At the time when Gandhi was released for the last time in the year 1944 from the Aga Khan Palace by the British Government, the residential public of Porbandar had decided to construct an ideal memorial on the birth palace of Mahatmaji.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 into an Indian Gujarati Hindu Modh Baniya family in Porbandar (also known as Sudamapuri), a coastal town on the Kathiawar Peninsula and then part of the small princely state of Porbandar in the Kathiawar Agency of the Indian Empire.

Kirti Mandir was built in the honour of Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba Gandhi in Porbandar in the Indian State of Gujarat. Walking through its corridors and witnessing the daylight coming through the teal coloured window frames is a mesmerising experience. The age-old Oil paintings of both Mahatma and Kasturba Gandhi and black and white photographs engaged in activities, discussions and even sharing a light moment have enticed and drawn many history buffs from all over the world.

Built in 1936 as a royal mausoleum of the Gaekwad dynasty, Kirti Mandir now stands as a glorious monument of Vadodara. The grand building, situated in the heart of the city, was set up in the honor of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III's silver jubilee celebration. This E-shaped building features beautiful elements like balconies, terraces, tombs, domes and a brilliantly carved 35 meters high central shikhara. Although it looks simple from the outside, but the temple interiors showcases impressive pictures, murals by Nandalal Bose, based on themes like Gangavataran, Life of Meera, the battle of Mahabharat and Natir Poojan and some rare paintings from the famous artist Raja Ravi Varma. No doubt, Gaekwad's were the heir to a tradition of oriental refinement, a great patron of the arts, literature, philosophy and science, all these are best depicted through the exteriors and interiors of Kirti Mandir.

Porbandar - The Birthplace of the Mahatma

Nearly 500 eager tourists visit the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, every day in Porbandar located on the northwestern coast of Gujarat. The three-storied house was bought by his great grand father nearly 200 years ago where he was born as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in 1869. Made out of limestone and wood, the structure has undergone several changes since its construction and was restored partially post the earthquake in Gujarat in January 2001. In 2003, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) that maintains it announced it as the monument of national importance. Adjacent to his ancestral home, a memorial was inaugurated in 1950 called the Kirti Mandir that has a library and museum among other units.
