ALAGALLA Hike Sri Lanka 2018
Alagalla trek (Potato Range) is one of the intermediate level hiking destinations in Sri Lanka. The mountain has two main entry points, one from Ihala Kotte railway station and other one is from Pilimathalawa via Poththapitiya. Either way is reachable within around 2 hours drive from Colombo
The Ihala Kotte route might be bit difficult for a beginner since the trek itself is a steep climb from the beginning. But from this year onward (2016), you will get a better aid since the local people put concrete steps in steep areas and made a path since there is a Stupa (Pagoda) built and open for devotees on top of the west ridge of the peak. This is much more similar to the upper part of Adams peak, Haramitipana.

Only one 7km (4 mi) hiking trail provides access to the mountain's summit via the Horton Plains National Park, although the trail is not very popular.

Special Note for the Viewers:
I’ve done this video to make you aware of the beauty of this place and please don’t misuse this information in order to ruin it. I’ve spent so much of time/money bringing this to you so that you may enjoy it.
I also have a very kind and humble request to make. Should you ever visit this place, you’re kindly requested to adhere to the following in order to save our Mother Nature not only for the future generations but for the current one as well:
* Avoid careless/irresponsible/money-oriented/mega tour groups or organizers.
* Travel in small groups as Mother Nature can’t afford so many footprints at once. Stick to the designated trails or hardback surfaces at all times.
* Minimize the use of polythene/plastic and do bring them back. Please don’t burn them in the wilderness. Even organic/bio-degradable waste is harmful to the nature and animals. Please stick to the simple rule of “if you pack it in, pack it out”.
* Use reusable water bottles, plates and cups. Even paper cups/plates are harmful and take years to decompose.
* Remain quiet and vigilant. Don’t disturb the tranquility of the nature. Respect wildlife and don’t disturb them in anyway. Also be considerate of other trekkers.
* Please collect and bring any litter/garbage left behind by other careless travellers.
* Don’t light fires unnecessarily and do try to use portable cookers instead of using firewood when camping. If you must, only use firewood on the ground and don’t cut any trees for this.
* Don’t bring any plants back with you or cut any trees/branches unnecessarily..
* Don’t use soap/ shampoo when bathing in natural streams as they contaminate them and kill wildlife.
* Don’t do anything that harms the Mother Nature.

Hiking in Mount Thotupala and Mount Kirigalpoththa - Sri Lanka
A Hiking and a camping trip to Sri Lanka's 3rd highest peak - Thotupalakanda mountain(2357 m) and 2nd highest peak - Kirigalpoththa mountain (2388 m) in Horton plains Sri Lanka. Weather wasn't good enough to use cameras and didn't have any plans to make a video. So too bad we didn't video record the Sambar Deers, the lizards, snakes, the inside of the forest and leopard tracks. :B
Sri Lanka - Beautiful Horton Plains
This is epic. We have started from Ohiya by setting up our Tuk Tuks. Then straight away went to Horton Plains National Park and climbed Mt. Kirigalpoththa, the 2nd highest mountain in Sri Lanka through the breath taking views, springs and green mountains in Horton Plains. Spent the night in a camp site, cooked our own food and next day took the train to Colombo.

::::::::KIRIGALPOTHTHA::::::::
Kirigalpotta is the 2nd tallest mountain in Sri Lanka at 2,388 m (7,835 ft) above mean sea level, and is also the highest mountain in the country whose summit is accessible to the general public (the highest point, Pidurutalagala, is occupied by a military base and off-limits to the public). The peak is situated near the city of Nuwara Eliya, within the Nuwara Eliya District. Only one 7 km (4 mi) hiking trail provides access to the mountain's summit via the Horton Plains National Park, The trail is not very much popular & sometimes we had to find the trail to this incredible mountain by using our own instincts. We observed some footprints left by the Leopards live in this beautiful environment on the way to this mountain. This is not just a hike for some usual mountain climbers, but also this is something that you can test your path-finding skills when you go through some unknown territory.
::::::::HORTON PLAINS NATIONAL PARK::::::::
The Horton Plains are the headwaters of three major Sri Lankan rivers, the Mahaweli, Kelani, and Walawe. In Sinhala the plains are known as Maha Eliya Plains (මහ එළිය තැන්න). Stone tools dating back to Balangoda culture have been found here. The plains' vegetation is grasslands interspersed with montane forest and includes many endemic woody plants. Large herds of Sri Lankan sambar deer feature as typical mammals and the park is also an Important Bird Area with many species not only endemic to Sri Lanka but restricted to the Horton Plains. Forest dieback is one of the major threats to the park and some studies suggest that it is caused by a natural phenomenon.
