Kirkjufell mountain in West Iceland
Referred to as the Mountain shaped like an arrowhead in the Game of Thrones TV series - where it played a prominent role in series six and seven - Kirkjufell actually means Church Mountain, as it also resembles an Icelandic medieval turf church.
It is one of Iceland's iconic mountains and stands on the long Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland. It is possible to climb it, but only for skilled mountaineers and a guide is necessary to breach the summit.

First day of summer in Iceland. And we reach kirkjufell roof. Is amazing hiking. Is should be number 1 in list! When you come to Iceland
Climbing Kirkjufell Mountain in Iceland
Iceland's most famous mountain on a perfect day. Hiking the 468m from sea level to (nearly) the top with my girlfriend. We couldn't reach the summit as the final ascent involved a 8 metre vertical cliff that had to be free climbed. Falling would have meant serious injury so Abi persuaded me not to. It was an exhilarating climb and the views were spectacular. This mountain is a regular backdrop on Game Of Thrones!

This arrowhead mountain is actually called Kirkjufell, but it is often referred to as “The Game of Thrones Mountain”, not only because of the iconic scenes in series seven but also because foreign visitors in Iceland find it really difficult to pronounce Icelandic place names.
It is often said that Kirkjufell is the most photographed mountain in Iceland, and with its isolated position and distinct shape, it is easy to see why. The 463-metre tall mountain has a sharp top, long, curved sides and at the base, visitors can find a lake which on clear days reflects a perfect mirror image of the mountain.
There is also a small but stunning three-pronged waterfall nearby which photographers love to capture on film, framing the majestic Kirkjufell mountain in the background.
Kirkjufell is located near the fishing town of Grundarfjörður on the northern side of Snæfellsnes, a peninsula famed for its diverse attractions. Aside from the stunning Kirkjufell mountain, you can find black pebble beaches, silvery waterfalls, rugged cliffs, and a majestic glacier, on this 90 km stretch of land.
Top locations in Iceland: Kirkjufell Mountain
Fans of the HBO series Game of Thrones will recognise Kirkjufell as a shooting location from Season 7 of Game of Thrones. The mountain is showcased from the scenes ‘North beyond the Wall’ when Jon Snow, The Hound and Jorah Mormont, amongst others, brave the wilderness in hopes of catching an undead wight.
It is often called ‘the most photographed mountain in Iceland’, because of its distinctly shaped peak and could be found on the north shore of Iceland’s Snaefellsnes Peninsula.

I turned to the last destination of this journey. The Gdansk Fjord is located on the Sinaefelsnes peninsula in western Iceland. The reason I came here as a final destination is to see Kirkcupel, the church mountain of the Icelandic soul. It seems to have transplanted the natural beauty of Iceland, with its majestic, magnificent and unspoiled pure appearance. I give my thanks to the birds who keep Kyrkupel to finish the trip safely. The Vikings said they wanted to conceal Iceland after they first discovered it.

Ég sneri við síðasta áfangastað þessari ferð. The Gdansk Fjord er staðsett á Sinaefelsnes skaganum í vesturhluta landsins. Ástæðan fyrir að ég kom hingað sem endanlega áfangastað er að sjá Kirkcupel, kirkjan fjall íslensku sálarinnar. Það virðist hafa flutt náttúrufegurð landsins, með glæsilegu, stórkostlegt og óspillta hreinu útliti sínu. Ég þakka mínum fuglum sem halda Kyrkupel að klára ferðina á öruggan hátt. Víkingar sögðu þeir vildu leyna Ísland eftir að þeir uppgötva það fyrst.

Overview[edit]
The town received the right to do commerce in 1786. Around 1800, French merchants came to Iceland and lived in Grundarfjörður, where they constructed a church and a hospital of their own. The town has become rich through the fishing industry, and this wealth shows in the style of the original, luxurious houses being built.
The road to nearby Stykkishólmur crosses a big lava field, called Berserkjahraun. The name of the lava field comes from the Eyrbyggja saga, according to which two Berserkers were slain here by their master, because one of them fell in love with his master's daughter.
