RED CENTRE OF AUSTRALIA! (ULURU NP, KINGS CANYON, WEST MACDONNEL RANGES) #25
This week we will continue our road trip through the red centre of Australia! We leave Uluru National Park and drive towards the Kings Canyon and the West MacDonnell Ranges. This part of Australia is an absolutely gem!

Australia's Red Centre: Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), Kings Canyon and Surrounds
Uluru is an incredibly spiritual place and I have no doubt that you will feel the awesome high vibrations if you decide to visit.
SOME of the things you may decide to do when you're there:
- Sunrise and sunset tours
- Field of lights (amazing!)
- Sounds of Silence Dinner
- Camel ride tour
- Walking, driving or Segwaying around Uluru. The actual circumference is close to 11kms. We chose a segway tour around it, stopping at pertinent places on the journey, which was incredibly fun.
- Visit Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) and Walpa Gorge
- Kings Canyon Rim walk.
- Curtin Springs
Tips
- Staying at any of the accommodation will do nicely. It gets extremely hot but all accommodation (except tents) have air conditioning. The only difference will be the more you pay, the more updated you can expect your room to be. (ALL accommodation is owned by the Voyager company.)
- You will need a fly/mosquito hat/covering! You can buy them there or bring one with you. Don't go anywhere without it.
- You must carry at least 2 litres of water for all tours. They won't let you go on the tour if you don't.
- Some walks close by 9am due to the heat, so be sure to be early.
- Be prepared for it to be HOT!
- Getting up early and going to bed late is part of the Red Centre culture. You can always have a nanna nap in the middle of the day (and often, you will need this).
Curtin Springs: A little history...
A highlight of this trip for me: visiting Curtin Springs, owned by a local living legend. Peter Severin, 92 year old owner of Curtin Springs Station for over 60 years (and still going strong), is one ingenuitive white fella who has not only survived living in the harsh Central Australian environment but has also created thriving businesses, which included much diversification.
Cattle farming (first exploit - crazy yet still profitable and winning awards!), mustering and catching feral animals, the only fuel stop and pub for many, many miles, groceries, souvenir store and café (there since the '50s), campgrounds and accommodation, abattoir and, more recently, paper making (using local vegetation) and jewellery – for starters.
Because for quite some time he had the only truck around, he picked up much other work such as building the original airstrip at Ayers Rock and many of the local roads.
My favourite story was that in 1964 Peter was commissioned to install a waist-high guide chain on Ayers Rock (Uluru) to assist climbers. When asked why he started the chain 30 metres up the rock and had it set at a height of approx. 40 cm from the ground, he replied something similar to this:
1. If you can’t get 30m up the rock yourself (to reach the start of the chain) you shouldn’t be attempting it anyway; and
2. They never said whose “waist-height”. (He is quite a short man so it definitely was not his.)
I so would liked to have met him but we were at his pub about an hour too early for his regular 5pm visit, where he sits every day and drinks his favourite beer, Fosters. (BTW, I don't know any other Aussie who likes Fosters!) Everyone who knows him says he is definitely quite the character.
Last month (Oct 2019), it became illegal to climb ULURU due to the fact the it is a sacred site and climbing it is seen as disrespectful.

Day 1 : Alice Springs to Uluru
It’s an early rise if you are joining us in Alice Springs where you will make the journey to Ayers Rock where we will meet our fellow travellers joining us there. This afternoon embark on an interpretive base walk of Uluru. Those choosing to climb will have the opportunity to do so, weather permitting. (Note: Uluru is a sacred site and the Anangu people ask visitors to respect their law and do not climb it). The Cultural Centre is impressive and well worth a visit before watching the ever changing colours of Uluru at sunset. After dinner, some stories and stargazing, it’s time for a good night’s rest at our private campsite before another active day tomorrow. *Lunch on Day 1 is only included for passengers beginning their tour in Alice Springs. Passengers starting in Ayers Rock will need to have eaten prior to pick up.
Meal(s) included : Lunch, Dinner
Day 2 : Uluru to Kings Creek Station via Kata Tjuta
Your guide will wake you bright and early to experience a mesmerising Uluru sunrise, early mornings being such a magical time in the desert. Then it’s a short drive to Kata Tjuta (the Olgas), an Aboriginal word for “many heads”, to explore its domes of which there are 36 in total. Pull on your hiking boots and take the Valley of the Winds walk through creek beds, domes and beautiful wilderness. After lunch, it’s farewell to Uluru – Kata Tjuta National Park as we travel to Kings Creek Station to spend the night at our private camp.
Meal(s) included : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3 : Kings Creek Station to Alice Springs via Kings Canyon
This morning we enter the Watarrka (Kings Canyon) National Park, home of a mighty chasm with sheer red rock faces which soar over 100 metres above lush palm forests. The rim of Kings Canyon is a 6km round trip walk and you will visit the Amphitheatre, Lost City and tranquil Garden of Eden. After lunch, we make our way towards the iconic outback town of Alice Springs, arriving in the early evening. This town has a vast pioneering history and will feel like the big smoke after 2 and a half days in the ‘Bush’. You won’t need your swag tonight, as your hostel accommodation is included (dormitory/twin or double room) along with dinner for our last night together. Later, you’ll have the chance to wash your dusty clothes before experiencing the nightlife of this charming Outback town.
Meal(s) included : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4 : Alice Springs to Uluru
Today we have another early start. Following breakfast we leave Alice Springs and begin our journey to Ayers Rock. With a short stop along the way we will get you and your baggage to Ayers Rock Airport or resort before saying farewell to this magical destination.
Meal(s) included : Breakfast
Kings Canyon, Alice Springs, MacDonnell Ranges | FREE CAMPING the Red Centre
Kings Canyon - Alice Springs - West MacDonnell Rangers
We stay in some great free camps.
Salt Creek - 100km from Kings Canyon.
Agnes Creek - 80km South of the NT boarder.
You can save yourself heaps of money free camping but that’s not the only reason why we love it. Most of the time you can’t have a camp fire in a caravan / holiday park and we hate having other camper just metres away (who can be noisy). We would rather be in a secluded spot with no one else around or very few.

Exploring Kings Canyon | Australia's Red Centre
In this episode, I highlight my walk of Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park in Australia's Northern Territory. Kings Canyon is an awesome 6 kilometer (3.7 miles) walking track...I was fortunate to have good company with two travelers I met at a hostel in Alice Springs. This was a spectacular day hike with lot's of diversity. As mentioned in the video, do exercise caution when you are near the edge of the canyon. Also, it might be wise to do this walk as early as possible as it can get quite hot at high noon. On days when the temperature forecast is 36 Celsius (96 Fahrenheit) or above, you must start the Rim Walk before 9am.

Kings Canyon and Uluru - Ep.25
THE BIG 3: Kings Canyon, Uluru & The Olgas
Finally made it to Kings Canyon and all we can say is wow! ???????? We did the popular rim walk which took us approx 4hours. The hardest part was at the climb at the beginning, it's nicknamed 'heartbreak hill' or heart-attack hill, as it's quite a steep ascent.
Once you get up the top, you can explore the rest of the canyon at a leisurely pace. ????????????????♀️
After completing the walk, we had a quick lunch, then it was full steam to ULURU! ????
We headed straight to the popular free camp to set up. [note this camp was still open when we visited, it has since been closed down unfortunately ????]. We stayed for 2 nights and just purely soaked in the magnificent views we had.
We decided to head into the resort for a few days while we properly explored the place. At our time of visit, there was alot of rainfall ???? and storms about. We had sunshine for 2/5 days whilst we were at the resort.
When the sun ☀️ did shine, we shot out to the Olgas for a look. That place was magical. Another great hike, taking us in and around the Olgas. The following day was also sunshine, so we strapped the bikes ????on the nav and headed in to see Uluru up close.
It was a surreal moment for us, actually seeing Uluru in person, with our own eyes. A must see place for all. We'd worked up a sweat and an appetite so headed back to camp to relax before our evening activities.
We both wanted to see the 'field of light' ????exhibition and decided to make it memorable by arriving on the back of a camel! Diesel was the name of our camel ???? giving us a lift to the exhibition & he made sure we arrived safely. Our package included champagne on arrival, then we were escorted to a viewing area, to wait for it to get dark. Once it was dark enough, the switch was flicked and the field of light became alive. ????

Red-Centre-Uluru--Kata-Tjuta--Kings-Canyon-Palm-Valley-4x4-Australia-Dec-2011.mp4
As an ex-pat I have lived and worked in Australia for a number of years. It took a visit from a friend of mine to get me out to Uluru, Kings Canyon, Palm Valley, and Kata Tjuta.
This is stunning. All photos are original and were taken in Dec 2011 with a Canon 50D (10-22m Ultrawide Lense). What you see is what the camera saw.
The challenge here which I have never encountered was to chose which of the 1200 photographs to include. Brief video clips created on Samsung Galaxy S2 (phone).
14-16 Megapixel versions of photographs available, just send me an e-mail for the link.
Cheers.

Episode 8: Driving Red Centre Way & Camping at Kings Canyon
On Day 6 we find ourselves on some proper dirt! Red Centre Way is a road that runs a few 100kms through some of the most picturesque parts of the country. We get some mountain twisties followed by a lot of corrugations and dips in the road, the Volvo bottomed out approximately 900 times. Later in the video we find a campsite in a place we cannot find again on the map! Choplux does his duty in collecting more firewood.
