Britain's 10 most Scenic Rail Journeys
Please watch: The abandoned Eurostar
--~--
A generation ago, Britain's railways were almost consigned to history when Dr Beeching's cuts closed thousands of stations and lines across the country. But some gems survived, and now rail travel grows more popular by the day.
The Real Mary Kings Close Private Tour 2013
Mary King's Close is an old Edinburgh close under buildings in the Old Town area of Edinburgh, Scotland. It took its name from one Mary King, daughter of advocate Alexander King, who in the 17th century had owned several properties within the close. The close was partially demolished and buried under the Royal Exchange, and later being closed to the public for many years, the complex became shrouded in myths and urban legends; tales of ghosts and murders, and myths of plague victims being walled up and left to die abounded
However, new research and archaeological evidence has revealed that the close actually consists of a number of closes which were originally narrow streets with tenement houses on either side, stretching up to seven stories high. Mary King's Close is now a commercial tourist attraction

How to See the Hogwarts Express, aka Jacobite Train, cross the Glenfinnan Viaduct:
Step 1 – Reference this Google Maps walking route
(Note: there is free parking 200 meters NW of the Glenfinnan Monument Parking lot, where you turn right on A830, but you’ll need to get there early to get a space):
Step 2 – Check the dates & times the Jacobite train runs:
Step 3 – Plan ahead and arrive early!
The train passes the viaduct approximately 30 minutes after departing from Fort William station. The train will pass around 10:45am if departing from Fort William at 10:15am and pass around 3:10pm if leaving Fort William at 2:40pm. The walk from the parking lot will take you 15 to 20 minutes.
Step 4 – Find your favorite spot to view the train
When the train departs Fort William for Mallaig, it will be heading West. We recommend finding a spot on the far left (West) and South of the viaduct to get the best views. You’ll want to give yourself 15 minutes to find your favorite spot before the train arrives.
Step 5 – Capture the moment with photos and videos!
Final advice, plan to arrive at least one hour before the train passes the viaduct to give you plenty of time to secure a parking space, walk to the viaduct and locate your favorite position to watch the train.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once regarded as the favourite hunting grounds for the Lords and Knights of Edinburgh Castle, today, Currie is a leafy village within a short distance of the Pentland Hills. There are many reasons why Currie is the perfect place to call home, from the easy commute to Scotland’s stunning capital city to its scenic surroundings - we’ve compiled a list of the top five things you need to know about this location.
You’re surrounded by impressive landscapes
The Pentland Hills Regional Park is a living, working landscape that offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. Sculpted by glaciers and water, then shaped by people over thousands of years, the Pentland Hills are a special place in Midlothian. With around 10,000 hectares of countryside and over 100 km of waymarked paths, the Regional Park is a perfect place to be active with activities including walking, cycling and even horse riding. There are also a variety of local walking groups, perfect if you’re new to the area and looking to make friends.
The best cup of coffee and breakfast roll is only five minutes away
It’s important to know where your nearest breakfast spot is and The Lea in Currie is only five minutes away from Molly’s. Perfectly positioned as a fuelling station near the Water of Leith walkway, Molly’s serves up delicious, freshly cooked meals and the most impressive cakes.
Pandas are your neighbours!
For a fun day out with the kids, Edinburgh Zoo is only four miles away. The largest and most exciting wildlife attraction in Scotland, in just one day you can meet over 1000 animals, including the UK’s only pandas and koalas. There are also a wide range of unforgettable experiences, from a free Hilltop Safari ride to keeper workshops as well as play areas, restaurants and picnic areas.
You can explore a hidden natural asset
The Water of Leith is fully maintained by volunteers, making it one of the most beautiful rivers in the country and a haven for wildlife. Flowing for 24 miles from its source in the Pentland Hills, the river winds its way through the heart of the capital to the Firth of Forth. The river is home to a wide diversity of plants and animals from wild garlic and orchids to brown trout, heron, kingfisher and otter – it’s also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 80 species of bird.
It’s home to one of Scotland’s top golf resorts
Dalmahoy Golf Club boasts a beautiful inland golf course, which has hosted many important Scottish amateur and professional events since 1927. Dalmahoy's East and West courses are representations of everything that is good about Scottish golf as they provide a strong test to all abilities and are as enjoyable as any top championship course you will find. The course offers stunning views across the region, where you can see as far as the Forth Bridges and new Queensferry Crossing as well as over to Edinburgh Castle.
Underground City, Edinburgh, Scotland
This was an interesting walk through the underground city in Edinburgh. Sadly my video battery died on me while I was down there, but I still got a bit. This was done about two hours before leaving the great land of Alba. There are other tours that take one to different parts of the underground and hope to be able to see them some day too.

Scotland
Scotland is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. Occupying the northern third of the island of Great Britain, it shares a border with England to the south and is bounded by the North Sea to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west, and the North Channel and Irish Sea to the southwest. In addition to the mainland, Scotland consists of over 790 islands including the Northern Isles and the Hebrides.
Edinburgh, the country's capital and second largest city, is one of Europe's largest financial centres. Edinburgh was the hub of the Scottish Enlightenment of the 18th century, which transformed Scotland into one of the commercial, intellectual and industrial powerhouses of Europe. Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, was once one of the world's leading industrial cities and now lies at the centre of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. Scottish waters consist of a large sector of the North Atlantic and the North Sea, containing the largest oil reserves in the European Union. This has given Aberdeen, the third largest city in Scotland, the title of Europe's oil capital.
The Kingdom of Scotland was an independent sovereign state before 1 May 1707 when it entered into a political union with the Kingdom of England to create the united Kingdom of Great Britain.[14][15] This union resulted from the Treaty of Union agreed in 1706 and enacted by the twin Acts of Union passed by the Parliaments of both countries, despite widespread protest across Scotland.[16][17] Scotland's legal system continues to be separate from those of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland and Scotland still constitutes a distinct jurisdiction in public and in private law.[18]
The continued existence of legal, educational and religious institutions distinct from those in the remainder of the UK have all contributed to the continuation of Scottish culture and national identity since the Union.[19] Although Scotland is no longer a separate sovereign state, issues surrounding devolution and independence continue to be debated. After the creation of the devolved Scottish Parliament in 1999, the first ever pro-independence Scottish Government was elected in 2007 when the Scottish National Party formed a minority administration.
