Aberdeen is a port city in northeast Scotland, where the Dee and Don rivers meet the North Sea. With an offshore petroleum industry, the city is home to an international population. It's also known as the ‘Granite City’ for its many enduring grey-stone buildings. The 19th-century Marischal College is typical – a monumental Victorian landmark that’s now headquarters of the City Council.
Aberdeen is Scotland's third most populous city, one of Scotland's 32 local government council areas and the United Kingdom's 37th most populous built-up area. Nicknames include the Granite City, the Grey City and the Silver City with the Golden Sands. During the mid-18th to mid-20th centuries, Aberdeen's buildings incorporated locally quarried grey granite, which can sparkle like silver because of its high mica content.
Aberdeen received Royal Burgh status from David I of Scotland (1124–53), transforming the city economically. The city's two universities, the University of Aberdeen, founded in 1495, and Robert Gordon University, which was awarded university status in 1992, make Aberdeen the educational centre of the north-east of Scotland. The traditional industries of fishing, paper-making, shipbuilding, and textiles have been overtaken by the oil industry and Aberdeen's seaport. Aberdeen Heliport is one of the busiest commercial heliports in the world and the seaport is the largest in the north-east of Scotland.
Aberdeen has won the Britain in Bloom competition a record-breaking ten times, and hosts the Aberdeen International Youth Festival, a major international event which attracts up to 1000 of the most talented young performing arts companies. In 2015, Mercer named Aberdeen the 57th most liveable city in the world, as well as the fourth most liveable city in Britain. In 2012, HSBC named Aberdeen as a leading business hub and one of eight 'super cities' spearheading the UK's economy, marking it as the only city in Scotland to receive this accolade.
Aberdeen Airport (ABZ), at Dyce in the north of the city, serves domestic and international destinations. The Dee Estuary, Aberdeen's harbour, has continually been improved. Starting out as a fishing port. Aberdeen is connected to the UK National Cycle Network, and has a track to the south connecting to cities such as Dundee and Edinburgh. National Express operate express coach services to London twice daily.

Kingsbarns Golf Links, Fife, Scotland
Kingsbarns Golf Links, Fife, Scotland - Overlooking the North Sea just 7 miles east of St Andrews, golf has been enjoyed over the links land of Kingsbarns since 1793, when it was formerly known as the Kingsbarns Golfing Society.
Everything changed in 2000 when golf course architect Kyle Phillips reinvented links golf with the opening of the game’s first “modern classic” links layout. The club was immediately recognized by Golf Digest as the world’s best new international course. It was clearly an idea whose time had come.
Modern classics are very much like traditional, except they’re longer (7,227 yards for Kingsbarns), the fairways are wider and there are multiple sets of tees. A challenging yet enjoyable Scottish links course, Kingsbarns features spacious rolling fairways, large greens, and exceptional sea views on every hole. In 2001, it landed on Golf Magazine’s world 100 and was paired with the Old Course and Carnoustie to host the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
Today it is World #65 and the 2012 recipient of Golfweek’s Number One Modern Course (built after 1960) in Great Britain and Ireland. A favorite among PerryGolf clients, Kingsbarns Golf Links is not to be missed when you play in St Andrews, Scotland.

Scotland Golf - Gleneagles Kings course
Scotland Golf tours to Gleneagles King's Course, opened in 1919, it is a masterpiece of design which has tested the aristocracy of golf, both professional and amateur. When Lee Trevino first played the King's he memorably remarked; If Heaven is as good as this, I sure hope they have some tee times left. Selecting the right club for each approach shot is the secret on the Gleneagles King's Course. It is certainly one of the most beautiful and exhilarating places to play golf in the world.

Scotland Golf - Kingsbarns Golf Links
Scotland Golf Tour's to Kingsbarns Golf Links, located directly on the North Sea coast only six miles from St. Andrews, Kingsbarns golf links is without a doubt one of the most breathtaking links courses ever developed. Kingsbarns Golf Links is a real one of a kind and a contrast with Scotland's other famous links courses in that it is a new, man-made development. The sea figures prominently on every hole and one's senses are continually pricked with the sights, sounds and smells of the ocean spray. The links boasts spacious fairways, which roll and twist through majestic dune ridges and hollows, while its large inviting greens present the golfer with subtle challenges.
Golf in Scotland: Explained
If there’s one thing Scotland does better than most… it’s golf! After all, we invented the game in the 15th century and it has been played here ever since. Now a global sport that you can play almost anywhere, most players will tell you that they dream of playing in Scotland – the Home of Golf.
But where did it all start? Long before the days of golf tourism, budding players would play with wooden clubs and a ball made from goose feathers. Golfing on Sundays was frowned upon and the sport was even banned by ancient kings, as they thought it was too distracting.
Fast-forward to today and Scotland has around 550 courses, spanning the entire country – some in the most unusual of places. From famous links courses with their undulating fairways and sea views, to inland parkland courses found everywhere from grand country estates to the side of a hill! It will come as no surprise that Scotland has hosted some of the biggest golf tournaments in the world, including many Open Championships, The 2014 Ryder Cup and the upcoming The Solheim Cup 2019.
One of the most famous courses in the world, The Old Course in St Andrews is widely regarded as the place where it all began. This famous links course has been testing golfers since the early 15th century, counting kings and queens amongst its illustrious guests. The course has been pivotal in how the game is played today, ushering in the 18-hole format and hosting more Open Championships than any other course. It’s no wonder that so many golfers get sentimental about this historic Fife town.
For more on the history of golf, you can pay a visit to the British Golf Museum - which you’ll also find in St Andrews. The early history and interactive galleries bring the spirit of the game alive for visitors. The museum also has unrivalled views of the first tee of the Old Course, so if you don’t manage to get a round in, at least you’ll be able to see what all the fuss is about!
But there is more to golf in Scotland than St Andrews, much more. Take Scotland’s Golf Coast in East Lothian, for instance, home to an Open Championship venue of its own, Muirfield, as well as many other challenging courses. Located just 30 minutes from Edinburgh, Scotland’s Golf Coast offers incredible coastline, stunning beaches and rolling countryside – the perfect environment for golf!
You can also play golf in the north of Scotland, so don’t forget to check for local golf clubs if you’re exploring the Highlands and Islands.
There are courses to suit every budget and ability, so don’t miss out!
