Ancient Corycus was a big city. It became parts of Seleucid Empire, Roman Empire, Byzantine Empire, Seljuks, Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, Oghuz Turks of Karamanids, and finally Ottoman Empire. In Turkish history, it is known as Prince Cem Sultan's departing point from Turkey in 1482 after his defeat in civil war on his way to Rome. After Cem's departure, Kızkalesi became the winter settlement of nomadic Turkmens tribes known as Ayaş. It is declared as a seat of township in 1992.

С руинами этого замка связана очень красивая легенда. Когда-то давно у короля города Корикос родилась дочь. Она выросла очень красивой и доброй девушкой, была любима как отцом, так и его подданными. Все было прекрасно до тех пор, пока в город не пришла гадалка. Она погадала королю, а затем посмотрела на ладонь принцессы и задрожала. Король испугался такой реакции и спросил в чем дело. Гадалке пришлось рассказать причину своей дрожи -- по ладони она увидела, что дочь короля еще в молодости умрет от укуса змеи. Старый король очень сильно расстроился и решил обмануть судьбу. Он приказал выстроить для принцессы крепость посреди моря, чтобы ни одна змея не смогла достигнуть ее. Дни шли за днями и король вместе с дочерью радовались жизни. Но однажды в крепость принесли как обычно корзину с фруктами. Девушка протянула руку к сочным плодам и была укушена змеей -- так сбылось предсказание гадалки.

Kızkalesi (English: Maiden's Castle) is a town in Mersin Province, Turkey. The town, known in Antiquity as Corycus or Korykos (( Ancient Corycus was a large city. It became part of the Seleucid Empire, the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the various Seljuk empires, the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, Beylik of Karaman, and finally the Ottoman Empire. In Turkish history, it is known as Prince Cem Sultan's departing point from Turkey in 1482 after his defeat in an Ottoman civil war on his way to Rome. After Cem’s departure, Kızkalesi became the winter settlement of nomadic Turkmen tribes known as Ayaş. It was declared as a seat of township in 1992 )).

Kızkalesi (Maiden's Castle, also known as Deniz kalesi) is a castle situated on a small island in Mersin Province of Turkey. Kızkalesi is a Mediterranean coastal town & it is a part of Erdemli district. Located in west of Erdemli and Mersin, 23 km to Erdemli and 60 km to Mersin. The total length of the rampart is 192 m. The south and the west walls are perpendicular to each other. The north and east sides are surrounded by a curved rampart.

According to Strabo, the island was used by the pirates in the
ancient age. But the castle was probably built by Alexios I
Komnenos of Byzantine Empire after the First Crusade. It was
extensively rebuilt in the 13th century by Leo I and at least one
subsequent monarch of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia.

Archaeological surveys published in 1982 and 1987 found that
the original Byzantine plan survives primarily at the south with the characteristic square towers. The Armenians rebuilt the north and west sides of the castle with their distinctive rusticated ashlar masonry (not spolia from the late antique city) and round towers.

They also put new facing stone on most of the Greek construction. Two Armenian inscriptions reportedly mention the rebuilding of this site by King Levon I (1206) and King Het‛um I (1251). The Armenians also built a barrel vaulted chapel inside the fort. The island was once connected to the mainland fort, Corycus castle, by a breakwater. The Armenians called this fortress Gorygos but as it was slowly conquered by Turkish Empires the name changed to Kizkalesi.

In the 14th century the Cilician Kingdom was on the verge of
collapse and in 1360 Peter I of Cyprus captured the island at the
request of the inhabitants. The castle was captured by İbrahim II
of Karaman in 1448 and by Gedik Ahmet Pasha of the Ottoman
Empire in 1471. (Karamanids was an Anatolian beylik ) King
Levon 1 is the same thing as King Leo 1.
