Ross-on-Wye to Symonds Yat by River
Scenes from a Wye Valley boat journey, from Ross-on-Wye to Symonds Yat shot for
The journey of approximately 15 miles took 7 hours as water levels were very low following a very dry month of June. I think I walked in the water, towing the moat almost as much distance as I was able to ride in it.
Although shot from a boat in this instance for film kit carrying convenience, using mostly stop motion stills photography, this journey is a popular canoe route.

Symonds Yat is a village in the Wye Valley and a popular tourist destination, straddling the River Wye and on the borders of the English counties of Herefordshire and Gloucestershire. It is within a few miles of Monmouthshire and the Welsh border. The name is said to come from Robert Symonds, a 17th-century sheriff of Herefordshire, and yat, an old word for a gate or pass.
The ferry at Symonds Yat has always played a huge part in the life here. In 1800 there were 25 hand ferries between Ross and Chepstow just like those outside Ye Old Ferrie Inn and the Saracen's Head today. They were introduced in Roman times to link the forts of the Doward and the Yat and have served military, civilian, tourist and horse traffic over the years.
Symonds Yat originally encompassed all the lands southerly of Huntsham curve on both sides of Symonds Yat Rock and would have included the area around Coldwell Rocks. The name Symonds Yat used to refer to quite a large area of land and the hamlet of Symonds Yat (East), consisting of the Saracen's Head Inn, the Fish House, Lockkeepers Cottage and one or two cottages on the hillside, was specifically called New Weir and is seen on maps as such up until 1955.
Symonds Yat (East) is on the eastern side of the river, very close to the Gloucestershire border. It has three hotels, WyeDean Canoe and Activity Centre and the Saracens Head Inn (with accommodation). A steep footpath leads from the village up to Symonds Yat Rock. Another footpath and a cycleway, constructed on a former railway line, runs on the eastern bank to Monmouth.
Symonds Yat (West) is on the western side of the river. It has a large caravan and camping site (Sterretts Caravan Site), and a small amusement park owned by Kimberly Danter (daughter of Henry Danter and family member of the famous UK showmen the Danter Family). Symonds Yat (West) amusement park used to have a small funfair which was removed in 2010 due to lack of service.
( Symonds Yat - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Symonds Yat . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Symonds Yat - UK

Symonds Yat and Yat Rock
A newly edited and narrated version for 2010 of the Symonds Yat and Yat Rock tourism and information film I shot for
Shot during between March and October 2009, the film covers fishing on the Wye at Symonds Yat East, the ancient rope ferry to Symonds Yat West, canoeing and river cruises. The video, slow motion and time lapse sequences of the village and Yat Rock finish with a time lapse sequence of the Milky Way rising above Yat Rock.
During the wide angle filming of the Milky Way scenes towards the end of the film, the International Space Station made an overhead pass and many meteors and passenger aircraft flew overhead.
The video was shot using a Sony SR1 1280 HD camera and both Nikon D90 and D100 cameras. Editing was achieved in Sony Vegas with some resizing of frames in Adobe Photoshop.

The view from my swim. River Wye
Lovely Summer's day.The great River Wye forms a large part of the border between England and south Wales. Its fame as a productive salmon fishery has traditionally overshadowed its enormous potential for coarse species but this is gradually being discovered by those in the know. The Newport AA has three miles of excellent coarse water at Symonds Yat half on either bank open to visiting anglers. The river at this point is deep and strong ideal conditions for barbel which are prolific throughout the stretch. Large catches have recently been recorded with many individuals into double figures. Nearly every native species (including carp) is present to some degree large and small the latter providing a steady menu for that ultimate predator the pike present in great numbers. Large specimens are regularly landed here. High water can make much of the Wye nearly unfishable there are few proper pools in the lower reaches of this powerful river and long stretches resemble a large fast-moving canal so pick low water conditions if you have a choice. Close season rules apply so winter-time is recommended. Symonds Yat is a popular tourist destination so if you’d rather avoid late season visitors try just above St Dubricius’ Church. The high banks are not easy in places but there are ample convenient pitches. This venue is subject to the coarse fish close season.
