Temple of Astarte Trip, Kition, Larnaca, Cyprus
The Temple of Astarte in Kition, Larnaca, Cyprus,
The archaeological area of Kition consists of two sites: Kathari and Pampoula. It is located within the limits of the modern city of Larnaka. The earliest phases of human habitation and religious worship in Kition, are found at the site of Kathari.
Five consecutive temples and workshops for the smelting of copper, have already been excavated and are dated from the end of the 13th to the end of the 11th century B.C. This corresponds to the Late Bronze Age and the Geometric period, during which the city of Kition flourished and was inhabited by Mycenean Achaeans. Following their destruction, a magnificent temple identified as that of Astarte, was erected in their place by the Phoenicians, sometime around 850 B.C. The temple was used until the beginning of the 3rd century B.C., when it was also destroyed.
During the Archaic and Classical period, the temple was extended to include many rooms, open courts with stoas and shrines, offering hearths and industrial installations for the smelting of copper. The variety of finds indicates that a number of deities was worshipped at Kition, the most significant being the Phoenician deities Astarte (equivalent of Aphrodite), Melkart (equivalent of Heracles), and Esmoun (equivalent of Asclepius), as well as the Egyptian deities Hathor, Bes and Horus.

Αρχαία στην παραλία Θεοτόκος - Ancient ruins on Theotokos beach

Alashiya
'''Alashiya''', also spelled '''Alasiya''', was a state which existed in the Middle and Late Bronze Ages, and was situated somewhere in the Eastern Mediterranean. It was a major source of goods, especially copper, for Ancient Egypt and other states in the Ancient Near East. It is referred to in a number of the surviving texts and is now thought to be the ancient name of Cyprus, or an area of Cyprus. This was confirmed by the scientific analysis performed in the Tel Aviv University of the clay tablets which were sent from Alashiya to other rulers.

Ancient Kition
Kition (Kittim) is mentioned in the Bible. Perhaps Noah's great-grandson, Kittim, is its founder. Alternatively, it was named after, Cethimus, who owned the island Cethima (Cyprus). The ancient city belongs to the late Bronze Age and it was discovered by the British in 1879. In the 12th century BC it was surrounded by cyclopean fortress walls, and the culture had Mycenaean influence. Later, Kition was controlled by the Phoenicians, who built the temple of Astarte (Aphrodite), the largest one discovered so far. Its area is 27x9m, and the sanctuary is 22x2.5m. It is an elevation where statues of three deities and an altar used to be. There also used to be an industrial plant for copper smelting. Resheph, the god of fire and lightning, war, the patron of arms used to be city’s god. The city is the birthplace of Zeno of Citium, the founder of the ancient Greek stoic philosophical school. Most of the Kition artefacts are in the British Museum, however many are in the local Pierides museum.

Excavation on Cyprus in 2012
In May and June of 2012, the Pyla-Koutsopetria Archaeological Project (Dr. William Caraher, Dr. David Pettegrew, and Dr. R. Scott Moore) charged me with trench supervisor duties for an excavation unit located outside of Larnaca, Cyprus. Here in Pettegrew's video is a wall emerging out of the excavation unit from a 3rd-century BCE Hellenistic coastal fortification. This site is contemporaneous with Alexander the Great and Zeno, the Stoic from Citium. Within the excavation unit, I am to the right, and sorting out the stratigraphic layers with a student and colleague. The student and colleague to my left continues uncovering bedrock at an industrial pace.
