Back to the Banks
I have never really been fond of the beach. The sand got in your shorts and shoes. The salt air made everything sticky. When you swam in the ocean, the salt water burned your eyes and left a bad taste in your mouth. Growing up, I spent many a summer at the beach. Whether it was at a little known Minnesott Beach on the Neuse River at my grandparent's cottage, or camping on the tourist filled Myrtle Beach with my parents, I can almost say I grew up at the beach, or at least near the beach. As much fun as that might sound, I really didn't like the beach. Once I had kids of my own and we started going places, it got to the point that I almost loathed the beach. I avoided it almost at all cost. The times that I did go, I went out of my way to avoid the sand and salt water.
But as I have grown older, I have come to realize that I only loathed the beach because I didn't really understand it. I never took the time to get to know it for what it really was and the beauty that it truly holds. I never had the foresight to look beyond the things I disliked about it and immerse myself into the wondrous place it really is. Paddling in the basins, lagoons, sounds and coastal backwaters has reconnected me with the beach. It brought back a flood of memories from my childhood that I wouldn't trade for all the riches in the world. It has allowed me to see the beach and the ocean with new eyes and accept the fact that in everything you dislike, you can always find something to like and in everything you like there are things you dislike. (I still hate sand in my shorts and I swear sand fleas were put here by God to torture us) I have been to the coastal waters three times this year, and more times in the last year than I have in the previous 25. It is becoming one of my favorite places to visit.
On Valentine's weekend Ladybug and I found ourselves again traveling by ferry across the Pamlico Sound to that thin ribbon of sand dunes and tidal marsh on the Outer Banks. This time we were on a mission to Ocracoke to pick up a kayak I purchased for Ladybug from an outfitter on the island. It afforded us a chance to see the Ocracoke Lighthouse and visit a part of the Banks that we had not been to in a long time. We spent the remainder of our weekend in Kitty Hawk and Manteo before making a quick stop on the way home in Plymouth to scout out an upcoming trip in April. Even though the weather really didn't cooperate with us to the point that we were able to get in a little paddling, we still had a wonderful weekend making memories that I will tuck away along with all the rest I have that I wouldn't trade for anything.

SandBoarding the Largest Sand Dunes on the East Coast
HLN's Meteorologist Bob Van Dillen travels to the Outer Banks of North Carolina and links up with the Kitty Hawk Kites company to experience the little known activity of Sand Boarding!
Bob has a history of surfing and skiing but tackling this challenge at Jockey's Ridge State Park in Nags Head was greater than anticipated.
A brisk breeze off the coast, mixed with inexperience made for a fun and exhilarating new activity to conquer.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore & the Lighthouse - Travels With Phil
Cape Hatteras National Seashore is a beautiful example of offshore or barrier islands. It stretches for many miles along the Atlantic coast of North Carolina. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is an icon. It is the tallest brick lighthouse in America. Going up the 269 steps was worth the view at the top. Just a few miles offshore are the Diamond Shoals. They are a twelve mile long sandbar which has led to the sinking of literally hundreds of ships. This is why the area is called the Graveyard of the Atlantic. It is about 60 miles south of Kitty Hawk where the Wright Brothers first flew. - Travels with Phil copyrighted by Phil Konstantin -

Spotlight on the OBX: Outer Banks Fishing Piers
With all the Outer Banks has to offer - beach, wild horses, Wright Brothers, Black Beard the Pirate, surfing, fishing, Jockey's Ridge, beach driving, art, seafood, nature preserves, amazing wildlife...the list seems endless - the OBX fishing piers are often overlooked.
Well, all the piers are the same, right?...long wooden structures with some good fishing and great views, but if you've seen one, you've seen them all.
Not so fast. You may be surprised at just how much variety the Outer Banks fishing piers offer, and with the arrival of the new Jennette's Pier, the piers have been taken to an entirely new level of fun, education, amazing views, and world-class fishing.
For today's installment, we're going to turn the Spotlight on the Outer Banks Fishing Piers.
The five fishing piers located on the northern beaches of the Outer Banks are Kitty Hawk, Avalon, Nags Head, Jennette's and Outer Banks Fishing Pier, all of which are unique.
The Kitty Hawk Pier is now privately owned and part of the Hilton Garden Inn. The pier is still available for daily fishing, and the gorgeous pier house can be booked through the Hilton for private events...an awesome spot for an Outer Banks wedding!
The Avalon Pier is located on the Oceanfront in Kill Devil Hills, at Mile Post 6. It is 696 feet long. The pier is usually open from 5:00 am -- 2:00 am during the summer months. During the Spring and Fall, they open at 6:00 am and close when things slow down which is usually right before 10:00 pm. They sell all kinds of bait including bloodworms, squid, mullet, shrimp, and artificial lures. They also rent tackle. When you enter the Avalon Pier, you almost feel like you are stepping back in time...in a great way. It feels like the OBX from the 70's...complete with an old-school arcade!
The Nags Head Fishing Pier offers a great fishing pier as well as a bait & tackle shop for all of your fishing needs. Also on site is a The Pier House Restaurant and The Pier Cottages. There are 6 cottages available ranging from 1-bedroom to 4-bedrooms. Daily rates are available for the cottages, though there is a 3-night minimum stay. This pier is great for fishing or taking in the views, but the highlight for me is the breakfast! Arguably the best OBX breakfast spot. 1. Because the breakfast is delicious (classic diner style) and 2. Because you can't beat the view overlooking the ocean!
Jennette's Pier, the oldest fishing pier on North Carolina's Outer Banks, was built in 1939. This historic ocean landmark has weathered dozens of hurricanes and nor'easters over the past six decades.
Now wwned by the North Carolina Aquarium Society, the oldest fishing pier on the Outer Banks provides a great fishing experience for the entire family. The main exhibit, Giants of the Sea, showcases state-record trophy fish mounts and five aquariums with indigenous fish species on display. The pier also houses an outpost for the North Carolina Aquarium Education Department, which offers a wide variety of coastal educational opportunities for children of all ages. Aquarium education classes run Monday -- Friday between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Last but not least, the Outer Banks Fishing Pier is open 24 hours a day. Daily, weekend and weekly passes are available, as well as group rates and senior citizen discounts. Bait and tackle are available at the Pier, as well as rentals of tackle, bicycles, umbrellas, chairs and boogie boards. Fishing charters are also available through Outer Banks Fishing Unlimited.
I'll zip it so you can enjoy the tour...

Exploring The Outer Banks of North Carolina
The Outer Banks of North Carolina, also known at the OBX, is a place I’ve always wanted to visit for I’ve heard there are some striking similarities in the landscape there and to the east coast island I call home (Nantucket).
My friend Kirsten Alana and I flew into Norfolk, about a two hour drive down, to explore Dare Country in the Outer Banks for four days.
While you can’t control the weather, you can control how much fun you have in it. We found a great amount to do in the Outer Banks in all the elements: sunshine, grey skies, or sprinkles from the sky. Because we were kind of all over the place, I’m going to give you my favorites from the trip.
There’s so much to see and do from Duck all the way down to Hatteras Island.
We spent our first two nights in Manteo at the Tranquil Inn. One of my favorite activities was boring a sailboat just out back and sailing the Roanoke Sound with the husband and wife team behind Sail The Outer Banks.
Making the sea to table connection, we visited Oneal’s Seafood at the Southern end of Roanoke Island one rainy morning and watched the fisherman offload their catch.
A visit to the Outer Banks would not be complete without a local brew - We sampled four at wind powered Outer Banks Brewing Station in Kill Devil Hills.
Climb the 219 stairs to the top of Bodie Island Lighthouse in Cape Hatteras National Seashore and National Parks Service in Nags Head. The interior on the climb up is just as photogenic as the views are when you reach the top.
Up in Duck, stay ta the Sanderling Resort and do not miss having a long dinner at Kimball’s Kitchen. On property, bike, SUP, kayak, or laze around the pool and hot tub. Not far away, get an organic body treatment at the Aqua Restaurant + Spa. I loved my facial!!!
And of course seeing how sea turtles are rehabilitated was a special treat inside the Aquarium.
The trip wouldn’t be complete without hopping on a white horse and riding with Hatteras Island Horseback Riding.
