KINGS LANDING | Florida Natural Spring's At Rock Springs Run | What To Do In Orlando
If you're near Orlando, or in Florida period, & you are looking for something to do outdoors... look no further, King's Landing should be on your list... and so MANY MORE NATURAL SPRINGS! Just outside of Orlando Florida, there are some INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL natural springs that are a mist see and do! We literally submerged ourselves into the everglades, and we were only 24 miles outside of Downtown Orlando! And don't worry, if you forget something, they have a cool little shop to have you covered!

⬇ OUR GEAR WE TOOK FOR THE DAY ⬇
Here's the items that we packed for our day trip:
• SPF 50 - Loved the smell, does NOT give you that 'burning' sensation, water resistant up to 80 minutes, and most importantly, FRIENDLY TO ALL THE CRITTERS AND WATER!
• BUG SPRAY - I cannot repeat how much of a life saver this will be.... let me remind you, you are out in the MIDDLE of the everglades!
• Water proof camera ( GoPro Hero 7)
- 4k, amazing shots in and out of water....we literally never leave anywhere without this beauty, and of course our fixtures for it,
An excellent alternative, if you want to save your pennies, we also brought a water proof phone case, this thing is ALWAYS used by our son, Blake!
• Take a backpack with some snacks and towels! Time flies when you are exploring these beautiful springs, and hunger stikes quick... and not to mention, paddeling is a good workout, so lots of energy is being used lol. Especially when you are paddeling AGAINST the current!
• SPF Chapstick...need I say more??
• Snorkel Masks - Even though we never swam, our intention was originally to go to Kelly Springs, but it was shut down, so the canoe was the next best thing. This one is small enough to fit my small head and big enough to fit our sons large head lol
• Water flippers- I (Ashley) wear a size 7.5, and ended up ordering a size small/medium, and they fit all three of us (the hubbs and kiddo are a size 10)
* And we brought water socks for when we got out into the water (just for a little protection on the feets). So I read in the reviews that these particular water socks run a little small, so I ordered a size 8 (Black), and they are definetly snug, but they still fit my feet. If I were to buy these again, I would buy a full size bigger (8.5 or 9).
• SPF Shirts- We brought them just in case, but the sun wasn't as intense, and the temperature was PERFECT (non humid 85 degree day). We swear by Columbia, super light, quick to dry, and protect perfectly! Nate & Blake's preference (mens) , my preference (womens)
* Cooler- This one is just small enough to PERFECTLY inside the canoe, and just big enough to hold 6 waters, 3 gatorades, a sub sandwich, and some string cheese plus a little more room!

King's Landing Emerald Cut Rock Springs Run
This is a one minute clip of the Emerald Cut. You have to go to King's Landing in Apopka, Florida and pay to launch or rent a canoe or kayak there. Paddle down the launch canal and make a right when you get to the rope swing at the end. You will be paddling upstream about about one quarter of a mile (approx) until you reach the pedestrian and final bridge of Kelly Park. The water is usually about 1.5-2 feet deep here and crystal clear. The actual spring head, Rock Springs, is located another .5-.75 miles further upstream. This is called a run. The river the run confluences with is the Wekiva River. The Wekiva river then flows all the way to the St. JohnsRiver, but not before Black Water Creek dumps in. The three waterways feed the Wekiva River Basin. This is one of two federally protected wild and scenic waterway in the state.
My name is Aaron Phillips and I have paddle this run and the Wekiva River for over thirty years. I provide professional production guide services along with location scouting for film projects. In the 2019 season I will be guiding on Wednesdays and more info about this river adventure can be found on website:

Canoeing Rock Springs Run to Wekiva Island on the Wekiva River
Here's a short video of our recent Life Survival trip from King's landing in Apopka to Wekiva Island on the Wekiva River. I recently guided a Life Survival Adventure group down the Rock Springs Run in Apopka, Florida where I grew up. We launched our canoes from King’s Landing off Rock Springs Rd and paddled approximately 8.5 miles to Wekiva Island. This short documentary covers some of the highlights of this adventure.
Often times the water level is so low that I have to get out of the canoe and pull the vessel across the freshwater sand bars. On one such occasion, we decided to break for lunch at Otter Camp in Wekiva State Park. Here we relaxed in the shallows and discussed some of the edible plants in the area. We also dug mussels and hard clams from the riverbed. Food sources are plentiful if you know where to look.
After our break, we ventured a bit further and stopped again to observe a large school of 50 or more garfish. Garfish are edible, but very boney. Some folks claim the fish are tasty when smoked over a fire, but I’ve yet to be convinced of this. However, if you break open the back and pull out the muscle running the length of the fish, it is delicious when cubed, breaded, and deep-fried.
Along the river, we see tons of birds. Some are tiny, darting here and there from tree to bush. Others are a bit bigger, plucking minnows and shrimp from the grasses and lilies. Then there are the largest birds of the river. Are egrets and herons one and the same? You tell me.
Check out the Eel Grass! It’s that rooted, submersed plant with ribbon-like leaves that are waving with the water flow. It’s common in springs and runs here and it provides an excellent habitat for aquatic organisms including damselflies, snails and small fish. Sometimes confused with Strap-leaf Sag, Eel Grass leaves are broader and blunter without the little raised veins.
You know, Florida’s a great place to learn about nature, the environment, and even primitive survival. Most of the plants you see here in the background are either edible, medicinal or provide some resource necessary for survival. Connecting people with nature is our passion. It’s my way of saving the planet. You know, it’s tough to have respect for something you don’t have a relationship with. So, my company, Life Survival does just that. It connects people with nature. From toddlers to troubled teens, eco-tours to survival adventures, family camp-outs and lectures... there’s not much we won’t do to get folks outside. We even offer extreme survival adventures with nothing but a knife.
King’s Landing Outpost in Apopka, Florida has done a phenomenal job of maintaining the beauty of the river; it’s banks, and the waterway. King’s does routine clean ups of the river and provides an excellent outpost service; renting canoes and kayaks, and even provides a return shuttle service from Wekiva Island on the adjoining Wekiva River.
Wekiva Island, where folks from all over come to play, swim, and relax in the Florida sun and clear, clean waters of the river. Wekiva island provides foods, drinks, and is also an outfitter. You can rent kayaks, canoes, and even reserve a cabana for parties, events, or other functions. Just down stream is Shell Island, an ancient native midden great for lunch breaks on the way to the St. Johns River. The island was built up in the middle of the river by ancient generations of dumping snail shells, broken pottery, and animal bones.
These are my Florida friends. They’re some of the craziest, nicest, and happiest people in the state. They know how to have a good time and maintain a positive culture of respect for the environment and the river. Give us a call at Life Survival to book your next outdoor adventure. We’ll build you out an adventure, tailor made for your interests and skill level.
