Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine, Mt Fuji in 4K - 北口本宮冨士浅間神社 - Japan As It Truly Is
The Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine at the foot of Mt Fuji is a beautiful shrine and starting point for those climbing to the top.
Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Jinja (北口本宮冨士浅間神社) was established in 788 AD to pray for protection from Mt. Fuji erupting (the volcano is not extinct). Some traditional Mt. Fuji climbers start at the Fujiyoshidas Sengen Shrine and say a prayer before their climb, even though it makes it twice as long - most modern climbers start further up, which just takes 5 hours or so. The main shrine hall in the Momoyama style was completed in 1615, and other impressive sights include its giant torii gate and several sacred cedar trees which are over 1000 years old.
You can reach the Sengen Shrine in a 20 minute walk from Mt. Fuji Stn, or a 5 minute bus ride (get off at the Kitaguchi Hongu Fujisengen Jinja-mae bus stop). There are also buses from Kawaguchiko Station, but beware of traffic jams in rush hour - it could take more than twice as long as normal.
Please note that there are several Sengen Shrines in the region. If taking a taxi, make sure you are going to the right one.

Arakura Fuji Sengen Jinja, Chureito Pagoda, Japan - Canon 80D - Virtual Trip
The name of Arakura Fuji Sengen does not necessarily mean much to travelers, and yet the images of this temple with Mount Fuji in the background decorate all the guides on Japan. The epic image of the pagoda facing Mount Fuji very often serves to illustrate the exotic Japanese style. The Arashiyama bamboo plantation and the Fushimi Inari and its red toriis in Kyoto are known, the huge torii in the water at Miyajima near Hiroshima, but the Arakura Fuji Sengen Temple is less well known. It is actually found on google more often under the name of Chureito Pagoda, which means in fact the only pagoda that we see in all the photos.
Located in the region of Mount Fuji Five Lakes in Yamanashi Prefecture, his visit forces him to make a junction on the Tokyo - Kyoto axis.
Accessible from Shimoyoshida Station on Fujikyu Sen, it is best to go by bus from Kawaguchiko. If you have your luggage with you, there are plenty of lockers at Kawaguchiko Station. It's easier than going down to Shimoyoshida, visiting the temple, returning to the station, heading back to Kawaguchiko to see the lake etc. In addition, all the tourist buses but also the local buses leave Kawaguchiko and some pass among others by this temple. For a question of organization, it is therefore simpler.

Sengen Shrine, Fujiyoshida Yamanashi prefecture
Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine is in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi Prefecture. It is claimed that the shrine is 2000 years old. It is locatd at the north entrance to Mount Fuji.
Legends say that when Yamatotakeru no Mikoto was on his eastern campaign, he visited this spot and ordered that a Shinto Torii gate be built to mark the sacredness of Mount Fuji. He made an imperial proclamation that people should always climb Mount Fuji from this gate.
It is recorded that the first shrine was built in 788 but the shrine standing today was built by Torii Naritsugu in 1615.
There are actually approximately 1,310 Sengen Shinto shrines in Japan. Sengen shrines are centered around the worship of the kami Konohana-no-sakuyahime-no-mikoto, the daughter of the mountain god Ōyamatsumi-no-Mikoto. Konohana-no-sakuyahime-no-mikoto is the kami of Mount Fuji. Due to her fidelity, she is revered as a model for Japanese women.
Sengen shrines are found primarily in Shizuoka Prefecture and Yamanashi Prefecture, with a few smaller ones in other areas of the Kantō region and Aichi.
Generally, Sengen shrines must be within sight of Mount Fuji, and thus in connection with Konohana-no-sakuyahime-no-mikoto. Where obstructions hinder a direct view of Mount Fuji a Fujizuka or miniature Mount Fuji is erected instead where Konohana-no-sakuyahime-no-mikoto can be worshipped. A Fujizuka may be made from almost anything, but it must contain rocks from Mount Fuji which are believed to be imbued with the spirit or essence of Konohana-no-sakuyahime-no-mikoto.
Popular worship of Mount Fuji among all classes goes back to the Muromachi period (1392-1573) and has been passed down to today.
In 1561 the feudal lord Takeda Shingen had the Eastern Shrine built in order to placate the kami. He prayed to the kami for a victory at the fourth and most famous battle of Kawanakajima (Sept 1561)
There are quite a few buildings that are over 300 years old. The Eastern Shrine and the Western Shrine are classified as National Historical Treasures of Japan.
There are three sacred trees fenced off and marked by sacred rice straw ropes which are over 1000 years old standing in front of and to the right of the main shrine.

富士山の神社:北口本宮冨士浅間神社
Kitaguchi Hongū Fuji Sengen Jinja (北口本宮冨士浅間神社, North Entrance Fuji ), winter 2018 27 december
There are more than a thousand Fuji Sengen shrines across Japan, dedicated to Princess Konohanasakuya, the Shinto deity associated with Mount Fuji. Fujiyoshida Sengen Shrine, formally known as Kitaguchi Hongū Fuji Sengen Jinja (北口本宮冨士浅間神社, North Entrance Fuji Sengen Shrine), is the main Sengen Shrine on the north side of the mountain. The head shrine of them all is the Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha on the opposite side of the mountain in Fujinomiya.
Fujiyoshida Sengen Shrine stands in a dense forest and is set off from the road by a long approach lined by stone lanterns and shaded by tall cedar trees. The shrine's red painted buildings include a main hall dating from 1615, a dancing stage and a few auxiliary buildings.

Fuji Omuro Sengen Shrine 冨士御室浅間神社
Originally it was enshrined at the second station of Mt. Fuji in the year 699, but the building was burned down in an eruption about 1200 years ago. Then, in 958, new buildings were built on the south shore of Kawaguchi-ko Lake.

FUJIYOSHIDA SENGEN SHRINE, TOKYO JAPAN. 藤吉田奉行神社。Japan travel guide.
Mount Fuji is the icon of Japan and is very well known. However it is not just at the current moment in which Mount Fuji is seen as a monument of beauty. In the Shinto religion, the native religion of Japan, Mount Fuji was worshipped as a god. In this way people did not climb Mount Fuji in order to get near to God, as this was a place for God, but rather worshipped from its base. Therefore Shinto shrines were built around the base of Mount Fuji, and were well attended for hundreds of years. One of the most famous shrines for Mount Fuji is the Fujiyoshida Sengen Shrine. It is also known as Kitaguchihongu
