Kiyomizu-dera in Autumn - Miyama, Fukuoka - Japan As It Truly Is - 清水寺 - 福岡県みやま市
A look at Kiyomizu-dera at the height of autumn, one of the best times to see it. Of all the seasons, you can see the best colors in autumn, and many people come here for a quiet escape. To clarify, NO this is not the famous Kiyomizudera in Kyoto with the daily stampede of tourists rushing through. There are actually several Kiyomizudera in Japan (same spelling and Chinese characters) but this one is far, far off the beaten trail where few tourists ever go, and unknown to the tourist books or guides.
It lies in Miyama City, Fukuoka, about 10km east of Yanagawa.
What makes this place so special is especially in autumn the colors explode in countless shades of red, gold and orange, and not even many Japanese know about it.
If you want a peaceful retreat from the chores and stress of life you could rarely do better than this beautiful and natural gem.

Many temples often hold special night openings during specific seasons where the grounds and buildings are beautifully lit and you can enjoy the views in a completely different way. Kiyomizu-dera is spectacular anytime, but there was something incredible about the lights on the autumn leaves with the lights of Kyoto in the background. Definitely worth checking out if you can brave the cold during the season!

Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺) Temple, Kyoto City
Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺） or Kiyomizu Temple is located on the side of the Higashiyama Mountains in eastern Kyoto City. Kiyomizudera is a very famous temple, not only in Kyoto city but throughout Japan. This temple is known for it's large hanging platform from a mountain edge.
Hence the expression take the plunge at Kiyomizudera that this temple is famously known for. It does not mean that people should be jumping off the temple's platform but it urges people to follow their dreams and goals.
This temple is close to the city center and is very popular with tourists both foreign and Japanese.

Miyama: Traditional Japanese thatched roof village
While the Kayabuki no Sato at Shirakawa-go is much more well known, if you're around the Kyoto area, Miyama has its very own example of these traditional country houses. The village is a little hard to get to via public transport and its recommended you go by car, but the scenery and the drive up there is stunning.

Day 5 in Japan!
Today we travelled from Osaka to Kyoto with my friends mother and brother. We visited Fushimi Inari Shrine and climbed halfway to the top of the mountain. We had lunch on floor 10 or 11 of the Kyoto Station Building. We then headed to Kiyomizu Dera. We found a Studio Ghibli shop tucked away in the street leading to Kiyomizu Dera. We then explored the gardens at Heian Shrine, and enjoyed the night time illumination at the Shoren-in Temple.

Kiyomizu-Dera Love Stones - Jishu Shrine, Kyoto, Japan
It is said that people who can successfully navigate between the two love stones found in the Jishu Shrine with their eyes closed will find true love. I found a few people trying their luck at the top of the hill, and decided to film a few tries.
I also managed to make it across... perhaps that holds good things for me in the near future? :)

OKITAMA TRADITIONAL CRAFT⑬【Miyama Japanese-paper(Shirataka Town)】
The snowy climate nurtured this strong and flexible type of Japanese paper, which was used extensively by the Yonezawa Clan as their designated paper.
Papermaking has been popular as an off-season job for farmers in the Miyama district along the Sanebuchi River of the Asahi Mountain Range since the Muromachi period (1338-1573).
During the Edo period (1603-1868) Lord Uesugi Yozan, the 9th lord of the Yonezawa Clan, encouraged farmers to grow Kozo (a type of tree providing material for making paper). At the height of production almost half of the 100 households in the area were making paper. Even now traditional techniques are preserved.
