Kingston Hydrofoil Kiteboarding - Part 1
This video, which is not intended for commercial distribution, has been uploaded for viewing with up to 4K definition.
Kite Hydrofoiling is a watersport fast-growing in popularity throughout the world and Kingston with its favorable sailing conditions on the eastern end of Lake Ontario is no exception to this trend.
The sensation of flying in silence above the water swells and travelling long distances with little impact on one’s body affords great feeling to riders and an impressive spectacle to anyone watching from shore or watercraft.
However, one is not to be deceived by the ease with which some of the more proficient adepts of the sport are hovering and jumping over the water. It is said that, even to experienced kiteboarders, learning to master the basics of hydrofoiling is a very humbling experience akin to learning to kiteboard allover again.
In this video, three very skilled and accomplished local sailors/kiteboarders are getting acquainted with the fundamentals and challenges of hydrofoiling which should give viewers an appreciation for the training and time it often takes to build or regain the skills that will wow their sport peers and onlookers.
Until then, one has to be prepared to crash and wipe out, often.
This video should give viewers an inkling of the hydrofoil kite boarding experience beginning with launching maneuvers, riding and lifting the board above water, tacking and jibbing while being pulled by and having to control a high performance kite. Adding to the challenge, some riders choose to ride strapless foil boards.
Foils slice through the water with a baffling silence while the kite lines produce mesmerizing whistles as they cut through the air. This is how it felt like to me as I was given first row set to experience the sport in its finest while I was capturing the photo and video elements making up this video. From my perspective, it was hard to determine if the riders were taming the beasts (boards) or vice-versa, nonetheless it is clear that they have to work as one.
All footage was captured at or near Kingston PUC dock during summer/fall 2016. This production is peppered with still images and videos clips of high caliber local and visiting hydrofoilers captured during the 2016 premiere of FORK Hydrofoil Kite Regatta Kingston with the second installment of the event already planned for August 18-20, 2017.
The Kingston sailing community is very much alive!

City of Kingston - Urban K&P Trail
The K&P Trail offers an off road route for recreation and active transportation. The abandoned rail bed was converted into a 15 km multi-use trail for walkers and non-motorized vehicles that extends from the semi-urban area near the Little Cataraqui Creek to Orser Road.
It is open all year and offers a range of scenic experiences through natural open landscapes, rock cuts and wetlands. A pedestrian bridge links rural and urban trail sections at Binnington Court and Dalton Avenue. New way finding signs and parking are available at various points along the trail.
