Kiyomizu-dera temple and gardens, Kyoto, Japan travel video
Kiyomizu-dera is the most popular temple in all of Kyoto, Japan. The main hall is the most spectacular single item here. It’s up on large wooden stilts and designated as a national treasure.
Large verandas and main halls like this were constructed at many popular sites in the past to accommodate large numbers of pilgrims.
And then we have the views looking out across from the main hall into downtown.
Looking up towards the temple which is up on the hillside.
An old tradition that held that if you could survive a 13 meter jump from the stage, your wish would be granted. Over 200 people jumped, most of them surviving, but that practice is now prohibited.
You can also buy good luck charms and various kiosks here and omikugi which are the paper fortunes, and incense and various other talismans.
Shoppers will be kept quite busy at the various kiosks and you can also get a bite to eat at some of the food stands.
The word Kiyomizu means clear water, or pure water. The Otowa waterfall runs off the nearby hills in three channels of water that fall into a fountain. Visitors can catch and drink the water, which is believed to have wish-granting powers. And it’s said you will gain health, longevity, and success in studies by drinking from the three different streams.
These typical incense burners offer a smoke that's designed to chase away the evil spirits.
The temple is actually so old that it predates Kyoto itself. It dates back to the 700s, before Kyoto was founded as a city. Of course the structures have been rebuilt numerous times since then. Most of the structures have been rebuilt numerous times since then. There are some 30 buildings here and most were constructed in the early Edo period, in the early 1630s.
And the different altars and shrines within the temple grounds -- Images of the Buddha here and there in the different altars and shrines within the temple grounds

A Tour of Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto
Kiyomizu-dera, one of the most famous temples in Kyoto, was built at the end of the 8th century. The main hall was constructed in the 17th century and is known for its location which overhangs a cliff. With an area of 130,000 square meters, the site contains many important cultural properties, including buildings and Buddhist images. Since its foundation in 778, most of the buildings have been destroyed by fire over ten times and was rebuilt time and time again.

JAPANESE Tofu Hotpot FEAST + Kiyomizu-Dera Temple Tour | Kyoto, Japan
There are few things more magical than exploring a new place and having your mind blown at every turn. That’s exactly what happened during my trip to Japan in January of 2019. I spent 12 amazing days traveling around the island nation and during that time, Japan became one of my all-time favorite destinations. Find out why I love this country so much by following my Japanese travel and food vlog series!
My Film Making Kit ►
On my second and final day in Kyoto, I wanted to explore more of this ancient, historical city and, of course, try more amazing Japanese cuisine! Come along with me as I take you on a fascinating tour of Kiyomizu Dera Temple and then join me for a delicious tofu hotpot lunch!
I started at a very touristy street that was lined with restaurants and souvenir shops, that sold everything from hats to decorative fans to elegant chopsticks! On my way to find some ice cream, I tried some delicious mochis as I made my way through the crowd. I tried a black sesame with honey ice cream cone (300 Yen/$2.69 U.S.). It was nutty and sweet, with a crispy cone and a crunchy cracker on top. It was so good and exactly what I needed!
My next stop was Kiyomizu-dera Temple, a huge Buddhist temple in eastern Kyoto that was founded by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro in the year 778 A.D. during the early Heian period, though the buildings that currently stand on the site were built in 1633 by Tokugawa Iemitsu. In addition to being a gorgeous Buddhist temple, Kiyomizu-dera Temple is one of the 17 Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto UNESCO World Heritage sites in and around Kyoto.
No nails were used in the construction of the temple complex, which includes a stunning main hall that contains a large veranda and some of the most amazing woodwork I’ve ever seen in my life, a pagoda, the Otowa-no-taki waterfall, a matchmaking shrine and Torii gate, and more! The temple overlooks Kyoto, so you also get some spectacular views of the city. It costs 400 Yen/$3.59 U.S. to enter the temple, which is such a bargain because there are so many things to see and do there.
Just note that you should probably be in good shape before visiting this temple; getting around it and climbing the stairs is a lot of exercise. I got winded climbing the stairs and I’m in good shape. It was worth it, though. Exploring historical sites is my favorite thing to do when I travel. I can’t get enough of it!
After debating what I wanted to have for lunch, I decided to go for some traditional tofu hotpot at Shimizu-Zyuntadashi-Okabeya. There, I tried their Yudofu tofu hot pot (2,160 Yen/$19.39 U.S.) and cold sake (670 Yen/$6.01 U.S.).
The Yudofu comes with tofu with wasabi, cubed tofu, tea, rice, pickles, ginger, vegetable tempura, fried tofu on a stick, and more. The sake was nice and cold and came in a small container.
The tofu with soy sauce and herbs was light, soft, and spongy, and so delicious! The pickles were great as well, including one that was like a pickled kelp. The vegetable tempura (which included eggplant, shishito peppers, and sweet potato) was very nice and lightly deep-fried with a light batter.
Next, I went with the fried tofu, which had a cheesy marmalade on top. The tofu wasn’t too soft and was pretty thick and extremely tasty, while the wasabi tofu was sweeter with a bit of spice. I also tried another, brownish tofu that was also kind of sweet, with a bit of garlic flavor as well as a really succulent shrimp.
That tofu meal wasn’t very big, but it was extremely filling! The entire meal came to 2,830 Yen/$25.40 U.S.
Then I went in search of some Kyoto coffee while walking along a pedestrian street of souvenir shops and old, traditional homes. I stopped at a cozy coffee shop called Garakuta, where I got a strong and delicious straight black, no-drip coffee, which was exactly what I needed to wake up after an eventful morning and afternoon!
I hope you loved this video of my mind-blowing tofu hotpot feast and visit to Kiyomizu Dera Temple. If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment below. Also please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss out on any of my upcoming travel and food videos!

JAPANESE Tofu Hotpot FEAST + Kiyomizu-Dera Temple Tour | Kyoto, Japan
Kiyomizu-Dera Temple + Higashiyama Street Food and Shopping Tour in Kyoto, Japan
While in Kyoto, Japan we went on a tour of Kiyomizu-Dera which is one of the top things to do while in Kyoto. Kiyomizu-Dera (清水寺, Kiyomizudera) means Pure Water Temple in Japanese and is one of the most popular temples in all of Japan. Of course, being located in Kyoto, one Japan's historical capitals, helps its cause. Kyoto is ladled with historical buildings and temples like Kiyomizu-dera. Unlike Tokyo, which was bombed during WW2, most of the city still retains its traditional Japanese flair. We also explored the neighbouring Higashiyama neighbourhood, which is a food and shopping wonder!
Kiyomizu-Dera was founded in either 778 or 780 and is named after the Otowa Waterfall. At first, the temple was associated with the Hosso sect of Buddhism until 1965 when it formed its very own Kita Hosso sect. One of the iconic images of the temple is that of its wooden stage that protrudes from its main hall. It is said that people used to attempt the jump down below and those who survived the fall were then blessed with good luck. I can see people surviving the fall, but I'm less than certain that the probably permanent consequences were worth any of the good luck gained. But never-mind my skepticism, moving on...
In the back of the Kiyomizu-dera temples lies the Jishu shrine, dedicated to love. Having relationship trouble? This might be the spot to cure your illness. At the bottom of the Kiyomizu-dera temple like the Otowa Waterfall which is divided in 3 separate streams. Visitors are free to cleanse themselves with the pure water from the waterfall, which is a typical Japanese tradition even at Shinto shrines.

KIYOMIZU DERA TEMPLE, Kyoto, Japan
This video is Part 6 of our 10 Days Fantastic Spring Holidays in Japan in May 2018. This part covers our visit to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, an independent Buddhist Temple in eastern Kyoto. Kiyomizu-dera, litterally Pure Water Temple is one of the most celebrated temples in Japan. It was founded in 780 on the site of the Otowan waterfall.
Walking around Higashiyama in Kyoto Japan - Kiyomizu-dera, Ninenzaka, Sannenzaka, Yasaka Pagoda 【4K】
Kyoto (京都市) was Japan's capital for over a thousand years, and was the center of Japanese art, religion, architecture and political power. The accumulated treasures of that long history are well preserved in the city today, making it one of Japan's most visited cities.
Higashiyama (東山区 meaning east mountain) is one of the eleven wards in the city of Kyoto, in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. Many of the locations central to the development of 15th-century Japanese culture known as Higashiyama Bunka are found here or in Sakyō-ku. Both the entertainment district of Gion in front of Yasaka Shrine, and the area around the stone-paved roads Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka that lead up to the World Heritage Kiyomizu-deraTemple, enjoy protected status to preserve the traditional style buildings.
Kiyomizu-dera Temple (清水寺) was built in the 8th century and was destroyed by fire. This temple was reconstructed in the 17th centruy to represent traditional structures in Kyoto.

A Day In Kyoto⎮Fushimi Inari Shrine & Kiyomizu Temple⎮Japan Trip 2018
Hi dear friends! Welcome to day four of the Japan travel diaries ♡ I hope you are enjoying the vlogs so far! On this morning, I woke up in beautiful Kyoto, and visited some incredible places that I have always desired to visit, which I am so beyond grateful for. Along with a friend I made at my hostel the night before, the first place we went to was Fushimi Inari Shrine, a must visit for anyone going to Kyoto. It was absolutely beautiful beyond words! We then headed for lunch at Vegans Cafe and Bar nearby, a nice walk from the shrine within the local neighbourhood. After that, we caught the bus to Kiyomizu Temple, yet again another incredible sightseeing spot that blew me away. We also tried some delicious vegan Japanese street food, and it's safe to say I was in mochi heaven afterwards :) There is truly so much to explore in Japan, and it already has a piece of my heart. I hope you are enjoying your day so far, and I am sending my love! xxx

Kiyomizudera, Kyoto - Letters from Japan
Kiyomizudera is located in easter Kyoto. If you’re coming directly from Kyoto station, the best way is to take the number 206 or 100 bus - then get off at either the Gojozaka or Kiyomizu-michi bus stops.
If you’re coming from Osaka or north Kyoto, you could take the Keihan line to the Gion Shijo station. From there, take bus number 85 to Higashiyama Yasui, Kiyomizu-mich, or Gojozaka stations.

Kiyomizudera, Kyoto in Cherry Blossom Season ???? 清水寺 ???? Japan As It Truly Is
Kiyomizudera is one of the icons of Kyoto, and here's one of the most beautiful times to see it. It's a must see for any Kyoto visit.
The history of Kiyomizudera goes back to 778 A.D. and it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The 13m high wooden stand (butai) that the main hall sits on is a striking feature, as well as the Otowa Waterfall with 3 fountains to drink from. One will bring you long life, another successful school life and the last a good love life. But it's bad luck to be greedy and drink from all three.
There is ongoing renovation work at Kiyomizudera which will be finished in March, 2020.
In addition to cherry blossom season (usually the start of April), the autumn colors (koyo) which often come in the second half of November is another beautiful time to see Kiyomizudera.
Kiyomizudera is one of the Top 3 places to see in Kyoto, the others being the Fushimi Inari Shrine and Kinkakuji (the Golden Pavilion).
Along with Kiyomizudera, many visit the Higashiyama area (Ninenzaka, Sannenzaka) to see a preserved historic street that keeps the old time Kyoto atmosphere.
