Fishing with Birds: Cormorant fishing in Inuyama, Japan.
The ayu (sweetfish) on my plate was caught by a cormorant bird (ukai) during a traditional cormorant fishing expedition that we had the privilege to witness in 2005 on the Kiso river in Inuyama, Japan.
The birds are on leashes and swim out ahead of the boat, diving to catch fish attracted by the big torch affixed to the front of the boat.
When a cormorant makes a catch, it is reeled in and the fish is removed from its beak. Little rings around their necks prevent them from swallowing any large fish that they catch.

Cormorant fishing on the Kiso River - Night Tour
It is around 6:30 p.m. afternoon on the picturesque Kiso River (Inuyama City, Aichi). Right at the end of the Japanese summer, when the sun has practically gone down, the spectacle of cormorant fishing begins. The cormorant fishing, called in Japanese Ukai (鵜飼) is a traditional fishing method with more than 1300 years of tradition, in which cormorants, aquatic birds, are trained and used to catch freshwater fish such as ayu (鮎).

Kiso River cruise (Japan's Rhine)
The Kiso River (木曽川, Kiso-gawa) is a river in Japan roughly 227 km long, flowing through the prefectures of Nagano, Gifu, Aichi, and Mie before emptying into Ise Bay a short distance away from the city of Nagoya. It is the main river of the Kiso Three Rivers (along with Ibi and Nagara rivers) and forms a major part of the Nōbi Plain. The valley around the upper portion of the river forms the Kiso Valley.
Parts of the Kiso River are sometimes referred to as the Japan Rhine because of its similarities to the Rhine in Europe.

In today’s episode of Cycling Japan, I travel to the Momotaro Shrine (桃太郎神社) in Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture (愛知県犬山市). Momotaro is like the equivalent of Superman in Japan. He was born out of a peach with immense super powers which he used to conquer demons with his animal friends. He’s also not wearing any clothes most of the time, which does not seem to be a problem here in Japan, as he can be seen in his full glory at the shrine with his giant statue.
The first part of today’s ride is me riding from Nagakute (near Nagoya) to Inuyama city. Then I stop next to the temple at Momotaro Park (桃太郎公園) for some good bbq, swimming in the Kiso river (木曽川), and some gool ol’ drone flying.
The Momotaro Temple bit starts at the 9:00 timemark, so you can skip to there if you want.
I take a different route home through the mountains and stop by Joukouji Station (定光寺駅) to get some evening shots with the drone, which turned out fantastic!

Kiso River in Inuyama Yuen 15 August 2009
River road near Inuyama
For one night of our stay in the Nagoya area we were hosted in the small town of Inuyama which happens to be home a beautiful castle and the nicest onsen we encountered in our month of travels. The drive along this road led to the small restaurant featured in my Only vegetarian meal video clip as well as to the Peach Boy Shrine, featured in a clip of the same name. While in Inuyama, we also saw the old fashioned fishing tradition of using birds to catch fish from boats at night. It was pretty interesting, but my movies were all too dark to be worth posting.
