Japan travel : Kebudayaan Ukiyo-e termasuk lukisan Gunung Fuji oleh Hiroshige di Museum Kishu, Wakayama10
Shirahama, a well-known onsen (hot spring) resort in Wakayama Prefecture, has a lot to offer its visitors. Being one of the “top three” onsen resorts (the other two famous onsen resorts are Atami on the Izu Peninsula and Beppu in Kyushu), Shirahama attracts many visitors. Being only 100 kilometers south of Osaka, it is safe to say many of its visitors are from Osaka.
But onsen (hot spring) is not the only thing Shirahama has to offer. The name Shirahama literally means “white beach”. This is due to the 500 meter long sandy, white-white sand beach. With the hotels located a few feet from the beach, visitors can enjoy the easy access to the warm waters on the white sand. In the summer time, there are nightly fireworks.
In addition to water related attractions, Shirahama has a cultural side as well. Visitors interested in Japanese art are strongly recommended to visit the Kishu Museum. The museum displays collections of Japanese art works such as ceramics and ukiyo-e (woodblock prints). Works by the famous ukiyo-e artists Eishousai Chouki as well as Andou Hiroshige can be seen here. Tea ceremony articles as well as pottery and porcelain from the Edo Period are also displayed at this museum.

Vlog 34 - Wakayama Castle and MoMA
Bless Nia's heart for putting up with me all through our trip to Tokyo and the few days she spent with me in Wakayama. What a trooper. In this vlog we spent the day wandering around Wakayama Castle and checking out the Wakayama Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). I recommend both places if you're ever in the area.

Japan Travel: Togakushi Shrine feel spritual energy, Nagano31 Moopon
Togakushi Shrine ( Togakushi Jinja) consists of a lower, a middle and an upper shrine in the woody mountains northwest of Nagano's city center. The shrines are related to an important story in Japanese mythology in which the Sun Goddess hid herself in a cave in present day Takachiho in Kyushu after her brother had misbehaved, as a result, bringing darkness to the world.
In order to get the sunlight back, the other deities tried to coax the Sun Goddess out of the cave by performing spectacular dance performances in front of it. As the Sun Goddess took a peek out, one of the deities grabbed the cave's stone door and threw it away not to allow her to hide again. The stone door flew all the way to Togakushi in Nagano Prefecture, which is also how the area got its name: Togakushi literally means hiding door.
Today, the upper shrine worships the deity who grabbed and threw away the stone door, while the middle shrine enshrines the deity who performed the dance in front of the cave. The shrines of Togakushi are connected both by roads and hiking trails up the mountain's forested slopes. Visitors would first arrive at the torii gate of the lower shrine, from which is a long flight of stairs leading up to its praying hall. A two kilometer ascent from here takes you to the middle shrine, which stands at the top of a small town of shops and restaurants. The shrine features a praying hall with nice architecture, a small waterfall, and sacred trees which are over 800 years old.
The entrance to the upper shrine is another two kilometers uphill from the middle shrine. From the parking lot and bus stop starts the two kilometer long approach to the shrine, which is lined by over 300 tall cryptomeria trees, passes the thatched-roof Zuishinmon Gate along the way, and ends with a series of stone steps. The shrine's main hall spectacularly stands in the steep mountainside of Mount Togakushi with the mountain peaks towering above.
An alternative trail to the upper shrine leads via Kagamiike (Mirror Pond), a serene pond which reflects the surrounding mountain landscape nicely. Note also that the Togakure Ninpo Museum is situated right next to the entrance to the upper shrine, while the Kids Ninja Village is close in the vicinity of the middle shrine, making interesting additions to the shrine visits.
Access info.
Take bus number 70 or 71 from Nagano Station in direction of Togakushi. Alight at Togakushi-Hokosha for the lower shrine (戸隠宝光社, 50 minutes, 1150 yen one way), Togakushi-Chusha for the middle shrine (戸隠中社, 60 minutes, 1250 yen one way) or Togakushi-Okushairiguchi for the upper shrine (戸隠奥社入口, 65 minutes, 1350 yen one way). There is roughly one bus per hour. Take advantage of a discounted round trip tickets between Nagano and Togakushi-Hokosha (2100 yen) and between Nagano and Togakushi-Chusha (2250 yen).
In addition, the Togakushi Kogen Free Kippu travel ticket is available for 2600 yen and includes a) a round trip between central Nagano and the Togakushi area, b) free use of buses within Togakushi, and c) one additional bus ride between Nagano Station and Zenkoji. Japan Trip: Beautifully Complicated at the Kongobuji Temple in Wakayama 11
Japan Trip: Beautifully Complicated at the Kongobuji Temple in Wakayama 11
Kongobuji Temple, located center of Koya-Town in Wakayama Prefecture, was constructed in 1593 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in honor of his mother. Later merged with another temple, Kongobuji Temple became the head temple of Shingon Buddhism, a Buddhist sect introduced to Japan by Kobo Daishi in 805.
The vast grounds of the Kongobuji Temple have numerous buildings with different rooms for the various temple functions. Visitors are allowed to enter the building for a small fee but please be aware that wearing shoes within the premises is not allowed. Once paying the entrance fee, visitors will first approach the Ohiroma Room. Important rituals and religious ceremonies were conducted here. The room’s sliding doors (fusuma) are decorated with cranes painted by the famous Kano Tanyu.
Next to the Ohiroma Room are the “Plum” and “Willow” Room, so named by the paintings on the fusuma (sliding door). The Willow Room is where Toyotomi Hidetsugu ended his own life as he was ordered to do so by his uncle Hideyoshi.
Visitors will be directed to the long corridor which leads to a recent addition to the temple. In a large tatami room, visitors are invited to rest and enjoy some tea and a cookie.
Visitors will find rooms whose fusuma (sliding doors) are decorated in seasonal flowers in the adjacent building. Here, visitors can see displays about Kobo Daishi, his journey to China and his founding of Koyasan.
The Banryutei Rock Garden is located behind this building. The largest rock garden in Japan, Banryutei Rock Garden was constructed in 1984. The largest rocks are from Shikoku, the birthplace of Kobo Daishi. They represent a pair of dragons emerging from a sea of clouds.
The recommended temple route will lead back to Kongobuji’s main building. Here visitors can see the Jodannoma Audience room, an extravagant room used to receive visiting Dignitaries. The room’s walls and fusuma (sliding door) are covered in gold. The ceilings even have flower carvings.
The last room of the Kongobuji Temple tour is the kitchen. With its large hearth, the kamado stoves were large enough to feed up to 2000 people.
