HIGHLY ACCLAIMED INTERNATIONAL TUTANKHAMUN EXHIBITION OPENS AT GRANDWEST
Following its recent success to critical acclaim in Johannesburg, the international exhibition ‘TUTANKHAMUN – HIS TOMB AND HIS TREASURES’ opened at GrandWest and runs throughout the winter school holidays and beyond. This captivating exhibition gives patrons the unique opportunity to experience the treasures of the tomb at their moment of discovery. This amazing adventure begins with a multimedia presentation illustrating the fascinating story behind the exploration and excavation by British archaeologist, Howard Carter, the history of Tutankhamun, and the culture of ancient Egypt.
Seen by over five million people worldwide and by over 70,000 visitors in Johannesburg, the exhibition has faithfully reconstructed the tomb of Tutankhamun to scale. There are over 1,000 exquisitely reconstructed burial treasures produced by the finest Egyptian craftsmen under scientific supervision. These exact replicas coupled with state-of-the art technology and video material provide a vivid illustration of the culture and spiritual world of the ancient Egyptians. Visitors will also discover what these magnificent historical finds reveal about the religion, deities, dynasties, and mysterious hieroglyphics of the empire on the Nile.
The fragile and valuable original artefacts cannot be transported, so this exhibition offers visitors a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view the (perfectly replicated) antiquities from King Tut’s tomb - all under one roof. Brought to South Africa through a partnership with producer SC Exhibitions (Germany), Great World Exhibitions and GrandWest, the exhibition brings the historic moment and the story of the burial treasure’s discovery to life in a unique way.
Located in the new “SunExhibits” centre at GrandWest, previously known as the “Magic Castle”, exhibition goers are guided through the exploration “journey” with the help of an audio guide (included in the ticket price) that makes the fascinating experience more enjoyable and fulfilling. There is even a special children’s audio guide to maximise their experience too.

Egyptian Gates of the Underworld
Please watch: Are the Celtic Fairies Fallen Angels
--~--
Demonic Gate Deities of the Egyptian Underworld, a documentary describing the Gates of the Underworld and the Demonic entities guarding each Gate. The Egyptians believed that in the netherworld, the Duat, there were various gates, doors and pylons crossed every night by the solar boat (Atet) of the sun-god Ra and by the souls directed to the world of the dead.
Ancient funerary texts provide many different descriptions of the afterlife gates, every gate was guarded by a minor god who allowed access only to the souls capable of pronouncing the secret name of the god himself, as a sort of password. The walls of many Pharaonic tombs in the Valley of the Kings are decorated with the texts of the Book of Gates, which describes the twelve gates or pylons of the underworld. It is worth noting that the Egyptians consider mythology as history...not fiction...”foor for thought”.

Here one can see all the nested shrines which were in the burial chamber. Then one sees the coffins nested in the stone sarcophagi, and the coffin made from pure gold with the mummy. And then, (Egyptologist Howard) Carter finally discovered the wonderful golden mask which we exhibit separately here. Everything is a replica, but of a quality that even astounds great Egyptologists.

These golden shrines, the golden coffins and the mask - that's the centre piece. It is also most important for the pharaoh, for his life in the afterlife. Everything else are objects which either have symbolic relevance or were in the life of the pharaoh, in the palace, such as chairs or the golden throne.

We cannot stage the trove like Howard Carter discovered it in 1922, and build the chambers like the discoverers saw it without destroying the originals. We would never get them, and every restorer would have a panic attack if one said that we restage the discovery with originals. This only works with replicas.

LEAD IN:
Replicas of the tomb and treasures of the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun are displayed in all their golden glory at an exhibition in Berlin.
The exhibition, which opens to the public on 9 March 2013, shows the beauty and detail of the kings iconic death masks, shrines, sarcophagi and statues in meticulously reconstructed detail.
STORYLINE:
In 1922, the British archaeologist Howard Carter discovered the burial chambers of the ancient Egyptian king Tutankhamun and its associated tombs and treasures.
The discovery caused a worldwide sensation.
When Carter took his first look into the burial chamber of Pharaoh Tutankhamun on 26 November 1922, he is said to have said, I see wonderful things.
It is this statement which has inspired the designers and creators of the travelling exhibition on show in Berlin's 'Arena' exhibition space.
By reconstructing the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun the exhibition designers say they hope to give visitors an insight into the opulence of the offerings that were supposed to service the king on his journey into the afterlife.
Exhibition designer Rainer Verbizh says he wants visitors to relive the story of Carter's discovery.
People have been fascinated by Tutankhamun and his treasures since the burial chamber was discovered.
More than one-thousand replicas of the most important artefacts from the tomb have been reconstructed by Egyptian craftsmen using traditional techniques.
Egyptologist Wolfgang Wettengel is the scientific consultant to the exhibition.
