Kitsuki Castle - Oita - 杵築城 - 4K Ultra HD
First built in 1394 by the fourth daimyo Kizuki Yorinao and located in the city of Kitsuki in Oita prefecture, the Kitsuki Castle is, believe it or not, Japan’s smallest and obviously cuttest caste!
Belonging to the Kitsuki Clan, and for almost fourteen generations and until the end of the 16th century, today’s castle is unfortunately not the very same built back in 1394 and has suffered many natural disasters over the centuries and it is only in 1970 that it was decided to rebuild the castle from the ground up.
Because of its size the best way to enjoy the castle is either from the air or far away from one of Kitsuki city’s many vantage points over this small, yet beautiful castle.
This video was made in Cooperation with Kitsuki Tourism Organization as well as Tourism Oita.

The city of Kitsuki (杵築), in Oita Prefecture is located on the southern side of the Kunisaki Peninsula. The city is nicknamed a sandwich castle town because of the samurai districts on both the north and south hills with the commercial district in the center.
Kitsuki Castle is located in the eastern end, near the coast facing out into the Seto Inland Sea. Originally built in 1394, the castle suffered damages from earthquakes and a severe storm in 1596 and 1597. The castle was not reconstructed until 1970. Currently a three-tiered main keep, it is said to be the smallest castle in Japan. A small museum displaying local artifacts is located within the castle keep.

A Very Special Little Castle Town in Southern Japan
Kitsuki castle festival Daimyo-Gyoretsu
Kitsuki is a fantastically preserved feudal town that has gone to great lengths to keep the atmosphere unspoiled by modern life (the usual spaghetti of overhead power lines are kept underground). The town is famous for its unique topography, preserved samurai residences, the smallest castle in Japan and a festival in May that recreates the traditional entrance into the town by feudal lords coming back from residence in the Capital Edo.
During the Edo period feudal lords were required to spend alternate years living in the capital Edo (the Sankin-Koutai system). This required them to travel back and forth every two years, with a huge entourage that parade through towns on the way. While traveling through towns the procession walked at a snails pace, reminding the common folk to bend the knee by shouting out shita-ni (literally: down!) at each step. In reality only the Shogun used such words; lesser feudal lords used phrases like get out of the way, and stand aside! (although when in sight of the lord himself, people still have to prostrate themselves until he passed).

Japan: Oita Trip [Kitsuki & Usuki]
Last month my husband and I took a trip to Oita prefecture, where we explored the cities of Kitsuki and Usuki. Kitsuki had the old, historical slopes and Kitsuki Castle and Usuki offered Rekishi no Michi (Road of History) and Usuki Seki Butsu (The Usuki Stone Buddhas).
Note: I'm sorry for occasional shaking camera and bad sound. My new camera is a lot more sensitive than my old camera when it comes to movement, but the microphone records at low volume. This is things I have to work on for the next videos.
Thank you to all the people who have subscribed lately.

Kitsuki City - Strolling around a samurai town wearing a Kimono
The city of Kitsuki (杵築) is located on the southern side of the Kunisaki Peninsula. The city center is sometimes referred to as a sandwich castle town, because of its interesting topography of having two samurai districts on hills north and south respectively, sandwiching a commercial district in the middle. The districts combined measure about 500 meters north-south and 1.5 kilometers east-west, with Kitsuki Castle standing at the eastern end, close to the coast facing the Seto Inland Sea.
Successful efforts have been made to keep these historic districts free of distractions such as power lines and unsightly signs, thus preserving their authentic atmospheres. The beautiful town features multiple photogenic slopes and samurai residences that are open to the public. Amiable locals look forward to engage with visitors, making it a friendly environment for tourists.
A combination ticket for 800 yen provides admission to all of them. At Warakuan near the Historical Museum, visitors can rent kimono for around 3000 yen, dress in them and stroll the quaint town, taking pictures reminiscent of past centuries.
