KITAVA TROBRIAND ISLANDS
CEREMONIAL DANCES PERFORMED BY THE CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS OF THE TROBRIAND ISLANDS.
Kitava in the Trobriand chain of Papua New Guinea, an idyllic, rarely visited clutch of coral atolls and volcanic islands east of Milne Bay. Located 450km from the mainland, the islands' isolation has allowed a unique culture to flourish among the 12,000 inhabitants, creating a series of festivals, beliefs and traditions only accessible to Orion passengers. Made up of four islands -- Kiriwina, Kaileuna, Vakuta and Kitava -- the Trobriands were dubbed the 'love islands' by horrified missionaries, who arrived to discover an established matrilineal tradition, a ring of peace trading known as kula, and some rather curious ideas about sex.
Life is pretty simple on Kitava. Families wander down the beaten dirt track from the island's main village some 30 minutes walk away, and set up camp in the shade of the palms, in part to watch the traditional dancing on the beach, and in part to run a curious eye over the outsiders with their gadgets, bug spray and layers of completely unnecessary clothing. They spread out hand-carved jungle deities, intricately etched bowls and chains of gleaming shells, should the din-dins want to take a souvenir home with them. In the distance children play in the shallows.

Melanesia Cruise: Excursion to Kitava Island, Papua New Guinea
Kitava is one of the four major islands in the Trobriand Islands group of Papua New Guinea. Famous for its huge yam gardens (wealth on Kitava revolves around yams), and burial caves, villagers performed ceremonial dances on the white sand.
Local islanders sailed from miles around to watch the ceremonial dancers while locals cheered on friends and children performing. The local islanders are also being studied for their longevity and good health by scientists. Hmm... perhaps a yam diet?
