Whilst waiting for the motorhome to be valeted we made a visit to Kit Hill, near Callington in Cornwall. Kit Hill after some reading is in fact part of the mining area of these parts. The video (eventually) tells the history of Kit Hill.

Found A Mine At The Summit!

I visited Kit hill and was swamped by the mist! Quite atmospheric.
Found a mine too - we will explore it as a group in the near future.

Stoke Climsland - Callington

Torr House was the first Duchy Home Farm property and was purchased from the Duchy of Cornwall by our client in 1979, after being declared unfit for human habitation 12 years previously. A period of intensive renovation by our client has transformed this property into a fantastically spacious 8-9 bedroom residence which is currently arranged as the main house plus two self-contained flats (which are restricted to occupation by one family). Set in around 1.1 acres with outbuildings and glorious views over surrounding countryside, this property really is a hidden gem.

Callington is a civil parish and town in southeast Cornwall, England, United Kingdom about 7 miles north of Saltash and 9 miles south of Launceston.Callington parish had a population of 4,783 in 2001, according to the 2001 census.This had decreased slightly to 4,698 in the 2011 census.

Kit Hill

Last Sunday we went to Kit Hill near Callington. Kit Hill is the highest point in the Tamar Valley. It is topped by it's distinctive tower or chimney. It is actually a chimney where there used to be a steam engine to pump water and lift ore from the mine below. You can see for miles from here. We all went there today apart from A who was off doing athletics. And mum came with us again.

Let me start off by saying that I am a complete novice to RC flying. Previously I had attempted to fly a small RC helicopter and I ended up crashing it in spectacular fashion about a minute after take off.
I decided to go for the Syma X5c-1 after some research that suggested it was one of the easiest quad-copters in the budget range to fly.
Here you can get an idea of how easy it is for a beginner to fly, and also the quality of the video camera.
I had tried it out briefly once before but due to high winds and improper set up it was quite unstable and was all over the place.
This time it handled much better after it was properly set up (the instruction booklet is not very good to be honest. Googling how to do it is much more helpful)

Weather - Cloudy with a light breeze.

The battery lasted about 8 minutes with the Prop guards on. The first half of the flight having the video camera running, and the second half with it switched off.
No fancy moves yet! I'm still trying to get a feel for the controls.

Tansys Golowan St John’s Eve Bonfire at Kit Hill

CORMAC Countryside team at Kit Hill near Callington in Cornwall helped out at “Tansys Golowan” or St John’s Eve Bonfire on the 23rd June which is an annual tradition maintained by the Old Cornwall Society.
Bonfires are lit as a celebration of the Summer, and a ceremony is held to make sure the sun comes back next year!

Gunnislake is a large village in east Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is situated in the Tamar Valley approximately ten miles north of Plymouth Gunnislake is in the civil parish of Calstock and is close to Cornwall's border with Devon which follows the course of the River Tamar. It has an electoral ward in its own name which includes much of Calstock and the surrounding area. The population at the 2011 census was 4,574.

The village has a history of mining although this industry is no longer active in the area. During the mining boom in Victorian times more than 7000 people were employed in the mines of the Tamar Valley. During this period Gunnislake was held in equal standing amongst the richest mining areas in Europe

There has recently been discovered a significant Roman fort on the outskirts of Calstock, the largest known Roman site in Cornwall and the famous painting by Turner 'Crossing the Brook' exhibited in 1815 is in fact a view of Newbridge. Newbridge was built c. 1520: it is 182 feet long and has seven arches. It is built of large regular granite blocks and is considered by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner to be the best of the Cornish granite bridges.

Gunnislake's development was primarily due to the dramatic increase in mining and industrial activity in the nineteenth century. Mining provided around 7000 jobs at its peak in 1862. Most mining activity ceased in the late nineteenth century which has bequeathed interest for archaeologists and students of industrial heritage. As well as mining, other industry such as brickworks and quarries were present. Nearby, locations such as Kit Hill, Morwellham Quay, Cotehele and Calstock were mined and quarried and the Tamar was used for transporting the raw material obtained from the works. Arsenic was produced at Greenhill, Gunnislake until at least 1930.

The area is mainly residential with a small handful of businesses ranging from pubs to garages and small shops. Gunnislake is located in the Tamar Valley designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, though some recent industrial development has been attempted and achieved. Within early 2006 Hingston Down Quarry installed a new asphalt production tower which is easily noticeable as it is proud of the skyline of Gunnislake.

Gunnislake railway station is the northern terminus of the Tamar Valley Line, which connects the villages of the Tamar valley with the city of Plymouth. (See also Plymouth, Devonport and South Western Junction Railway.) Gunnislake is now the terminus of the line but until 1966 it continued north to Callington. In 1994 the station was resited to remove a low road bridge. Contentiously debated in the local press, the future of Gunnislake's rail-link with Plymouth has, in recent years, come under threat by the proposed re-establishment of a disused railway line between Tavistock and Plymouth.
