Kitesurfing Cape Town, South Africa - Wind | Water | Wild - - Ep. 01: Cape Point & Scarborough
Kitesurfing at the most southwestern point of Africa where any mistake could mean you're drifting to Antarctica. In these conditions, things get just a bit more real. In this episode of Wind Water Wild, Luke McGillewie introduces us to kiteboarding in Cape Town, South Africa. Follow his search for wind and waves to the remote corners of South Africa's Western Cape.
This season in Cape Town has been pretty slow... Normally January in Cape Town is full of endless windy days, but this season has been a different story. Normally, I can get a session at Kite Beach right outside of my house nearly every day. Not this year. There has been wind, you just have to go out and find it!
Finding good kitesurfing conditions can be like rolling the dice. Waking up on this day, it looked like Cape Point was the only spot that had the potential to go off. But if it goes wrong in a spot so remote, the consequences are high. With so much wildlife at sea and on land, it's a sure sign of sharky waters. Sometimes you have to take that risk to get that sweet reward - in this case, an epic solo session at Pletboom Bay.
After a long day of exploring, we hung up our harnesses at The Burrow in Scarborough. A breathtaking sunset, cold beer, and fire-grilled burgers was just what was needed to cap off the day. Waking up to a still morning, we could sense the wind building as the dawn broke. Witsands is one of the most popular wave spots near Cape Town, but our early morning gamble paid off. Another epic solo kitesurf session in the bag!
Looking back at the kiteboarding mission from this weekend, it's clear that even during a strange windy season in Cape Town, there's still a session to be had every day of the week if you're willing to go the distance.

Kitesurfing Cape Town, South Africa - Wind | Water | Wild - - Ep. 02: Hermanus
Wind Water Wild is a four part series highlighting kitesurfing in stunning South Africa. From the wild west coast to the southern tip of the continent, we dive into the remarkable yet formidable natural conditions in the Western Cape. Cape Town local Luke McGillewie takes you on an incredible journey in this video series produced by Madic Media. We're searching for the perfect wave where the Pacific and Atlantic ocean meet, experiencing close encounters with wildlife in the heathlands, sending insane airs at Kite Beach (home of the Red Bull King of the Air), and clinking glasses after a day well spent with the local kiteboarding community.
Hermanus is the spot to be for flatwater and freestyle... and when you've got an awesome crew of kiters, you know it's going to be a good time! In this episode of Wind Water Wild, Luke McGillewie takes us to Hermanus for a secret spot mission and a session in 'The Pond'.
Cape Town might be one of the most beautiful cities in the world... definitely one of the windiest. But this season has really been something else. To get a session in, you're going to have to go the distance!
When the wind's not blowing at Cape Town's Kite Beach in Blouberg, it's time to start checking the forecast to see where it's working. A flatwater session at 'The Pond' in Grotto Bay in Hermanus is always a treat, but when the wind is thumping? Everyone and their mom is on the water! We got a tip about a secret spot that was going to work, so it was time to get the local Liquid Force crew together...
After an epic flatwater session with friends and teammates at the secret spot, it was time to crack a couple beers, fire up the braai, and kick back at a holiday home in Hermanus. Nothing beats celebrating a great session with your friends... Except maybe a fun session at Grotto Bay!
With butter flat water in The Pond and waves just across the sand, there's more than a little bit of fun to be had. And with the right crew? It's always a laugh! The sessions with friends are the ones that really stick in the memory books.
After another epic Cape Town kite mission, we're already looking forward to the next adventure. On the next episode of Wind Water Wild, we're off to the West Coast National Park for sessions in the blue lagoon...

Drift HD170: Kitesurfing at Blouberg in Cape Town 2010.11.01
Some footage shot on one of the milder days in Cape Town. In the 10 days that I was there, I only used the 12m three times. Almost every day was perfect for the 7m. On one of the days I had to sit it out because I didn't take my 5m with!
The wind in Cape Town is really strong and consistent. No wonder the likes of Lenten and Hadlow spend most of their time here...

If you are coming on a kite surfing holiday to Cape Town be sure to check out a few key spots:
1) Langebaan is an awesome kite location - 100KM up the coast from Cape Town this small village is on the edge of the West Coast National Park and has a 13km lagoon. The Main Beach and Shark Bay are the main locations with the annual Downwind Dash happening mid summer. Windtown Hotel and Spa is a great place to stay and has a kite shop.
2) Blouberg Kite Beach, Table View - check out the guys doing the big air. This is a surf beach and every year they hold the Red Bull King of the Air (KOTA) and those guys rock.
This video gives you a flavour of both locations - enjoy

Kitesurfing Blouberg, Cape town, South Africa Compilation
Kitesurfing experience in South Africa. Just above Cape town, there is a town called Blouberg. The surf is good but the kitesurf is better! Water temperature is about 12 degrees, but air is in summer around 30 degrees. Wind is about 20 knots SSE. I used a Best Waroo 08 9m2. I started kitesurfing one month before this compilation was made.
