Kirby's Is Closing ?!
Chuck Kirby let the pigeon feed supply run out, but there wasn't much point in restocking anymore. On Thursday, 140 years after the Kirby Brothers of Medford went into business with a feed mill, they shut them for good.
You can't just go to Walmart and get pigeon feed. It's hard to get specialty feeds, you know? longtime customer Barbara Shimshack said.
Chuck Kirby said he feels like he let his great-grandfather down. All my ancestors worked hard at this business. I think I did, too, Chuck said from behind the counter. But it just wasn't the right time, you know?
A number of factors led up to Kirby Brothers' demise, according to Chuck, including competition from big-box stores and fewer farms with less livestock. Cows used to be huge in this area. But most of the cow farmers? Developers would come in -- they'd offer them more money than they'd be able to make in a couple generations -- they couldn't say no.
Trying to stay relevant, Chuck renovated the place 15 years ago, to adapt to a changing customer base with fewer farmers and more pet owners. But it was a tough row to hoe, and the cold weather Kirby's counts on to sell more feed didn't come this year. That was the last straw. Usually by October, we might be selling 40-50 bags of bird feed a week. This year maybe we sold five to eight bags a week. So it's a huge difference.
Kirby's still has the old wooden wheels, gears and belts that drove grinders and conveyors over the last century and a half. They once had their own feed blends patented in the state agriculture office. But now? Customer Francis Stidfole said the closing store is a sad sign of the times. It's changing a lot. You know, there's feed companies delivering right to your house now, you buy it by the ton. And that's the way it is. And it's a shame, but -- different times.
Chuck said his family will sell the old place -- and he hopes whoever buys it might preserve some of the history of the old place -- but he said he knows the new owners will do what they will.
