About the museum
Founded in 1973, the Reykjavík Art Museum is the largest visual art institution in Iceland. Its mission to present contemporary art in its many manifestations is carried out through diverse programs at the museum's three venues: Hafnarhus, Kjarvalsstadir, and Asmundarsafn. Architecture has been a part of the museum programs since 1993.

Kjarvalsstaðir voru teknir í notkun árið 1973 en höfðu þá verið í byggingu frá árinu 1966. Arkitekt er Hannes Kr. Davíðsson en þetta er fyrsta byggingin á Íslandi sem sérstaklega er hönnuð fyrir myndlist. Auk tímabundinna sýninga á Kjarvalsstöðum eru þar eru reglulega sýningar á verkum Jóhannesar S. Kjarvals (1885-1972). Kjarval skipar sérstakan sess í íslenskri menningar- og listasögu sem einn ástsælasti listamaður þjóðarinnar fyrr og síðar.

Á Kjarvalsstöðum er safnverslun þar sem boðið er upp á úrval innlendra og erlendra listaverkabóka og sýningarskráa sem safnið hefur gefið út í gegnum árin. Þar er einnig til sölu ýmis gjafavara frá KRAUMI, gjafakort og eftirprentanir af kunnum listaverkum. Einnig afsteypur af verkum Ásmundar Sveinssonar. Verslunin er opin á opnunartíma safnsins.

Johannes Sveinsson Kjarval (15 October 1885 – 13 April 1972) was an Icelandic painter. He is by many considered one of the most important artists of Iceland.
Born in poverty, he was adopted and as a young man worked as a fisherman. However, he spent every spare time drawing and painting and managed to learn basics from artist Ásgrímur Jónsson. At age 27 with financial support from fishermen and the Icelandic Confederation of Labour he passed an entrance examination and was admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts for higher education in the arts where he completed his studies. During the Copenhagen years he became acquainted with various styles including impressionism, expressionism and cubism but he also became an accomplished draughtsman. Later he also took shorter trips to France and Italy.
Kjarval was a prolific painter, leaving thousands of drawings and paintings after a long life. The paintings vary greatly in style and frequently mix different styles into a very personal style. Although not surreal, some of his works include absurd and symbolist elements mixing elves and myths into landscape. Many of his works include Icelandic landscape and lava formation but many of his landscape paintings are partially "cubist" and abstract with his focus on zooming on the closest ground and less the impressive mysterious mountains in the background. Later in his life his art frequently also included abstract painting.
Because of the unique mix of styles, it is an oversimplification to classify him has a landscape painter. His work includes expressionist, abstract, cubist, landscape and portrait paintings and drawings - and his "style promiscuity" was highly original as the man himself was. He was a highly original modernizer of his time and still remains quite unique among Icelandic and world painters.[1] In 1958 he was awarded the Prince Eugen Medal by the King of Sweden.
In Reykjavík, one of three buildings belonging to the Reykjavík Art Museum is called Kjarvalsstaðir and presents Kjarval's works alongside temporary exhibitions.
He is depicted on the Icelandic 2000 króna banknote.

The Reykjavik Art Museum has three collections of works by individual artists: Asmundur Sveinsson, Johannes S. Kjarval and Erró. The Museum is also in charge of the General art collection of the city of Reykjavik as well as most of the outdoor sculptures.

About the artist
Asmundur Sveinsson was one of the pioneers of sculpture in Iceland. He studied at the Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, under the guidance of the sculptor Carl Milles. Early on he was exposed to the traditional view that sculpture should be part of the urban environment. After completing his studies in 1926 he moved to Paris where he lived for three years. The city was then the uncontested centre of contemporary art in Europe and his stay there influenced him no less than his formal education.
Throughout his life, Sveinsson remained loyal to his belief that art should be for the people and have its place among them. He was called the poet of the people in the field of art and undoubtedly this ideal was rooted in his philosophy of life no less than in the traditions of sculpture. Most of his sculptures were conceived as works for public spaces, an integral part of their environment or designed for utility.

The Asmundur Sveinsson Collection
Asmundur Sveinsson was one of the pioneers of Icelandic sculpture.
The Asmundur Sveinsson collection contains works that span the whole career of the artist and clearly show how his artistic vision developed throughout his life. Among the oldest are sculptures that he created as a student at the State Academy in Sweden. Later came the grand masterpieces that praise the Icelandic common people, folk-tales and nature. Finally the collection has a number of abstract works, that the artist created in the last decades of his life.
Asmundur Sveinsson donated his house and his collection to the City of Reykjavik after his day.

A interview with Árni Sigfússon the mayor of Reykjanesbær
Víkingaheimar is the home of the Viking Ship Íslendingur (the Icelander). Built in 1996, Icelander is an exact replica of the famous Gokstad ship, a remarkable archaeological find of an almost completely intact Viking ship, excavated in Norway in 1882.
Vikingaheimar is also a home of a portion of the Viking millennium exhibition produced by the Smithsonian Institution Vikings: The North Atlantic Saga. This exhibition sheds light into the Norse settlement and explorations of unknown lands.
These two fine projects, both celebrating Iceland's central role in the discovery of North America 1000 years ago by the Norse Vikings, have now found a permanent home in Vikingaheimar ,a spectacular modern building, situated right by the Faxafloi bay in the town of Reykjanes and can be easily spotted from the main road between the international airport and Reykjavík.
Vikingaheimar is the home of the Viking Ship Íslendingur (the Icelander). Built in 1996, Icelander is an exact replica of the famous Gokstad ship, a remarkable archaeological find of an almost completely intact Viking ship, excavated in Norway in 1882.
Captain Gunnar Marel Eggertsson was inspired to build a replica of this beautiful ship based on his own background as shipbuilder and sailor. He copied the original nail for nail. In the year 2000, with a grant from the Leifur Eiríksson Commission of Iceland, he sailed from Iceland to New York, a journey of 4200 nautical miles. His voyage brought world-wide attention to Leif Eiriksson's and Bjarni Herjólfsson's discovery of America, dated, according to the Icelandic sagas, to exactly 1000 A.D.
Building Icelander was an extraordinary achievement; at 23 metres long, 5.25 meters wide and with a holding capacity of 80 tons (by modern standards), it took 2 years of effort. The sail is 130 square meters and the mast is 18 meters in length. Made from pine and oak, scholars believe this was the most common type of ship in use during the Viking Age.
Vikingaheimar is also a home a portion of the Viking millennium exhibition produced by the Smithsonian Institution. Launched by King Harald V of Norway during the summer of 2000, and with a State Dinner at the White House, Vikings: The North Atlantic Saga then traveled to 6 other cities throughout North America. This exhibition, like the sailing of Icelander, celebrated the 1000 year anniversary of the Viking discovery of North America, shedding light on the latest scholarly research into the Norse settlement and explorations of unknown lands.
Gunnar Marel and his crew of 8 left Iceland on Icelandic Independence day, the 17th of June, with a send off from the Prime Minister of Iceland. When it finally arrived in New York on October 5th-where it was greeted by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and Mayor Rudolf Guiliani--the ship had made stops at 22 harbors. In addition to the festivities with kings, queens, presidents and mayors, when the ship arrived, visitors also streamed to see it while it was docked at each location, all told about 450,000 people came on board.
These two fine projects, both celebrating Iceland's central role in the discovery of North America 1000 years ago by the Norse Vikings, have now found a permanent home in Vikinga Aldan (Viking Wave), the central building on the Vikingaheimar grounds. A spectacular modern building, it also offers beautiful views of the surrounding bay, Faxaflói.

The apartment has a large living room, entrance hall, rather small kitchen and bath. TWO BEDROOMS and they are spacious with good closets.
There is one King size bed in ONE ROOM and two single beds in the other. In the bathroom is both shower and bathtub.
From the living room you can go out on the balcony.
There is a short walk to Öskjuhlíð, a great recreational area with relics from the second world war. There is Perlan with a good view over the city and other municipalities. In The Perlan you can find a very good revolving restaurant with a panoramic view. A little bit further is University of Reykjavík, Nauthóll restaurant and Nauthólsvík where you can take a bath and find Icelandic beach live.
The park in front of the house is child-friendly and there are playgrounds like football, basketball, beach, volleyball, playground and barbecue grills. During the winter time it may be possible to see the northern lights and create a snowman.
