Canadian Museum of History 2016-2017 travelling exhibitions
The Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum are hitting the road in 2016–2017, with six travelling exhibitions bringing stories of Canadian feats, both great and small, to 19 communities across the country. Terry Fox — Running to the Heart of Canada recreates the heroic 1980 Marathon of Hope. Snow and Lace Up! dig deep into our wintry traditions. Kids Celebrate! introduces children to holidays from various cultural traditions. And Fighting in Flanders and Witness explore aspects of Canadian involvement in the First World War. Our Museums are coming to you, sharing our past wherever you live. The Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum are in Gatineau, in Ottawa, on the web, on social media and in your community.

Présentation de l'histoire du Canada et de la contribution du pays à la défense occidentale et à la communauté atlantique.
Le court métrage « Images du Canada » fait partie d’une série initialement intitulée « Know your Allies », puis rebaptisée « The Atlantic Community Series ». L’objectif de cette série était d’aider le public de chacun des pays de l’Alliance à se familiariser avec les autres pays membres, ainsi que de mettre en lumière les contributions des différents pays aux traditions politiques et culturelles occidentales, à la reconstruction économique et à la défense des Alliés dans le cadre de l’OTAN.
Produits entre 1954 et 1956 en coopération avec le Service d'information de l'OTAN, ces courts métrages ont été financés par les pouvoirs publics des États-Unis dans le cadre du plan Marshall et ont été distribués par l’OTAN. Ils ont été largement diffusés, parfois même au cinéma et à la télévision. Certains ont été traduits et distribués avec l’aide des pays concernés.
Les articles « My country and NATO » racontent l’histoire de chacun des pays membres de l’OTAN en s’appuyant sur une sélection de documents d’archives tout à fait uniques qui vous feront remonter le temps.

Want to develop a school program on energy? This month’s hangout will give you a behind the scenes view of program development, and the opportunity to be an active participant. During this workshop, we will look at some provincial science curriculum, and design demonstrations and activity stations that will eventually become a full school program related to energy for elementary school students.
You are welcome to join us! You can participate actively or sit back and watch. If you’d like to be on screen, please send us a note and we will send you a link to join as a participant. So far, we have participants from the Kitimat Library and Archives, Leduc #1, the Oil Museum of Canada, Green Learning, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, the Canada Science and Technology museum, with room for a few more!

WW2 Catalina PBY-5a Flying Boat - Huge Engine Rumble
The New Zealand Catalina Preservation Society is focused on the preservation and operation of New Zealand's only PBY-5A Catalina twin-engine World War Two Canso amphibious flying boat, ZK-PBY.
The aim of the Society is to preserve, in airworthy condition, a WWII-veteran Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina flying boat, similar to the aircraft operated by the Royal New Zealand Air Force between 1943 to 1953, as an Aviation Heritage project for the community benefit of New Zealand.
Fifty-six Catalina's (NZ4001-NZ4056) were operated by the Royal New Zealand Air Force between 1943 and 1953. Provided under lend/lease arrangements these were a mix of non-amphibious Consolidated and Boeing built aircraft. They were engaged in anti-submarine, shipping escort, air-sea rescue and transport roles.
The Catalina's operated with No's 5 and 6 SQNs and No3 OTU, based at Hobsonville (Auckland, New Zealand) and various points in the Pacific. Unlike many other lend-lease aircraft, the Catalina's continued to be operated after World War II because they filled a vital role in South Pacific communications.
This aircraft is a Canadian Vickers built Canso (c/n CV-357) which arrived in NZ on October 26th, 1994. This aircraft was originally delivered to the Royal Canadian Air Force in March 1944, and operated on anti-submarine duties until it was struck off charge in June 1947.
The aircraft is shown here during a display at Ardmore Aerodrome, Auckland, New Zealand.

Athabasca oil sands
The Athabasca oil sands are large deposits of bitumen or extremely heavy crude oil, located in northeastern Alberta, Canada – roughly centred on the boomtown of Fort McMurray. These oil sands, hosted primarily in the McMurray Formation, consist of a mixture of crude bitumen, silica sand, clay minerals, and water. The Athabasca deposit is the largest known reservoir of crude bitumen in the world and the largest of three major oil sands deposits in Alberta, along with the nearby Peace River and Cold Lake deposits.
Together, these oil sand deposits lie under 141,000 square kilometres of boreal forest and muskeg and contain about 1.7 trillion barrels of bitumen in-place, comparable in magnitude to the world's total proven reserves of conventional petroleum. The International Energy Agency lists the economically recoverable reserves, at 2006 prices and modern unconventional oil production technology, to be 178 billion barrels, or about 10% of these deposits. These contribute to Canada's total proven reserves being the third largest in the world, after Saudi Arabia and Venezuela's Orinoco Belt.
