knowledge.

Thessalonike
Thessaloniki (Greek: ΘΕΣΣΑΛΟΝΙΚΗ), is the second-largest city in Greece and the capital of the region of Central Macedonia. The city was founded around 315 BC by the Greek King Cassander of Macedon, on or near the site of the ancient Greek town of Therma and 26 other local villages. Etymology of the name ... Ancient Greek inscription reading To Queen Thessalonice, (Daughter) of Philip. All variations of the city's name derive from the original (and current) appellation in Greek: Θεσσαλονίκη, literally translating to Thessalian Victory and in origin the name of a Greek princess, Thessalonike of Macedon, who was named so because she was born on the day of the Macedonian victory at the Battle of Crocus Field. He named it after his wife Thessalonike, a half-sister of Alexander the Great and Greek princess of Macedon as daughter of Philip II. Under the Greek kingdom of Macedon the city retained its own autonomy and parliament and evolved to become the most important city in Macedon. During the Ottoman period, The alternative name of the city was Selanik by Turks. Selanik was the capital of the Selanik sanjak within the Rumeli Eyaleti (Balkans) until 1826, and subsequently the capital of Selanik Vilayeti(between 1826 and 1864 Selanik Eyaleti). [This consisted of the sanjaks of Selanik, Serres and Drama between 1826 and 1912. The Vilayet of Salonica had a population of 373,227 Greeks - 177,317 Bulgarians - 62,290 Jewish - 447,780 Muslims and 11,604 Other, before 1912. Thessaloniki was liberated from Turkish dominion in 1912 (26 October) and a new age began for the city. Saint Dimitrios was given to the pilgrims on the 26th October, which is nameday of the Saint. This is a significant day in Thessaloniki and Saint Dimitrios is the patron Saint of the city.

SUMMARY
=======
Albania ( (listen), a(w)l-BAY-nee-ə; Albanian: Shqipëri/Shqipëria; Gheg Albanian: Shqipni/Shqipnia, Shqypni/Shqypnia), officially the People's Socialist Republic of Albania (Albanian: Republika Popullore Socialiste e Shqipërisë), was a Marxist-Leninist government that ruled Albania from 1946 to 1992. From 1944 to 1946, it was known as the Democratic Government of Albania and from 1946 to 1976 as the People's Republic of Albania.
Throughout this period, the country had a reputation for its Marxist-Leninist style of state administration influenced by Enver Hoxha and the Party of Labour of Albania and for policies stressing national unity and self-reliance. Travel and visa restrictions made Albania one of the most difficult countries to visit or to travel from. In 1967, it declared itself the world's first atheist state. But after the end of its communist regime in 1991, the practice of religion slowly increased. It was the only Warsaw Pact member to formally withdraw from the alliance before 1990, an action occasioned by the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. The first multi-party elections in Socialist Albania took place on 31 March 1991 – the Communists gained a majority in an interim government and the first parliamentary elections were held on 22 March 1992. The People's Socialist Republic was officially dissolved on 28 November 1998 upon the adoption of the new Constitution of Albania.
