Description
The Kiwengwa Caves are several caves located in the Kiwengwa-Pongwe Forest Reserve. The reserve lies between the town Kiwengwa and Pongwe on the east coast of Zanzibar. One of the caves, Mchekeni Coral Caves, was developed with a concrete path to enter the caves. A reception center has been built and there are rangers, daily from 10 am - 5 pm. A café and a souvenir shop were build as well, but are not yet operational. But the caves are officially open and there is a guided tour for US$ 3 pp for non- citizens.(That means:no reduction for residents. Please do not try to haggle) Torches are provided by the rangers. But if you have a torch/headlamp bring your own as well.
The Kiwengwa Caves are noted for their cave fauna, including six species of bats and many insects. Two caves, the North (250 metres long) and South Cave (about 200 m long), are open to the public, but the East Cave is reserved to the wildlife. The guided tour takes about 1 1/2 hours.
The Kiwengwa Ecotourism Project was started in 2005 by the Department of Commercial Crops, Fruits and Forestry of Zanzibar, the Turku Geographical Society of Finland, and the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). The idea is to conserve the forest areas and biodiversity by supporting the local communities. The main problem for the forest is the destruction through clearing by the locals who must make their living from the land. By providing alternative means of income, especially ones who do nt include nature destruction, the program offers an alternative. The entrance fee supports the project.

Kiwengwa is a village on the Tanzanian island of Unguja, part of Zanzibar. It is located on the northeast coast between the villages of Pongwe and Pwani Mchangani. It is also connected by road to Kinyasini, which lies eight kilometres to the west.
Kiwengwa Beach the most beautiful beach on the north eastern side of Zanzibar island.
It is a splendid beach. Many hotels and resorts are along this stretch of lovely white sand beach, but it never feels crowded.
The water is clear and warm, the sunrises are spectacular and when the tide goes out you can walk for miles - what a wonderful paradise.

You won’t find these caves listed on trip advisor or any major travel website, it’s a local attraction. We visited the caves with a local guide. He navigated us through them by flashlight and recanted tales of villagers hiding in them during WWII from the Germans. They were very neat, but you can’t be freaked out by bats as many flew around with the sudden light on them.
