Old Military Defenses on Kinmen, Taiwan
Kinmen was once on the front lines of the Chinese Civil War. Though it is all quiet today the legacy of the war lives on. The islands are still covered in military installations and defenses.

Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor
The old thermal power plant underneath the granite rocks of Kinmen is now the wine cellar for Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor.
This cellar full of ageing Kaoliang liquor is hidden away in the old army camp's fort, in a complex of underground tunnels where the liquor jugs are placed.
Kinmen Kaoliang is a famous Chinese wine liquor. It's transparent, aromatic, easy to drink and sweet, with a great aftertaste. The key to these qualities lies in using many kinds of yeast made only from wheat, plus a solid grain fermentation process.

Day Trip to Xiju Island (Matsu Islands, Taiwan)
Part of Juguang Township / 莒光鄉 along with Dongju Island / 東莒 (East Ju), Matsu Islands' / 馬祖群島 / 马祖列岛 ( Xiju Island / 西莒 (West Ju) can be reached by ferry (NTD200 or $6.66 one way - 50 minutes, then 10-15 minutes between the two islands) from Fuao Harbor in Nangan / 南竿鄉 / 南竿乡 or by helicopter which only operates during the winter and priority is given to local residents. Sites visited included:
- Qingfan Village. It is the busiest village on Xiju. Its golden age came before the communists took over mainland China; it was the only place in the Matsu islands designated a “town,” and was known as “Little Hong Kong.” The Marshal Chen Temple, which sits beside the harbor, is the center of worship for the island. At the end of the 1930’s the pro-Japanese “Second Route Army of the Peace and National Salvation Army” was based here. In the late 1940s the East Sea forces of the Republic of China retreated here from the mainland, and in the early 1950s Western Enterprises, a front for the United States CIA, set up operations on Cingfan Mountain and flew the American flag here for a while.
- Snake Mountains. A line of four reef islands winding through the sea like a snake. Another explanation for the name is that the water entering and flowing from the sea-eroded terrain in front of the main peak of Snake Island resembles the darting tongue of a snake. In the old days people could walk into the sea to harvest shellfish at low tide here, but now this area is part of the tern preserve. Birds that nest here include the roseate tern, bridled tern, black-naped tern, and greater crested tern, and the “mythical” Chinese crested tern. When summer comes, from the bird-watching pavilion you can see terns soaring in flocks and bathing on the beach.
Taiwan Episode 10 - Seeing China from Taiwan
This episode is the last one of the arch we started with episode 8 (episode 8 9 & 10 should have been only one episode but I realized while editing it was totally impossible).
We are more talkative in this one and after some more wandering in the city we are exploring an old military base in Jiangongyu islet with an improbable yet incredible view over China cityscape in the horizon, looking even more magical with the sunset.
This was the day of our arrival in Kinmen and we already realized this experience was going to be beyond our expectations.

Casino referendum passes in Matsu as many citizens eager to see benefits
Matsu residents voted in favor of a referendum to build casinos on the island. Many believe casinos will lead to improved transportation links with Taiwan and the promise of a monthly subsidy to residents between NT$18,000- 80,000 also swayed lots of voters. A Matsu gaming referendum recently passed. Though only 41 percent of the Island's residents participated. A simple majority of 1795 votes in favor of the casinos passed the referendum, while 1341 voted against it.Yang Sui-sheng Lienchiang County Commissioner There are two levels of this development project. The first is developing an international tourism resort, and then developing a casino inside. I think the most important key to this development project is developing the transportation. Developers have big plans and are not afr
