Kingsley Plantation - Fort George Island - Jacksonville, FL
We took a trip across the St. Johns River aboard the Mayport Ferry to Fort George Island to visit the historic Kingsley Plantation.
Kingsley Plantation (also known as the Zephaniah Kingsley Plantation Home and Buildings) is the site of a former estate in Jacksonville, Florida, that was named for an early owner, Zephaniah Kingsley, who spent 25 years there. It is located at the northern tip of Fort George Island at Fort George Inlet, and is part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve managed by the U.S. National Park Service.
Kingsley Plantation
The plantation was originally 1,000 acres, most of which has been During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, many people came to Florida. Some, like Zephaniah Kingsley, sought to make their fortunes by obtaining land and establishing plantations. Others were forced to come to Florida to work on those plantations, their labor providing wealth to the people who owned them. Some of the enslaved would later become free landowners, struggling to keep their footing in a dangerous time of shifting alliances and politics. All of these people played a part in the history of Kingsley Plantation.
Taken over by forest; the structures and grounds of the park now comprise approximately 60 acres. Evidence of Pre-Columbian Timucua life is on the island, as are the remains of a Spanish mission named San Juan del Puerto.

Saltwater Underground Railroad Station -5- Kingsley Plantation
The Kingsley Plantation on Fort George Island, Florida was run by Zephaniah Kingsley, a slave trader, and his wife Anna an enslaved African who was from Senegal. Zephaniah purchased Anna in Havana, Cuba and emancipated her in March 1st, 1811.
Prior to their arrival on Fort George Island in 1814, Zephaniah and Anna both owned enslaved Africans and land south of Jacksonville, on the St. Johns River. As a result of Zephaniah's many business interests, he was often away from their newly acquired plantation, and left Anna in charge of all his affairs. At the time, Spanish Florida observed a liberal policy regarding free blacks which allowed them a certain degree of freedom. This all changed in 1821 when Florida became a territory of the United States. Stricter racial laws and oppressive policies resulted in the departure of Anna to Haiti with her children and enslaved Africans in tow. Zephaniah died in 1843 of pulmonary disease, and Anna eventually returned to Florida where she died in 1870.
According to reputable sources, sometime in the 1820s two enslaved Africans escaped from the Kingsley Plantation and took the Saltwater Underground Railroad to The Bahamas.
