Book Discussion: A Philosophy of Autobiography - Kitab Khana Bookstore, Mumbai
Book Discussion: A Philosophy of Autobiography: Body & Text, by Aakash Singh Rathore - Kitab Khana Bookstore, Fort, Mumbai, India, 2 April 2019.
Dr Yudit Greenberg (Rollins College, Florida) led the evening’s event.
A Philosophy of Autobiography: Body & Text (Routledge, 2019)
This book offers intimate readings of a diverse range of global autobiographical literature with an emphasis on the (re)presentation of the physical body. The twelve texts discussed include philosophical autobiography (Nietzsche), autobiographies of self-experimentation (Gandhi, Mishima, Warhol), literary autobiography (Hemingway, Das) as well as other genres, including the graphic novel (Spiegelman, Satrapi), as also documentations of tragedy and injustice and subsequent overcoming (Ambedkar, Pawar, Angelou, Wiesel).
The book delves into how the authors treated here deal with the flesh through their autobiographical writing and in what way they embody the essential relationship between flesh, spirit and word. It analyses some seminal texts, such as Ecce Homo, The Story of My Experiments with Truth, Waiting for a Visa, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, A Moveable Feast, Night, Baluta, My Story, Sun and Steel, The Philosophy of Andy Warhol, MAUS and Persepolis.

We headed out to see the museum. Lost our way, walked around town, ended up in a bookstore meanwhile only to learn that the best things happen when they aren't planned.

Anand Thakore reads 'Glacier', Kitabkhana, Mumbai
Poet and Hindustani Khayal Singer, Pandit Anand Thakore, 'Sabadpiya' reads from ' Elephant Bathing', his newly published collection of verse, at Kitabkhana bookstore , Mumbai, followed by a session in conversation with Arundhathi Subramaniam.
Arundhahti Subramaniam on 'Elephant Bathing': Anand Thakore's verse has many of the qualities that I value in poetry: a richness and clarity of image, an assured musicality, a sensuous fascination with the 'surfaces of things' as well as the fevered need to probe those surfaces, however beguiling, and 'forage for meaning'. These poems embody and explore interesting tensions: an almost oracular mode that is capable of swerving abruptly into the mock-heroic or vividly anecdotal; a repeatedly articulated need for stasis as well as the need for change; an impulse to craft a self and a world that is sovereign and inviolable and yet welcome a 'stark and craftless rapture'; the urge to remain 'sealed', 'inanimate', 'unhurt', and yet open out to surprise, danger, denouement, and the inevitable journey 'downhill and seawards'. Eventually, the age-old question of whether truth and beauty must be mutually exclusive, which churns in its own particular way at the heart of Thakore's work, is best stilled by the luminosity of metaphor -- such as the image of an elephant's single tusk above the river-line, 'white as a quarter-moon in mid-July/ before the coming of a cloud.'
